For most travelers, the best time for a Yangtze River cruise is April to May or September to October. Temperatures are generally comfortable enough for shore excursions and time on the open deck, without the intense midsummer heat of Chongqing and Yichang.
That does not mean you should avoid the rest of the cruise season. March is cool but pleasant, June is warmer and wetter, July and August are hot and humid, while November and December suit travelers who do not mind cooler weather. The main Yangtze cruise season generally runs from March into December; January and February have much more limited availability depending on the cruise line and year.
Weather in the Three Gorges is changeable. Low cloud, mist and rain are part of the landscape, so no month can guarantee clear mountain views. Choose the month for temperature, crowds and your wider China itinerary rather than trying to predict one perfect photography day.

If we could choose freely, we would look first at April, the second half of May, September outside holiday dates, and October after Golden Week. That is a planning preference, not a weather guarantee.

The cruise covers a long stretch of river, so there is no single temperature for the entire journey. The figures below use long-term climate averages from Chongqing and Yichang, the two ends of the classic Three Gorges route, to give a practical planning range.

Spring: March to May
Spring is one of the easiest times to cruise the Yangtze. March starts cool, but by April the daytime temperature is generally comfortable for both sightseeing and sitting outside. May is warmer and wetter but still considerably easier for many travelers than July or August.
March
March marks the beginning of the main cruise season. Expect cool mornings and evenings, with daytime temperatures around the high teens Celsius. It is a good choice if you prefer cooler weather and your preferred ship is already operating.
April
April is one of our strongest overall choices. Chongqing averages around 24°C during the day and Yichang around 22°C, making shore excursions and deck viewing comfortable without midsummer heat. Rain is possible, so a light waterproof layer is still useful.
May
May remains a very good month, but temperatures and rainfall rise. It is warm rather than mild, especially toward the end of the month.
For 2026, avoid May 1–5 if your dates are flexible. This is China's Labor Day holiday period and domestic tourism becomes much busier.
Summer: June to August
Summer is not a bad time for a Yangtze cruise. It is simply a hotter and more humid version of the trip. Cruise cabins and public spaces are air-conditioned, while shore excursions and open-deck viewing require more heat tolerance.
June
June is warm and humid and is one of the wetter parts of the year around Chongqing and Yichang. Temperatures are normally around the high 20s Celsius during the day.
July and August
July and August are the hottest months. Daytime averages at the two ends of the route reach roughly 33–34°C, with warm nights around 24–25°C. Chongqing in particular is known for intense summer heat.
The advantages are long daylight hours and a lush green landscape. The trade-off is that midday shore excursions can feel tiring. Lightweight clothing, sun protection, water and time in air-conditioned indoor spaces matter more than they do in spring or autumn.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the other main comfort season, but the three months feel quite different. September can still be warm, October is notably cooler, and November begins the transition into the late cruise season.
September
September normally remains warm, with daytime averages around 28°C at both Chongqing and Yichang, but the extreme midsummer heat starts to ease. It is one of the strongest months for travelers who want warm weather without July–August temperatures.
October
October is one of the most comfortable months, with average daytime temperatures around 22°C at both ends of the cruise. For many travelers, this is ideal walking and deck weather.
The important exception is China's National Day holiday. In 2026, the official holiday runs October 1–7. If your itinerary is flexible, travel after Golden Week rather than during it.
November
November is cooler, with daytime averages around 16–17°C. It can still be a good cruise month, particularly if you prefer cool weather, but there are fewer departures than during the main autumn peak.
December and the Winter Off-Season
December is part of the late Yangtze cruise season rather than a universally active winter season. Some operators continue to offer departures into late December, but availability is much narrower than in spring, summer and autumn.
Expect daytime temperatures around 11–12°C at the two ends of the route, with colder mornings and evenings. Open-deck viewing therefore requires a proper jacket and layers.
January and February should not be treated as normal Yangtze cruising months. Some special sailings may exist, but many classic Chongqing–Yichang programs pause or operate only limited departures. Check actual inventory before building a China itinerary around a winter cruise.

Will Rain or Fog Ruin a Yangtze Cruise?
Usually not. The Three Gorges are a humid mountain-and-river environment, so cloud, mist and rain are normal possibilities rather than unusual disruptions.
A clear day reveals more distant ridgelines, while mist can make Wu Gorge and the surrounding mountains feel more atmospheric. What you should not expect is guaranteed blue-sky photography in April, October or any other month.
Rain also does not normally mean the entire cruise stops. Shore excursions and small-boat outings can be adjusted when weather or river conditions require it, while the main cruise continues according to the operator's program.

Individual operators set their own calendars. Yangzi Explorer, for example, currently describes its season as beginning in March and ending in late December. Century also publishes departures into November and December. January and February should therefore be treated as limited-availability periods rather than a normal winter cruise season.

Do Yangtze Water Levels Affect the Cruise?
