Because Chengdu splits into a compact city core plus two separately located day trips — the panda facilities and the regional UNESCO sites — the biggest itinerary decision is how many of those day trips you have time for, not what to see inside the city itself.

Common itinerary mistakes
Trying to combine the Panda Base with a full regional day trip
Both Dujiangyan-Qingcheng and Leshan need dedicated travel time on their own. Give the Panda Base its own city-core morning instead.
Booking Leshan as a half-day trip
The round trip plus time at the site works better as a full day than a rushed half day.
Ignoring which airport you're flying into
Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are separate airports — see the airports guide -> Airports Transport before planning arrival-day timing.
Assuming pandas will be highly active regardless of when you visit
Morning entry is commonly recommended for the Panda Base, so plan that stop early in your itinerary rather than late in the day.

- One day covers the city core (Panda Base, food, opera). Two to three days lets you add one or both regional day trips without rushing.
- It's not recommended — Leshan is a full-day round trip on its own, so most itineraries give the Panda Base its own separate morning.
- There's no fixed rule. Some travelers prefer Leshan first since it's the longer day, leaving Dujiangyan-Qingcheng for a shorter second day trip.
- Three days comfortably covers the Panda Base, food and opera in the city plus both regional day trips for most travelers.
