Yangtze River Cruise Ports & Boarding: Chongqing and Yichang

Chaotianmen dock complex, Yichang pier system, transfers and embarkation checklists—not one generic terminal name.

  • Chaotianmen piers
  • Maoping / Zigui
  • CKG & Yichang transfers
  • Embarkation buffers

Embarkation and disembarkation are where Yangtze cruise trips succeed or fail: the right pier, transfer buffer, and offline confirmation matter as much as ship choice. Chongqing sailings use the Chaotianmen dock complex at the Jialing–Yangtze confluence; Yichang sailings use multiple terminals (Maoping, Zigui, and Sandouping-area piers depending on operator and water level). DragonTrail coordinates transfers and timing with local cruise partners; we do not assign piers or operate vessels.

Short Answer

Arrive the city the day before embarkation when possible. Save your sailing confirmation with exact pier name, check-in window, and baggage rules. Plan 90+ minutes from Chongqing Jiangbei Airport (CKG) or Yichang Three Gorges Airport (YIH) to the stated pier in normal traffic—more in peak hours. After disembarkation, do not book same-day international flights without verifying the sailing’s published end time plus dam-day delays.

Chongqing: Chaotianmen Dock Complex

Chaotianmen is Chongqing’s historic river gateway where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze. Multi-day cruise check-in happens at piers within the Chaotianmen area—not at random city wharfs used by Two Rivers night boats.

TopicTraveler note
LocationNanbin Road / Changbin Road riverfront, Yuzhong Peninsula—use the pier name on your confirmation, not “Chaotianmen” alone
City contextChaotianmen Square and the Chaotianmen Bridge are landmarks; taxi and Didi drivers need the specific terminal
Downstream embarkMost Chongqing → Yichang sailings embark here on Day 1 evening or late afternoon per operator schedule
Upstream disembarkYichang → Chongqing sailings end here on the final morning—plan Chongqing city time after baggage clearance
Night cruise confusionChongqing Two Rivers sightseeing boats also leave from the broader riverfront—verify multi-day cruise ship name on the ticket

Hotels in Yuzhong, Nan’an (across the river), or near Hongyadong work well for pre-embarkation nights with taxi access to assigned piers.

Yichang: Multiple Terminals

Yichang spreads cruise traffic across several piers east of downtown, tied to Three Gorges Dam navigation and water-level management. Your confirmation should name one of these (or a nearby coach assembly point):

Terminal / areaRole on many sailings
Maoping (秭归港 / Maoping port area)Common upstream embark and downstream disembark pier; linked to Three Gorges Dam visitor logistics
Zigui (秭归 / Zigui county wharves)Alternate embark/disembark when scheduling or water level shifts traffic
Sandouping (三斗坪)Dam-adjacent area; coach connections between dam visitor sites and ships
Yichang urban piersSome operators use city-area terminals for transfers—follow the confirmation, not a generic “Yichang port”

Do not assume every Victoria Cruises or Century Cruises sailing uses the same Yichang pier week to week. Pier assignments can change with river conditions and municipal rules.

Airport and Rail Transfer Tables

Chongqing (embark or disembark)

OriginTypical distance / time to Chaotianmen piersPractical note
Chongqing Jiangbei Airport (CKG)~25–35 km; 45–75 min by taxi/DidiAllow margin for tunnel traffic; pre-book if arriving late evening
Chongqing West railway station (高铁)~20–30 km; 40–60 minHigh-speed rail from Chengdu, Guiyang, etc.
Chongqing North railway station~15–25 km; 30–50 minMany long-distance trains
Hongyadong / Jiefangbei hotels~3–8 km; 15–25 minPopular pre-cruise hotel zones

Yichang (embark or disembark)

OriginTypical distance / time to Maoping / Zigui piersPractical note
Yichang Three Gorges Airport (YIH)~45–70 km to Maoping area; 60–90 minSmaller airport; fewer international connections—many travelers route via Wuhan or Chongqing
Yichang East railway station~40–60 km to Maoping; 50–80 minHigh-speed rail hub for Wuhan direction
Downtown Yichang hotels~35–50 km to Maoping; 45–70 minOvernight downtown is workable with early transfer on embarkation day

Package quotes sometimes include airport or station transfers—list which airport (CKG vs YIH) is covered before you assume.

Disembarkation and Buffer Planning

ScenarioRecommended buffer
Domestic flight same day after Yichang disembarkOnly if confirmation end time + Maoping→YIH transfer + airport check-in fits—often tight
International connection after disembarkNext-day flight from Wuhan, Chongqing, or Shanghai hub is safer
High-speed rail after disembarkBook train 3+ hours after published gangway-off time; dam excursion days run long
Upstream arrival ChongqingAfternoon city plans OK; avoid stacking Hongyadong night tour before baggage is off ship
Downstream arrival Yichang + dam visit morningDam coach queues can push afternoon disembark—do not book noon trains without margin

Dam-day programs near Sandouping and the Three Gorges Dam visitor zone add variable coach time. If your sailing lists dam sightseeing on disembarkation morning, treat noon departures as high risk.

Pier Names in Chinese (for drivers)

Ask your booking channel for the official Chinese pier name on the confirmation. Common patterns include 重庆朝天门码头 (Chongqing Chaotianmen wharf area) and 秭归港 (Maoping / Zigui port district). Showing the Chinese string to Didi or hotel concierge reduces wrong-drop errors.

Common Mistakes

  1. Taxi to “Chaotianmen” without the terminal sub-name and a 10-minute walk with luggage along the waterfront.
  2. Flying into CKG the morning of downstream embarkation after an overnight international leg.
  3. Assuming Yichang pier is downtown—Maoping is nearly an hour from city center.
  4. Booking Two Rivers night cruise tickets when the hotel concierge meant the Three Gorges cruise pier.
  5. Same-day international flight after dam excursion disembarkation without 4+ hours of margin.
  6. Packing passports in checked pier luggage during embarkation hand-off.
