Chengdu Itinerary: 1, 2 & 3 Days

Chengdu's city core and its two regional day trips are geographically apart, so the itinerary decision is how many you have time for. Here are realistic 1, 2 and 3-day plans.

  • 1-day plan
  • 2-day plan
  • 3-day plan
  • Regional day trips need their own day

Chengdu itineraries at a glance

Because Chengdu splits into a compact city core plus two separately located day trips — the panda facilities and the regional UNESCO sites — the biggest itinerary decision is how many of those day trips you have time for, not what to see inside the city itself.

  • 1 day: City core only — Panda Base, food, and an opera evening
  • 2 days: City core plus one regional day trip (Dujiangyan-Qingcheng or Leshan)
  • 3 days: City core plus both regional day trips
  • Base city: Central Chengdu, close to the Panda Base and food/opera venues; the regional day trips each require dedicated travel time

Which day plan fits your trip

One day: the Panda Base plus food and an opera evening. Two days: add either Dujiangyan-Qingcheng or Leshan. Three days: add both regional trips, with a buffer for the extra driving involved in reaching each one.

1, 2 and 3-day plans compared

Sequence matters: putting a regional day trip on a day with no early flight to worry about avoids rushing, while the city-core day (Panda Base, food, opera) is more forgiving of a later start.

PlanWhat you'll seeWhat you'll skip
1 dayPanda Base in the morning, Sichuan food and a face-changing show in the eveningBoth regional day trips (Dujiangyan-Qingcheng and Leshan)
2 daysThe 1-day plan plus one regional day tripThe second regional day trip
3 daysThe 1-day plan plus both regional day tripsLittle — this covers close to the full Chengdu cluster for most travelers

If you're only passing through

With less than a full day, most travelers keep to the Panda Base and a single food stop rather than attempting either regional day trip.

Common itinerary mistakes

Trying to combine the Panda Base with a full regional day trip

Both Dujiangyan-Qingcheng and Leshan need dedicated travel time on their own. Give the Panda Base its own city-core morning instead.

Booking Leshan as a half-day trip

The round trip plus time at the site works better as a full day than a rushed half day.

Ignoring which airport you're flying into

Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are separate airports — see the airports guide -> Airports Transport before planning arrival-day timing.

Assuming pandas will be highly active regardless of when you visit

Morning entry is commonly recommended for the Panda Base, so plan that stop early in your itinerary rather than late in the day.
