Quick answer: How should you plan Guilin and Yangshuo?
For most first-time visitors, treat Guilin and Yangshuo as one destination rather than choosing only one. Arrive in Guilin, spend part of a day or one night there if your schedule allows, travel down the Li River to Yangshuo, and spend more time exploring the countryside around Yangshuo.
Three days works for Guilin + Li River + one Yangshuo countryside day. Four or five days gives you room to add the Longji Rice Terraces or explore Yangshuo more slowly.
You do not need a private guide for everything. Central Guilin and Yangshuo are easy to explore independently; private transport becomes more useful when connecting airports, hotels, cruise piers, Longji, countryside stops or a fixed onward train.

Guilin, Yangshuo and Longji: understand the geography first

"Guilin" is often used loosely for the whole scenic region, which can make trip planning confusing.
Guilin city is where many visitors arrive by air or rail. It also has attractions such as Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave.
Yangshuo lies south of Guilin and is the better base for rural scenery, the Yulong River, cycling and exploring the karst countryside.
Xingping lies between the two along the Li River corridor and is associated with some of the region's most recognizable river scenery.
Longji Rice Terraces are north of Guilin, not near Yangshuo. This matters when building an itinerary: adding Longji creates a north–south route rather than another simple stop around Yangshuo.

If you have two or more nights, the better question usually isn't "Guilin or Yangshuo?" but how to divide the nights between them without backtracking.
How many days do you need in Guilin and Yangshuo?
2 days
Possible, but compressed. Focus on the Li River and Yangshuo rather than trying to cover Guilin city, Yangshuo countryside and Longji.
3 days
A strong first-trip length: an arrival/Guilin period, the Li River journey to Yangshuo and one proper countryside day.
4 days
Gives the trip room to breathe. Add another Yangshuo day or Longji depending on your interests and arrival/departure times.
5+ days
Suitable if you want Longji plus Guilin and Yangshuo without turning every day into a transfer day.
Your arrival and departure times matter almost as much as your number of nights. A traveler landing at noon effectively has a very different three-day trip from someone arriving at 9 PM.
The simplest first-time route

For many first visits, this route minimizes unnecessary backtracking because the Li River cruise itself becomes the journey from the Guilin side toward Yangshuo.
You do not necessarily need to return to Guilin after the cruise. Depending on your onward travel, you may continue from Yangshuo, return to Guilin later, or travel directly toward another city.
Li River cruise: sightseeing and transport in one day
- It generally travels from the Guilin side toward Yangshuo.
- It is not simply a boat leaving from central Guilin.
- Travelers need transport from hotel → assigned pier.
- On arrival, they still need to get from the cruise endpoint → hotel/onward destination.
That means a "Li River cruise day" actually consists of three separate logistics pieces:
hotel → cruise pier → boat journey → Yangshuo hotel/onward travel
What to do around Yangshuo
Yulong River & countryside
Bamboo rafting, cycling, walking and rural scenery.
Xingping & the Li River corridor
River scenery, old-town atmosphere and access to a different part of the karst landscape.
Yangshuo town
Restaurants, hotels and West Street; useful as a base but not the whole reason to visit Yangshuo.
Viewpoints / countryside roads
Better suited to travelers who want photography, sunrise/sunset or a slower scenic day.
You do not necessarily need a driver for a full Yangshuo day. If you are comfortable with taxis, walking, cycling or e-bikes, many local activities can be explored independently. A vehicle becomes more useful when combining several distant stops, traveling with children or luggage, or keeping to a fixed onward schedule.
Is Guilin city worth visiting?
Yes, if it fits naturally into your arrival or departure day. Guilin city has its own riverfront scenery, karst formations and caves, and it can be a pleasant introduction to the region.
For travelers with limited time, however, we would normally avoid sacrificing a full Yangshuo countryside day simply to add more city attractions.

Should you add the Longji Rice Terraces?
Longji is worthwhile, but it changes the shape of the trip. The terraces are north of Guilin while Yangshuo is south, so Longji is not an easy "extra stop" between Guilin and Yangshuo.

Consider adding Longji if:
- you have 4+ days;
- rice terraces are a major interest;
- you enjoy walking and rural landscapes;
- you are comfortable giving a full day to it.
Consider skipping it if:

- you prefer more time cycling/rafting/resting around Yangshuo.
Getting to Guilin and Yangshuo
Flying into Guilin
Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is the region's primary airport.
User can:
- stay in Guilin;
- travel directly toward Yangshuo;
- build an arrival-day Guilin stop before continuing later.
Arriving by train
Yangshuo Railway Station is not in central Yangshuo town. It is closer to the Xingping area, so "taking the train to Yangshuo" still leaves a road journey to many Yangshuo hotels.

- you want to walk around Guilin;
- your Yangshuo plan is mainly cycling, rafting and relaxing;
- you are comfortable booking taxis or DiDi;
- your schedule is flexible.
Private transport becomes more useful for:
- airport or railway pickup with luggage;
- Guilin hotel → Li River cruise pier;
- Yangshuo cruise arrival → countryside hotel;
- Longji Rice Terraces;
- multiple countryside stops;
- families with children or seniors;
- larger groups;
- a fixed train or flight after sightseeing.
What about a guide?
An English-speaking guide can add context at cultural or historical sites, but a guide is not necessary simply to move between Guilin and Yangshuo. Many travelers use a private vehicle only on the days when logistics are difficult and explore independently the rest of the trip.
