Three boat options
Three ways to get on Kunming Lake. (1) Dragon-boat (long covered passenger boat): ¥30–40 one way depending on route; current official ferry routes use multiple piers (not one universal East Gate↔island crossing) including services toward 17-Arch Bridge / South Lake Island, route-dependent one-way fares under the current official pier map; follows the current official pier schedule. The default tour-visit option. (2) Self-paddle row boats or pedal boats: ¥200 per boat per hour plus a ¥600 deposit for six-seat self-drive electric boats; you steer. Best for couples wanting time on the water. (3) Smaller paddle / kayak rentals at the back-lake. The a ferry can shorten some lake transfers when that route is operating walking around Kunming Lake and gives the lake-level view of Longevity Hill - the iconic Summer Palace photo. Boats normally run mid-March to mid-November, subject to annual announcement and weather.

Large-boat operations commonly run about 08:30–17:30 when operating; first boats 19:00 peak / 18:00 off-season for the main park (paid interiors earlier). ¥30–40 one way depending on route, route-dependent one-way fares under the current official pier map. Buy tickets at the dock - cash or mobile pay; English signage limited but staff direct visitors.

Self-paddle row boats
For couples or families wanting more time on the water. Rent at official self-drive piers (Yulantang, Wenchangge, Bafangting) when operating: ¥200 per boat per hour plus a ¥600 deposit for six-seat self-drive electric boats. You steer; lifejackets provided. Stay in the marked area near the East Causeway - far open water is off-limits. Time on water typically 30-60 min before energy fades; good for golden hour 4-5 PM with sunset light on Longevity Hill.

When to skip the boat

(3) Heavy rain or thunderstorm forecast. (4) You have under 90 min total on site - boat takes 45-60 min round trip. In those cases, walk Long Corridor and take the photo from the East Causeway midpoint - similar angle, no boat needed.

Saves 30-45 min walking and is the iconic photo - almost always worth it.
Renting a self-paddle boat with under 90 min
Boarding + paddling + returning eats your time. Use dragon-boat for transit + photos.
Going at midday in summer
Boat dock queues 15-25 min, hot sun. Morning or 4-5 PM is better.
Boating in winter without checking
Boats normally run mid-March to mid-November and can stop for weather. Lake sometimes freezes for skating instead.

Plan the boat ride
Our private Summer Palace day includes the dragon-boat ride by default - we time it for late afternoon when crowds drop and the Longevity Hill lighting is best.
If you want more time on the water, the half-day deep route can include a 30-min self-paddle boat at the East Causeway.
