You specifically want Guilin city sights
Choose Guilin when Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed Flute Cave or the central lakes and Sun and Moon Pagodas are part of what you want from the stop — not as a checklist of mini-guides, but as the reason a city night earns its place.
You only have a short stop
A short arrival or departure stop can make hotel switching inefficient. In that case one Guilin base can be cleaner than forcing a Yangshuo night you will barely use.

Yangshuo Railway Station is not in Yangshuo town
Do not choose a hotel assuming Yangshuo Railway Station is beside central Yangshuo. The station is on the Xingping side of Yangshuo County, so a train arrival can still require a substantial onward road transfer.

Booking every night in Guilin because the flight says “Guilin”
The airport or city name does not mean every sightseeing day should start there. Scenery-focused days usually belong closer to Yangshuo.
Treating Yangshuo as only a quick photo stop
If scenery is the trip priority, repeatedly commuting from Guilin can consume the time the traveler came to enjoy.
Assuming Yangshuo Station is in central Yangshuo
The station is on the Xingping side of Yangshuo County and still needs an onward road transfer to town or countryside hotels.
Changing hotels too often
For a very short trip, splitting one night here and one night there can create more luggage handling than value.
Choosing a base without considering the next day's direction
The cleanest base depends on whether the next movement is a Li River cruise, Longji, the airport, a Guilin railway station, Yangshuo/Xingping railway station, or onward travel toward Shenzhen or Guangzhou.
