Three boat options

Three ways to get on Kunming Lake. (1) Dragon-boat (long covered passenger boat): 15 RMB one-way East Gate dock to 17-Arch Bridge / South Lake Island, 25 RMB return; runs every 15-20 min. The default tour-visit option. (2) Self-paddle row boats or pedal boats: 40-60 RMB per hour, 200 RMB deposit; you steer. Best for couples wanting time on the water. (3) Smaller paddle / kayak rentals at the back-lake. The boat saves 30-45 min walking around Kunming Lake and gives the lake-level view of Longevity Hill - the iconic Summer Palace photo. Why take the boat

Three reasons. (1) Saves 30-45 min walking around Kunming Lake's 7-8 km circumference. (2) Lake-level view of Longevity Hill with Tower of Buddhist Incense as the backdrop - the iconic Summer Palace photograph. (3) A signature Beijing experience that adds variety to the walk-only tour. The 15 RMB dragon-boat one-way is the cheapest cultural upgrade on the entire Summer Palace day.

  • Saves 30-45 min walking.
  • Iconic lake-level Longevity Hill photo.
  • Variety in the day.
  • 15 RMB - cheapest cultural upgrade.

Dragon-boat: where and when

Dragon-boats run between the East Gate dock (near Long Corridor's east end) and the South Lake Island dock (near 17-Arch Bridge). Every 15-20 min in peak season; less frequent off-season. First boats 8:30 AM, last boats 5 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season. 15 RMB one-way, 25 RMB return. Buy tickets at the dock - cash or mobile pay; English signage limited but staff direct visitors.

  • Route: East Gate ↔ South Lake Island.
  • Frequency: every 15-20 min peak.
  • Hours: 8:30 AM - 5 PM peak.
  • Pay at dock: cash / mobile.
  • 15 RMB one-way / 25 RMB return.

Self-paddle row boats

For couples or families wanting more time on the water. Rent at the East Gate dock area: 40-60 RMB per hour plus a 200 RMB deposit. You steer; lifejackets provided. Stay in the marked area near the East Causeway - far open water is off-limits. Time on water typically 30-60 min before energy fades; good for golden hour 4-5 PM with sunset light on Longevity Hill.

  • 40-60 RMB/hr + 200 RMB deposit.
  • Lifejackets provided.
  • Stay in marked area.
  • Best for couples / families.
  • Golden hour 4-5 PM is ideal.

When to skip the boat

Four cases. (1) Winter (November-March): boats closed. (2) Very windy day - rough water, possible seasickness for kids. (3) Heavy rain or thunderstorm forecast. (4) You have under 90 min total on site - boat takes 45-60 min round trip. In those cases, walk Long Corridor and take the photo from the East Causeway midpoint - similar angle, no boat needed.

  • Winter: closed.
  • Very windy day: rough water.
  • Heavy rain / thunderstorm.
  • Under 90 min total visit.
  • Substitute: East Causeway midpoint photo.

Common boat mistakes

Skipping the boat to save 15 RMB

Saves 30-45 min walking and is the iconic photo - almost always worth it.

Renting a self-paddle boat with under 90 min

Boarding + paddling + returning eats your time. Use dragon-boat for transit + photos.

Going at midday in summer

Boat dock queues 15-25 min, hot sun. Morning or 4-5 PM is better.

Boating in winter without checking

Boats don't run November-March. Lake sometimes freezes for skating instead.

Summer Palace boat FAQ

Plan the boat ride

Our private Summer Palace day includes the dragon-boat ride by default - we time it for late afternoon when crowds drop and the Longevity Hill lighting is best.

If you want more time on the water, the half-day deep route can include a 30-min self-paddle boat at the East Causeway.
