Chengdu Airports & Transport Guide

Chengdu has two separate international airports. Here's how CTU and TFU compare and how to plan transport around whichever one your flight actually uses.

  • CTU ≠ TFU
  • Check your ticket's code
  • Two separate airports
  • Private pickup available

Chengdu airports & transport at a glance

Chengdu has two separate international airports — Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU). They are not interchangeable and sit a significant distance apart, so the first step in any Chengdu transport plan is checking the 3-letter airport code on your own ticket.

  • Shuangliu (CTU): The older, closer airport, roughly 16 km southwest of the city center
  • Tianfu (TFU): The newer airport, in Jianyang, noticeably farther from the city center than CTU
  • Which one you'll use: Depends entirely on your specific flight and airline — check your ticket's airport code rather than assuming
  • Between the two airports: A real transfer, not a quick hop — allow significant time if you're changing between CTU and TFU on the same trip
  • In-city transport: Metro lines connect both airports to the city; taxis and ride-hailing are also widely available

How to plan airport transfers

Confirm your airport code (CTU or TFU) on your ticket before booking a hotel or private transfer, since the two airports are far enough apart that guessing wrong adds real time to your day. If your arrival and departure flights use different Chengdu airports, build in extra buffer for the cross-city transfer.

Shuangliu (CTU) vs Tianfu (TFU)

Airline-to-airport assignments in Chengdu have shifted over time and can change again, so this guide does not list a fixed airline-by-airline table. Always confirm the airport code printed on your own ticket rather than relying on a general rule.

Common Chengdu airport mistakes

Assuming both airports are close together

CTU and TFU are a real distance apart — not a short taxi ride. Confirm which one your flight actually uses before planning your arrival day.

Booking a hotel or pickup without checking the ticket's airport code

"Chengdu" flights can land at either airport. Check the 3-letter code (CTU or TFU) on your itinerary, not just the city name.

Underestimating a same-day transfer between the two airports

If your arrival and departure flights use different airports, build in a longer buffer than you would for a single-airport city.
