Baoding itineraries fail when they treat the prefecture as one neighborhood. The Zhili governor's office and the Ancient Lotus Pool are a walk in the old center. The Western Qing Tombs are a long day in Yi County, west in the hills, not a stroll from that office. Yesanpo and Baili Gorge are in Laishui County, and each of them is a full scenic day. Dingzhou, with a single very tall Song pagoda and a Qing examination hall, is south by rail. The shapes below are the ones that respect those directions. Pick the shape from the farthest place you refuse to cut.

The photograph is two brick pagodas above trees and a modern skyline: an octagonal tower with a spherical finial in front, a taller slimmer tower behind. It is not the yamen, not the tombs, and not Dingzhou's Liaodi Pagoda, which stands alone. Zhuozhou's Liao pair are two sites, not one courtyard, and not a stop this itinerary needs. The hub is the short version of the choice. This page is the day order.
A tombs day from Beijing
Leave after breakfast by car. The destination is Yi County, 易县, and the gate you want is 清西陵. The Western Qing Tombs day tour is this day if you want the order set for you. The first landmark is the stone memorial archway, then the spirit way. Walk the statues. Do not treat them as the driveway. Yongzheng's Tailing is the mound to give a real visit. Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu are in the same valley, far enough apart that you ride between them. Add one of those three only if the group still has legs after Tailing. Then eat, and go back to Beijing with a buffer you would be willing to lose to traffic.
Cixi is not in this valley. She is at the Eastern Qing Tombs in Zunhua, and so is Ci'an. That is a different road, northeast of Beijing, written up as the Eastern Qing Tombs and arranged as the Eastern Qing Tombs day tour. Use those pages only so you do not book the wrong compass point. You cannot see both cemeteries on this date.
What this day does not include: the yamen, the lotus pool, Yesanpo, Baili Gorge, Dingzhou, Mancheng, Zhengding. Saying them aloud is how the archway survives. The tombs page is the walking version. Follow it until you could describe the approach without looking at your phone.
A rail day for the office and the pool
Leave Beijing West on an early fast train for Baoding East (保定东). Many of those trains take well under an hour. Confirm the timetable, and confirm the characters on the ticket. Slower trains, and any arrival that is only 保定站, are a different ride. The high-speed station is not the yamen door. Taxi to 直隶总督署.
The visit is the courtyards, not the gate photograph. Walk the axis before the side rooms. Then walk to the Ancient Lotus Pool (古莲花池). In summer, if the flowers are the reason, protect the hour of light you want and do the garden before a long lunch. In other months the water and the halls are still the second half of the day. Between them, eat donkey-meat shaobing if you want the local snack. Ask the price of the piece you are ordering before it is filled. No shop name is required. Wheat noodles are the meal if someone will not eat donkey. The Zhili governor page is that walk in full.
Taxi back to Baoding East with time for the queue. Buy the return for late afternoon or evening, not for a train you can only catch by leaving the garden at a jog. If that return does not exist on your date, this is not a day trip. Stay the night. The from Beijing page is how to read the ticket.
What this day does not include, and should not grow to include: Yi County, either Laishui scenic day, Dingzhou, a Han tomb promised for its jade. Do not put Yesanpo or Baili Gorge beside the yamen the same morning. They are not next door, and each of them wants its own daylight.
One night, and still one outing
Sleep once. You buy a calmer morning, or a shorter start toward the tombs. You do not buy both the civic walk and the cemetery.
Arrive from Beijing in the late afternoon or evening if the next morning is the office at opening. Sleep near the old center. Day two is the yamen and the lotus pool only, then a train. Do not start a car toward Yi County after lunch and call it a bonus. Do not start toward Laishui at all.
Or use the night the other way: do the tombs from Beijing on day one only if you are truly finished in time to sleep in Baoding, which is a long day already, and keep day two for the office and the pool before you leave. That order works when the cemetery is the priority and the city is the recovery. It fails when you try to walk the garden before the tombs car leaves. Choose one morning. The other site gets the other day.
One night is also the wrong tool for Dingzhou plus the yamen plus a gorge. Three wishes, one sleep, and a ruined clock. The hub says the same thing as a length. Here it is a refusal you can hand to the person who is still adding pins.
