City Core vs Regional Day Trips

Most Chengdu trip planning splits into city-core stops, major regional excursions, and a longer Mount Emei extension — each with its own travel time:

• City core: Chengdu Panda Base, food and teahouse culture, Sichuan Opera, and central Chengdu sightseeing.
• Sanxingdui Museum: a major archaeology and museum excursion north of Chengdu, known for ancient Shu bronze masks, monumental figures and bronze trees. It is separate from the city-center museum circuit and works best as dedicated half-day-to-day planning.
• Dujiangyan & Mount Qingcheng: a regional day trip pairing a 3rd-century-BC irrigation system with a Taoist mountain.
• Leshan Giant Buddha: a full-day trip to a Tang-dynasty cliff carving, separate from Mount Emei.
• Mount Emei: a more time-intensive Buddhist mountain excursion than Leshan or Sanxingdui; a long day is possible, but travelers wanting temples, summit scenery and a less rushed visit should consider an overnight.

Choose by Number of Days

• 1 day: Panda Base in the morning, city food/culture in the afternoon, with Sichuan Opera as an evening option.
• 2 days: keep one Chengdu city day and add one regional excursion — Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan-Qingcheng or Leshan.
• 3 days: add a second regional excursion, or keep more time in Chengdu for food, teahouses and museums.
• 4+ days: add another regional excursion or use the extra time for Mount Emei, especially if you prefer an overnight rather than a rushed day trip.

What About Food?

Chengdu food runs wider than pure heat — mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, kung pao chicken and hot pot each bring a different flavor profile, and not every dish is extremely spicy. See the Chengdu food guide for what to order and where hot pot fits in.

Main Planning Constraints

• The Chengdu Panda Base is on the Chengdu city side; Panda Valley is near Dujiangyan and requires a separate regional transfer — each has its own tickets.
• Panda activity is never guaranteed on any given visit; morning entry near feeding is a tendency, not a promise.
• Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) are two separate airports — check the code on your ticket.
• Leshan and Mount Emei share one UNESCO listing but are separate trips — for a normal Chengdu-origin itinerary, plan them separately rather than compressing both into one day.
• Sanxingdui is outside central Chengdu in the Guanghan direction; treat it as a dedicated museum excursion rather than a quick city-center stop.
