Route 1: East→North walking (3 hours)
The classic route. Enter East Gate, walk south along Long Corridor (30-45 min, 728m of painted ceiling beams), turn north up Longevity Hill via Pai-yun Gate, climb to Hall of Dispelling Clouds and Tower of Buddhist Incense (60-90 min), descend the north side via the Suzhou Street imperial shopping mock-up (20-30 min), exit Beigongmen. Total 3 hours, ~3 km walking.
- East Gate entry, Beigongmen exit.
- Long Corridor: 30-45 min.
- Longevity Hill climb: 60-90 min.
- Suzhou Street: 20-30 min.
- Total: 3 hr, ~3 km.
Route 2: East→Boat→North (2 hours)
The fast route - works for time-tight, families with younger kids, or seniors who want to skip the long Long Corridor walk. Enter East Gate, brief walk to the boat dock, dragon-boat across Kunming Lake to South Lake Island (15 min, 17-Arch Bridge), walk north along the lake bank back up to Long Corridor mid-point, climb Longevity Hill, exit Beigongmen. Total 2 hours, ~1.5 km walking. Boat saves 30-45 min.
- Boat across lake first - signature experience.
- Skips full Long Corridor walk.
- Best for families + seniors.
- Total: 2 hr, 1.5 km walking + boat.
- Saves 30-45 min vs route 1.
Route 3: Half-day deep (4-5 hours)
For architecture and garden lovers. All of route 1 plus: full Marble Boat visit (north-west, photo stop), West Causeway loop on the back lake (peaceful, fewer tourists, echoes Hangzhou's West Lake), all Longevity Hill structures interior visits (Hall of Dispelling Clouds courtyard, Pai-yun Gate carved details). Half a day total. Strongly recommended for second-time visitors and photographers chasing different light hours.
- Route 1 base + Marble Boat detour.
- West Causeway back-lake loop.
- All structure interiors and courtyards.
- 4-5 hr; two light windows for photos.
Which route for whom?
Three pickers. (1) First-time visitor with 3 hr: route 1 (walking). (2) Family with under-12s or anyone with 2 hr: route 2 (boat). (3) Architecture / garden lover with half day: route 3 (deep). (4) Bonus: if you have 90 min only, do a 'lite' route 2 - just East Gate, Long Corridor, boat to 17-Arch Bridge, return to East Gate (skip Longevity Hill).
- 3 hr first-timer: route 1.
- 2 hr family / senior: route 2.
- 4-5 hr depth: route 3.
- 90 min lite: East Gate + corridor + boat round-trip.
Common route mistakes
Trying route 1 with under 2 hours
You'll rush Longevity Hill or skip it. Use route 2 (boat) for 2 hr.
Skipping Tower of Buddhist Incense
The icon of the Summer Palace. Worth the climb.
Walking the whole lake loop
Kunming Lake circumference is 7-8 km. The boat exists for a reason.
Exiting Beigongmen with a taxi waiting at East Gate
Plan the exit gate to match your transport mode.