Two nights for the city and the cemetery
Two nights, three calendar days. This is the honest length when both the old center and Yi County matter, and when you do not also demand a gorge.
Day one, if you arrive in the morning: Baoding East, taxi, yamen, lotus pool, bread you have priced, sleep near the old center. If you arrive at lunch, still do the office and the garden, and cut side rooms before you cut the pool. Do not start for the hills.
Day two is only the tombs. Leave in the morning with a car. Archway, spirit way, Tailing, one further mound if the day is kind, then back. You may return to Beijing that evening, or sleep the second night and leave on day three. Do not schedule the lotus pool as a sunset reward. Do not schedule Baili Gorge as the thing you do "since you are already out."
Day three, if you still have it, is a train. South toward Shijiazhuang if that city is the next wish, or back to Beijing if Baoding was the add-on. It is not a morning in which you invent Dingzhou and Mancheng and the military academy. One spare morning can be Dingzhou, or it can be a slower second look at the garden. It cannot be both plus a tomb you skipped yesterday.
Sleep near the old center before a yamen morning. Sleep where the driver can find you before a tombs morning. Do not change lodging at noon.
Laishui on its own date
Yesanpo (野三坡) is the wider scenic country in Laishui County: the Juma River, the hills, the villages people use as a weekend from Beijing. Baili Gorge (百里峡) is the long gorge walk in that same county. They share a reputation. They do not share a morning. If you walk the gorge properly, you have used the day. If you spend the day on the river and the wider ground, you have not also finished the gorge. Plan them as two dates or choose one.
Neither belongs beside the yamen the same morning. A Beijing start often never enters Baoding city at all, which is fine when the landscape is the wish and a waste when you also paid for a night in order to see the office. Put the scenic day on its own date, with a car, and with an early start. Summer weekends are crowded. In winter, ask whether the paths are open before you lock the day. If the answer is no, the yamen and the tombs are the outings that do not depend on a gorge.
If both scenic days matter, they are two days by themselves. Add the city only by adding another date. Add the tombs only by adding yet another. A two-night Baoding hotel does not stretch across all four. People draw that line because the names sit inside one prefecture. The roads do not.
Dingzhou, Mancheng, and the train south
Dingzhou is a separate day south of the city, usually by rail. The Liaodi Pagoda is one very tall Song tower. The Qing examination hall is the building to pair with it. Do not stack that pair with Yi County, and do not stack it with the yamen if both are supposed to be visits rather than platform changes. Dingzhou East, when your train actually stops there, is still not the pagoda door. Taxi, see the tower and the hall, and leave. Whether you can climb the pagoda is a fact to check, not a paragraph you can trust from another season.
Mancheng's Han tombs are closer to the city than Yi County, on a hill to the southwest. A car can make them an afternoon after the yamen and the pool are finished, and only after you have checked what is exhibited. Do not promise the jade suits on site. They were found in the tombs of Liu Sheng and Dou Wan. They are not a guarantee of the cases in the hill. If the suits are the reason you care, check the displays you can actually see that week, including the provincial museum when you are in Shijiazhuang, and do not treat the hill and a gallery as one errand. Do not clip Mancheng onto the yamen morning. Do not clip it onto the tombs.
Shijiazhuang is the next city south, and it is a new itinerary. The Shijiazhuang guide is the bronze at Zhengding, not a provincial avenue. Use the Zhengding day tour when that bronze is the only wish. Use the two-day tour when the stone bridge and Cangyan Mountain need a night. Use a Shijiazhuang private driver when you are already there and the day is a county road. None of those is a way to "finish Baoding" on the way to the mountain. The mountain is southwest of Shijiazhuang. The tombs are northwest of that capital. Combining them is a new week.
One calendar you can hold
Here is a three-day order that does not cheat. Morning one: Beijing West to Baoding East on a fast train you have checked, taxi, yamen axis, lotus pool, bread with the price asked first, sleep near the old center. Morning two: car to Yi County, archway, spirit way, Tailing, and back to that lodging or onward to Beijing if you never needed the second night. If you kept the second night, morning three is the train out, not a new county squeezed in because the bag is already packed.
