Chengdu itineraries at a glance
Because Chengdu splits into a compact city core plus separately located regional excursions — Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan-Qingcheng, Leshan, and Mount Emei as the longer option — the biggest itinerary decision is which excursions you have time for, not what to see inside the city itself.
- 1 day: Morning: Chengdu Panda Base. Afternoon: city culture / food / teahouse / central sights. Evening: Sichuan Opera or food-focused evening
- 2 days: Day 1 city core; Day 2 choose ONE regional excursion (Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan-Qingcheng, Leshan, or Mount Emei only if you accept a longer transport-heavy day)
- 3 days: Day 1 city + Panda Base; Day 2 one regional excursion; Day 3 a second regional excursion OR a slower Chengdu day — three days does not automatically cover the whole cluster
- 4+ days: Combine two or three regional excursions, slow the pace in Chengdu, or allocate an overnight to Mount Emei
- Base city: Central Chengdu, close to the Panda Base and food/opera venues; regional excursions each require dedicated travel time

1, 2 and 3-day plans compared
Sequence matters: putting a regional excursion on a day with no early flight to worry about avoids rushing, while the city-core day (Panda Base, food, opera) is more forgiving of a later start. There is no universally best day trip — choose by interest.

With less than a full day, most travelers keep to the Panda Base and a single food stop rather than attempting a regional excursion.
Common itinerary mistakes
Trying to combine the Panda Base with a full regional day trip
Both Dujiangyan-Qingcheng and Leshan need dedicated travel time on their own. Give the Panda Base its own city-core morning instead.
Booking Leshan as a half-day trip
The round trip plus time at the site works better as a full day than a rushed half day.
Ignoring which airport you're flying into
Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are separate airports — see the airports guide -> Airports Transport before planning arrival-day timing.
Assuming pandas will be highly active regardless of when you visit
Morning entry is commonly recommended for the Panda Base, so plan that stop early in your itinerary rather than late in the day.

- It depends on interest: Sanxingdui for archaeology, Dujiangyan-Qingcheng for ancient engineering and Taoist landscape, Leshan for the Giant Buddha, and Mount Emei for a longer Buddhist mountain experience.
- It's not recommended — Leshan is a full-day round trip on its own, so most itineraries give the Panda Base its own separate morning.
