It suits visitors who care about established provenance, fabric, craftsmanship and a garment intended to be kept rather than a low-cost costume.
Do not treat Ruifuxiang as “definitively the best Qipao tailor in Beijing.” Position it as premium rather than bargain. Do not rely on decade-old published price bands—verify current quotes in store.

Best for a smaller boutique/custom experience in a hutong shopping environment. Older official Beijing tourism material listed this location for customized Qipao, and specialty directories still identify it as a Qipao-focused boutique near the Lama Temple area.
Useful for appointment-style interaction, made-to-measure discussion and combining shopping with a Wudaoying / Guozijian afternoon. Public current information is thinner than for Ruifuxiang or Wansu—confirm before visiting. Do not hard-code hours, prices, fitting counts or turnaround without direct verification.

Qianmen & Dashilan: best area for comparison shopping

Good for air-conditioned shopping, visitors staying centrally, combining Qipao with other retail and a fixed retail environment rather than market bargaining. Wudaoying: boutique route

Ready-Made vs Custom Qipao
Ready-made Qipao
Best when you have limited time, a suitable fit already exists, commitment is lower, the garment is for occasional wear or you want to compare styles quickly. Advantages: see the final product immediately, try multiple designs, take it away and keep the purchase simple.
Weakness: Qipao fit is unusually sensitive. A dress can be the correct “size” and still fit poorly at the neck, shoulders, bust, waist, hips or armholes.
Ready-made + alterations
Often the best visitor compromise. Ready-made can sometimes be adjusted for waist, length, sleeve, side seam, slit or minor fit issues. Feasibility depends on seam allowance, fabric, lining, piping, embroidery and construction. Never promise same-day alterations—ask the shop first.
Made-to-measure
Measurements are taken and an existing style/pattern is adapted to the wearer. This can be more realistic than full bespoke for many visitors. Do not misuse “bespoke” as a synonym for every custom dress.
Bespoke / fully custom

How to Judge Qipao Quality
Start with fit
Check that the collar does not choke or gap; shoulders sit correctly; bust does not pull; the diagonal placket lies flat; waist shaping is clean; hip area allows movement; side seams remain reasonably straight; you can sit and raise arms comfortably; and the slit does not pull awkwardly. A Qipao should not simply be as tight as possible.
Inspect the fabric

Inspect piping and edges
Look for smooth curves, even width, clean corners, no puckering and secure stitching. Piping is visually prominent—poor execution is easy to see.
Check pankou
Look for secure attachment, symmetry where design requires it, clean construction, no loose threads and functional closure where applicable. Do not assume handmade pankou from appearance alone—ask.
Pattern alignment
For patterned textiles, inspect center front, major seams, collar/placket and side seams. Perfect matching is not always technically possible, but high-end work should show deliberate fabric placement.
Look inside
Check lining, seam finish, zipper insertion, loose threads, raw edges and stitching consistency. The inside often tells more about construction quality than decoration.
Check movement, not only mirror fit
Sit, walk, step up, raise arms and turn your torso. A beautiful stationary fit is irrelevant if the dress cannot function at the event.

Pricing changes with ready-made vs custom, fabric, silk type, construction, lining, embroidery, handwork, brand, fittings and wedding/formal complexity. A mass-produced dress and a handmade silk bespoke garment are not comparable products.

Budget / casual ready-made — souvenir purchase, photography, occasional wear, lower commitment.
