  • Optional private tours and quotes

The short answer on hours

Summer Palace main park grounds open 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM in peak season (April through October), with last entry at 7:00 PM. Off-season (November through March) the main park opens 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, with last entry at 6:00 PM. Separately charged internal attractions — including the Tower of Buddhist Incense, Garden of Virtue and Harmony, Palace Museum area and Suzhou Street — open 8:00 AM-6:00 PM peak (last entry 5:30 PM) and 8:30 AM-5:00 PM off-season (last entry 4:30 PM), and are typically closed Mondays except statutory holidays. The main park itself stays open every day, including Mondays, which makes the grounds a practical Forbidden City alternative. Crowds peak between 11 AM and 2 PM in summer; the quietest hours are right at opening or in late afternoon.

  • Drive time from Beijing: Northwest Beijing — about 30–45 minutes from central Beijing (subway or taxi)
  • Visit style: Gate-open to last-entry: ~13 hr peak / ~12.5 hr off (main park)
  • Difficulty: Easy — no strenuous hiking required
  • Crowds: Quietest 6:00-8 AM and after 4 PM
  • Best for: Time-budget planning; Monday-visit travellers (main park); Anyone choosing between FC and Summer Palace for a specific day
  • Less ideal for: Travellers wanting to start after last entry - too late

Best arrival time

Two windows. (1) Opening hour: lowest crowds, golden morning light on the lake, locals exercising. Most peaceful experience of the year. (2) 3-5 PM: post-tour-group lull and golden afternoon light. Worst window: 11 AM-2 PM in summer (heat + tour-group peak). Plan around last entry for paid attractions if Longevity Hill interiors matter.

  • 6:00-8 AM peak / 6:30-8 AM off: lowest crowds + morning light.
  • 3-5 PM: post-group lull + golden hour.
  • Avoid 11 AM-2 PM in summer.
  • Arrive before last entry for your target areas.

Last-entry vs closing time

Last entry to the main park grounds is 7:00 PM in peak season and 6:00 PM off-season. Separately charged internal attractions last-enter at 5:30 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season. After paid attractions close, you can often still walk the main park until park closing — so a late afternoon arrival may still work for Kunming Lake and open garden paths, but not for Longevity Hill interiors.

  • Main park last entry: 7:00 PM peak / 6:00 PM off-season.
  • Paid attractions last entry: 5:30 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season.
  • Main park stays open later than paid internal attractions.
  • A late arrival may still allow a garden walk after paid areas close.

Common opening-hours mistakes

Arriving after paid-attraction last entry

Paid internal attractions last-enter earlier than the main park (5:30 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season). You may still stroll the garden until park close, but Longevity Hill interiors will be closed.

Assuming the whole park closes on Monday

The main park grounds stay open Mondays. Separately charged internal attractions are the ones typically closed Mondays except statutory holidays.

Going at 10 AM in October

Peak crowd density on a warm autumn weekend. Use early-opening or 3-5 PM windows instead.

Assuming paid attractions match main-park closing

Tower of Buddhist Incense and related paid areas close earlier (6:00 PM peak / 5:00 PM off-season) than the main park grounds.