If the tombs matter more than the office, reverse the mornings. Morning one is the car from Beijing to the archway, and you sleep in Baoding only if you finished in daylight. Morning two is the office and the pool, unhurried. Morning three is the train. Do not walk the pool before the car on the tombs morning. The garden will still be there tomorrow. The spirit way will not wait while you do both.
If the wish is scenery, throw this calendar away and write another. Morning one is Yesanpo, the river and the hills, and nothing else. Morning two is Baili Gorge, the long walk, and nothing else. The yamen is a later morning only if you still want it, which means another night or a rail day you have already matched to a real timetable. Do not describe those mornings as a weekend from Beijing with one sleep. One sleep cannot cover a gorge, a second gorge, and a government office.
Dingzhou replaces the spare morning if the Song tower and the examination hall are the sentence you actually wrote, and the tombs or the gorge are the sentence you did not. Mancheng replaces nothing in the morning list. It is an afternoon after the pool, and only after you have checked what is exhibited. It never takes the place of Tailing, and it never shares the yamen's morning.
What to cut when the train is fixed
Cut in this order. First the second Laishui day, then any Laishui day. Then Dingzhou. Then Mancheng. Then a second imperial mound. Then side rooms at the yamen. Do not cut the thing you named at breakfast. If that thing was the office, keep the axis and the garden. If that thing was Yongzheng, keep the archway, the spirit way, and Tailing. If that thing was the gorge, keep the gorge and drop the city rather than ruining both.
Do not cut the return buffer. A late train you can miss is part of the plan. A train that requires you to be in security while you are still on a spirit way is a different plan, and it is a bad one. Holiday weeks sell out. Buy the return before you leave Beijing.
With children, keep the garden and the stone animals, and drop the gorge and the extra mounds. With someone who cannot do stairs, drop Baili Gorge before you discuss it. With someone who will not eat donkey, order noodles and keep walking. The snack is not the structure of the day.
Seasons change which hour you protect
In lotus season, protect the garden. The courtyards and the tomb approaches are hot and bright. Start early, carry water, and do not invent a third stop in July. At Yesanpo and at the gorge, summer weekends are the crowded version of a landscape you could have walked in autumn.
Outside the early October holiday, autumn is the comfortable walking weather for the office, the garden without flowers, and the cemetery. Qingming fills imperial cemeteries with people who are there to sweep graves. Book the train, and walk more quietly. The early October holiday does the same to trains and to scenic gates.
Winter is a fair season for the yamen and a hard season for a gorge you have not checked. Daylight ends early, which matters on the drive back from Yi County. The garden keeps its corridors and loses the flower argument. Chinese New Year weeks can close buildings. Check openings for the specific hall you care about. The jade suits move with exhibitions. Underground chambers at the tombs open and close. Whether Liaodi can be climbed is the same kind of fact.
The sentence that decides the length
Write one sentence: the courtyards, or Yongzheng's valley, or one gorge. That sentence picks a rail day, the tombs day tour, or extra nights. A second sentence is allowed when it names the other of the city and the cemetery, and then you are on the two-night shape. A third sentence, if it names Yesanpo or Baili Gorge or Dingzhou, adds a date. It does not fold into the afternoon.
There is no arranged Baoding city tour to book in place of the train. The civic day is a ticket and a taxi. The cemetery day is a car, or the western tombs tour. The southbound days belong to Shijiazhuang. Beijing is the base. The Hebei guide is the rest of the province, including the Tangshan side, where the other cemetery sits. Leave that side for its own morning.

Itinerary questions
- Not as one day. Laishui is the day.
- Choose Yesanpo or Baili Gorge and stay with it. Do not collect both.
- Only as a possible stop after you know what is on display. Do not come for jade suits you have not confirmed.
- For the town and the tombs, yes. Not if you also want Dingzhou and a gorge.
- Only if you move hotels south. It is not an afternoon.
- The Western Tombs day if the cemetery is the wish. Otherwise come by train for the yamen and leave.
Pick one Baoding day and leave the rest
The yamen, Yi County, and Laishui are three itineraries.
