Chengdu Panda Base Guide: Tickets & Visit Tips

The Chengdu Panda Base sits close to the city and is a different facility from Dujiangyan Panda Valley. Here's how to plan a realistic visit.

  • ~10 km from the city
  • Not Dujiangyan Panda Valley
  • Reservation often required
  • No guaranteed activity

Chengdu Panda Base at a glance

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地), usually shortened to "the Panda Base," is a research and breeding facility in Chenghua District, about 10 km from the city center (Tianfu Square). It is the most-visited panda site in Chengdu and a different, separate facility from Dujiangyan Panda Valley, an affiliated field-research site about 40 km away near Mount Qingcheng.

  • Chinese name: 成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 (Chéngdū Dàxióngmāo Fányù Yánjiū Jīdì)
  • Location: Chenghua District, about 10 km from Tianfu Square
  • Not the same as: Dujiangyan Panda Valley (熊猫谷), an affiliated site near Mount Qingcheng — see the day-trip guide
  • What's inside: Open-air enclosures for giant pandas and red pandas, a panda nursery area, and research/education exhibits
  • Reservation: Tickets typically require an advance real-name online reservation — confirm the current booking channel and passport requirements before you go
  • Panda activity: Not guaranteed on any visit; many visitors time entry for the morning, when pandas are sometimes more active around feeding

How to plan a Panda Base visit

Book your reservation through the base's official channel ahead of your visit date and bring the same passport used for booking. Most visitors arrive at or before the morning entry window and allow roughly half a day, since the enclosures are spread across a walkable but sizeable site.

How the Panda Base is laid out

  • Adult giant panda enclosures — open-air yards where most visitors spend the bulk of their time
  • Panda nursery / cub-viewing area — a popular stop when young cubs are present, subject to change without notice
  • Red panda area — a smaller, separate species (not a baby giant panda) often overlooked by first-time visitors
  • Museum and education exhibits — background on breeding, conservation and the base's research work

Common Panda Base mistakes

Booking with the wrong ID or arriving without your booking passport

Real-name reservation systems typically require the exact passport (or equivalent ID) used at booking. Bring the original document, not a photo or photocopy.

Arriving in the afternoon and expecting the same activity level as morning

Pandas often rest more as the day goes on. Morning entry is commonly recommended, though activity is still never guaranteed.

Confusing this base with Dujiangyan Panda Valley when booking transport

Give your driver or map app the base's exact address in Chenghua District — Dujiangyan Panda Valley is a different, further-out location.
