Quick Answer
For most first-time visitors, 3 days is the easiest balance: one day in Guilin, one day using the Li River cruise as the journey to Yangshuo, and one day for the Yangshuo countryside.
If you only have 2 days, skip most Guilin city sightseeing and prioritize the Li River and Yangshuo.
With 4 days, you can add Longji Rice Terraces without making the trip feel rushed.
With 5 days, you have room to slow down, stay longer in Yangshuo, or spend a night around Longji or Xingping.
- 2 days — Li River + Yangshuo
- 3 days — Guilin + Li River + Yangshuo
- 4 days — Add Longji Rice Terraces
- 5 days — Slow the trip down
Plan the Route Before the Attractions
Guilin, the Li River, Yangshuo and Longji are not four attractions sitting next to each other.
The easiest itinerary usually works in one direction:
Guilin → Li River → Yangshuo
Longji Rice Terraces sits north of Guilin, so it normally works better before you move south to Yangshuo.
The full Li River cruise also works especially well as a travel day. It starts on the Guilin side and finishes in Yangshuo, so you can check out of your Guilin hotel in the morning and continue the trip from Yangshuo afterward.
Do not think of the Li River cruise as something you need to do from Guilin and then return to Guilin afterward. For many travelers, it is the most scenic way to move from Guilin to Yangshuo.

2 Days: Li River + Yangshuo
*Best when time is limited*
Two days is enough for the core experience, but not for everything. If this is your first visit, we would usually prioritize the Li River and Yangshuo rather than trying to squeeze Guilin city, Longji and Yangshuo into the same trip.
Day 1 — Guilin → Li River → Yangshuo
Check out of your Guilin hotel in the morning and travel to the assigned Li River cruise pier.
Take the cruise downstream through the karst landscape to Yangshuo.
After arriving in Yangshuo, continue to your hotel, settle in and spend the late afternoon or evening at an easy pace.
Possible evening:
- Walk around central Yangshuo
- Dinner near West Street
- Riverside walk
- Optional evening performance if it interests you
The exact cruise pier, departure time and arrival point depend on the ticket and operating schedule, so build the day around the confirmed cruise rather than a fixed online itinerary.
Day 2 — Yangshuo Countryside
Use the second day for the landscape around Yangshuo rather than adding another long transfer.
A relaxed day can include the Yulong River area, village roads, rice fields and karst scenery by bicycle, e-bike, local transport or private vehicle.
You do not need to visit every named viewpoint. The value of this day is having time in the countryside rather than moving from ticket gate to ticket gate.
End the trip from Yangshuo or continue to your next destination.
If your departure train is from Yangshuo Railway Station, remember that the station is near Xingping rather than central Yangshuo. Leave enough time for the road transfer.

