Seasonal hours, last-entry times, and why this is the Monday alternative to the Forbidden City.

The short answer on hours

The Summer Palace is open 6:30 AM to 8 PM in peak season (April through October), with garden gates closing at 5 PM and Longevity Hill structures closing at 4:30 PM. Off-season (November through March) it opens 7 AM to 7 PM, with gates closing at 4:30 PM and structures at 4 PM. The site is open every day of the year, including Mondays - this is the natural alternative when the Forbidden City is closed. Crowds peak between 11 AM and 2 PM in summer; the quietest hours are right at opening or in late afternoon.

Why open every day

Unlike the Forbidden City (closed Mondays year-round), the Summer Palace operates as a public garden under Beijing's parks bureau. The structures - Tower of Buddhist Incense, Hall of Dispelling Clouds - sometimes close individually for restoration but the garden is always accessible. This makes the Summer Palace the standard Monday alternative for Beijing visitors whose itinerary lands on a closed-FC day.

  • Garden never closes (operated as a public park).
  • Individual structures may close for restoration.
  • The standard FC-on-Monday swap.
  • No 'open-day-only' holiday exceptions to manage.

Best arrival time

Two windows. (1) 6:30-8 AM (opening): no crowds, golden morning light on the lake, locals exercising and dancing. Most peaceful experience of the year. (2) 3-5 PM: post-tour-group lull, golden afternoon light on Longevity Hill, lake reflections. Worst window: 11 AM-2 PM in summer (heat + tour-group peak).

  • 6:30-8 AM: zero crowds + morning light.
  • 3-5 PM: post-group lull + golden hour.
  • Avoid 11 AM-2 PM in summer.
  • Last entry windows usually feel quiet.

Last-entry vs closing time

Last entry to the garden: 5 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season. Last entry to Longevity Hill structures: 4 PM peak / 3:30 PM off-season (30 min before structure close). After last entry to structures, you can still walk the garden grounds until 5 PM peak / 4:30 PM off-season - so a 4 PM peak-season arrival gives a 1-hour garden-only window.

  • Last entry garden: 5 PM peak.
  • Last entry structures: 4 PM peak.
  • Structure ticket closes 30 min early.
  • 4 PM arrival = 1 hr garden-only window.

Common opening-hours mistakes

Going at 5 PM in summer assuming late opening

Last entry was 5 PM but the structure ticket closed at 4 PM. You can stroll the garden until close at 5 PM but won't make Longevity Hill.

Worrying about a Monday closure

Summer Palace is open every Monday. You're confusing it with the Forbidden City.

Going at 10 AM in October

Peak crowd density on a warm autumn weekend. Use 7-8 AM or 3-5 PM windows instead.

Assuming structures are open later in summer

Tower of Buddhist Incense and Hall of Dispelling Clouds close 4:30 PM peak / 4 PM off-season - earlier than the garden gates.