3 Days: The Classic First Trip
*Recommended for most first-time visitors*
Three days gives the trip a much better rhythm. You can see a little of Guilin, use the Li River cruise to move to Yangshuo, and still have a full day for the countryside.
Day 1 — Arrive in Guilin + City Sights
Use your arrival day for Guilin itself.
Depending on when you arrive, choose one or two places rather than trying to cover the whole city.
Good options include:
- Elephant Trunk Hill
- Reed Flute Cave
- A walk around the central lakes and rivers
If you arrive late in the day, simply check in, have dinner and start properly the next morning.
Do not force sightseeing into an arrival day just because an online itinerary says “Day 1.”
Day 2 — Guilin → Li River Cruise → Yangshuo
Check out of your Guilin hotel and take the Li River cruise toward Yangshuo.
This is both a sightseeing day and a transfer day.
Keep your luggage with the arrangements made for the cruise and onward transfer, then continue to your Yangshuo hotel after arrival.
Spend the evening in Yangshuo at your own pace.
Day 3 — Yangshuo Countryside
Keep the final day focused on Yangshuo.
The Yulong River countryside is the easiest choice for a first visit, with karst peaks, farmland, villages and slower local roads.
Depending on your interests and departure time, you can explore by bicycle, e-bike, bamboo raft where available, or private vehicle.
Do not automatically add Xingping as well. It can be added when the route and departure point make sense, but it is not necessary to enjoy Yangshuo.
For many travelers, this is the simplest first-time Guilin and Yangshuo itinerary.
4 Days: Add Longji Rice Terraces
With four days, Longji becomes much easier to include without sacrificing the Li River or Yangshuo countryside.
Because Longji is north of Guilin, visit it before moving south to Yangshuo.
Day 1 — Guilin
Arrive in Guilin and use the remaining time for one or two city sights.
Keep this day flexible around your flight or train rather than building a rigid schedule.
Day 2 — Longji Rice Terraces
Travel from Guilin to the Longji Rice Terraces for the day.
Choose one village area rather than trying to cover every terrace viewpoint.
The experience changes significantly with the season, weather and agricultural cycle, so come for the mountain landscape and village setting rather than expecting one particular photograph.
Return to Guilin in the evening, or stay overnight near the terraces if you prefer a slower trip.
Day 3 — Guilin → Li River → Yangshuo
Check out of Guilin and use the Li River cruise as your journey south to Yangshuo.
Continue to your Yangshuo hotel after the cruise and keep the evening free.
Day 4 — Yangshuo Countryside
Spend the final day around the Yulong River and Yangshuo countryside.
If your onward train leaves from Yangshuo Railway Station near Xingping, the final day can also be adjusted so the route finishes closer to the station.
5 Days: Slow Down Instead of Adding More
A fifth day does not need to mean another checklist of attractions. The biggest advantage is flexibility. Keep the first four days similar to the itinerary above, then use the extra time in one of three ways.
OPTION 1 — More Time in Yangshuo
Stay another night in Yangshuo and give yourself a slower countryside day, café time, walking, cycling or an extra local experience.
OPTION 2 — Stay Overnight at Longji
Instead of visiting Longji as a day trip, stay in the terrace area overnight. This reduces the amount of driving in one day and gives you quieter morning or evening time in the mountains.
OPTION 3 — Add Xingping
Spend more time around Xingping and the Li River landscape, especially if your onward journey uses Yangshuo Railway Station nearby.
Do not add all three simply because you have an extra day. Choose the one that best matches your interests and departure route.
How Many Days Should You Choose?
| Time | What Fits Well | What to Skip |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | Li River cruise + Yangshuo countryside | Most Guilin city sightseeing and Longji |
| 3 days | Guilin + Li River + Yangshuo | Longji unless you are willing to rush |
| 4 days | Guilin + Longji + Li River + Yangshuo | Very little; keep each day focused |
| 5 days | The full route at a slower pace | No need to add attractions just to fill time |
Our practical recommendation: For a first trip, choose 3 days if Longji is not a priority, or 4 days if it is.
Your Flight or Train Can Change the Itinerary
The same “3-day itinerary” can work very differently depending on when you arrive and where you leave from.
Use these rules:
- Arriving in Guilin in the morning: you may have useful sightseeing time that day.
- Arriving late afternoon or evening: treat it as an arrival day, not a full sightseeing day.
- Taking the Li River cruise: sleep in Guilin the night before the cruise.
- Leaving from Yangshuo: you do not need to return to Guilin unless your transport requires it.
- Leaving from Yangshuo Railway Station: remember the station is near Xingping, not Yangshuo town.
- Flying from Guilin after staying in Yangshuo: allow a proper road-transfer buffer rather than treating the airport as if it were next door.
This is why arrival time, departure time and hotel locations matter more than copying a generic itinerary from the internet.
Where Should You Spend the Nights?
Guilin is the more practical base for arrival, departure, city sightseeing and the start of the full Li River cruise.
Yangshuo is the better base for countryside time and a slower stay among the karst landscape.
For a typical first trip, do not keep one hotel for the entire stay just to avoid changing hotels. Moving from Guilin to Yangshuo once often creates a much cleaner itinerary than repeatedly travelling back and forth.

Do You Need a Private Driver or Guide?
Not for every day.
Central Guilin and central Yangshuo are relatively easy to explore independently, and the Li River cruise itself is a separately operated sightseeing service.
Private transport becomes more useful when the trip includes:
- Longji Rice Terraces
- Airport or railway transfers with luggage
- Hotel changes between Guilin and Yangshuo
- Several countryside stops in one day
- Families with children
- Older travelers
- A fixed flight or train departure
- A group that wants to stay together
An English-speaking guide is optional. It adds the most value when you want cultural explanation, historical context or someone accompanying you through the sightseeing day.
For many trips, a mixed approach works best: independent sightseeing where it is easy, with private transport or a guide only on the days where they solve a real problem.

Guilin & Yangshuo Itinerary FAQs
- Three days is a good starting point for a first visit: Guilin, the Li River cruise and one full Yangshuo countryside day. Add a fourth day if you also want to visit Longji Rice Terraces.
- Yes, if you keep the trip focused. A practical two-day trip is the Li River cruise from the Guilin side to Yangshuo, followed by a full day in the Yangshuo countryside. Trying to add Guilin city and Longji as well makes the trip much more rushed.
- For most multi-day trips, staying in both works better. Guilin is convenient for arrival, city sightseeing and the start of the full Li River cruise. Yangshuo is better for countryside time and a slower stay.
- They are in different directions from Guilin, so this is not a sensible first-time itinerary. Give Longji its own day and take the Li River cruise on a separate day when moving south to Yangshuo.
- Not necessarily. The classic cruise travels from the Guilin side toward Yangshuo, so many travelers simply continue their trip from Yangshuo instead of returning to Guilin.
- No. Many parts of the trip can be explored independently. A guide is useful when you want deeper cultural interpretation, while a private vehicle is often more useful for transfers, Longji and countryside logistics.
- Yes. You can keep the easy parts independent and use DragonTrail only for airport or railway transfers, Longji, countryside transport, cruise coordination or selected guided days.
