Yangtze Cruise Ports & Boarding: Chongqing and Yichang

Boarding a Yangtze cruise is slightly more complicated than arriving at a conventional ocean-cruise terminal. Chongqing's Chaotianmen riverfront contains several individual piers, while at the Yichang end many passengers first report to a city transfer point and then travel by shuttle to the actual ship at Maoping Port.

For a standard downstream cruise, the usual pattern is Chongqing → Yichang: board around Chaotianmen and finish at Maoping before the cruise program transfers you toward central Yichang. Upstream works in reverse: reach the designated Yichang collection point or Maoping Port, board the ship, and finish in Chongqing.

The exact pier is not something to guess from a map. Use the boarding instructions issued for your specific ship and departure date, because pier assignments and transfer arrangements can change.

Where Do Yangtze Cruises Board?

The table above covers the standard pattern, not every ship. Some vessels use different Yichang boarding arrangements, and river conditions can occasionally move Chongqing embarkation away from Chaotianmen. Your final cruise confirmation overrides any general guide.

Chongqing Boarding: Chaotianmen Dock

Chaotianmen is the main Chongqing gateway for multi-day Yangtze cruises. It sits at the eastern tip of the Yuzhong Peninsula, where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze, close to central Chongqing sights such as Raffles City, Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave.

The important detail is that Chaotianmen is not one single boarding gate. There are multiple river piers along the waterfront, and different ships can use different pier numbers. "Chaotianmen" alone is therefore not precise enough when you are carrying luggage and trying to board before departure.

What you need before leaving your hotel:

* cruise ship name * exact Chaotianmen pier / wharf number * boarding time * Chinese pier name or address * contact number for the cruise or booking channel

The exact pier may only be reconfirmed shortly before departure. Save the final message or confirmation offline and show the Chinese pier information to your driver.

Can the Chongqing Boarding Port Change?

Yes. Chaotianmen is the normal embarkation point, but Yangtze water levels can occasionally make it unsuitable for a particular ship. When that happens, cruise operators may move boarding to another river port such as Fengdu or Fuling.

You normally do not need to arrange the long transfer yourself. The cruise operator will designate a Chongqing meeting point and arrange transportation to the replacement port. The important thing is to check messages from your cruise provider during the final day before boarding.

Do not travel directly to Fengdu or Fuling unless your cruise confirmation specifically tells you to do so.

Getting to Chaotianmen

These are planning estimates, not guaranteed travel times. Chongqing traffic, tunnels and the steep riverfront road system can add substantial time.

Metro Line 1 reaches Chaotianmen Station and can work for light travelers, but a taxi, Didi or private transfer is usually easier with cruise luggage. The final walk varies depending on the assigned pier.

What Time Should You Arrive in Chongqing?

Most downstream cruises board in the late afternoon or early evening. The exact check-in window depends on the ship, so use the time shown on the confirmation rather than a generic website schedule.

If you are flying or taking a long-distance train into Chongqing on embarkation day, build in several hours of margin. Where possible, arriving in Chongqing the previous day is safer and also gives you time to explore the city before the cruise.

Once the ship leaves its pier, joining it later may be difficult or impossible. If a flight or train delay threatens your boarding window, contact your booking channel immediately.

Yichang Boarding: Maoping Port and the Cruise Transfer System

Yichang causes more confusion than Chongqing because the place where you first meet the cruise transfer is often not the place where the ship is waiting.

Most mainstream Chongqing–Yichang cruise ships use Maoping Port, in Zigui County upstream of the Three Gorges Dam. You may see the same general area described as Maoping Port, Zigui Port or Maoping / Zigui in cruise information.

For many upstream cruises, passengers do not travel directly to Maoping on their own. Instead, the cruise company provides a shuttle or other arranged transfer from a designated point in Yichang.

Typical upstream boarding:

Yichang airport / railway station / hotel → Three Gorges Tourist Center or another designated collection point → cruise-arranged transfer → Maoping Port → board the ship

What Is the Yichang Three Gorges Tourist Center?

The Yichang Three Gorges Tourist Center (宜昌三峡游客中心), also called Yichang No.9 Dock in some cruise information, is on the riverfront in central Yichang. For many Yangtze cruise passengers, its most important role is as a transfer hub.

For mainstream upstream sailings using Maoping Port, passengers may check in or verify their booking here and then take a cruise-arranged shuttle to the actual ship. The road journey to Maoping normally takes about 1–1.5 hours.

Do not assume that seeing "Three Gorges Tourist Center" on your instructions means your cruise ship is physically docked there. Read the transfer instructions that accompany the address.

The Three Gorges Tourist Center in downtown Yichang and the Three Gorges Dam visitor area are completely different places.

Do All Cruise Lines Use the Same Yichang Pier?

No. Maoping is the standard boarding area for many mainstream cruises, but there are exceptions and special transfer arrangements.

These patterns can change. Treat this table as orientation only; the boarding document for your departure is the final authority.

From Yichang East Railway Station to the Cruise

Yichang East Railway Station is the most practical arrival point for many cruise passengers traveling from Wuhan, Shanghai or elsewhere by high-speed rail.

Some cruise programs provide a shuttle collection point at or near Yichang East Railway Station. Others direct passengers to the Three Gorges Tourist Center first. Check your sailing instructions before leaving the station.

If your cruise uses Maoping Port, allow roughly 1–1.5 hours for the final transfer from central Yichang to the port, in addition to any waiting and check-in time.

For a same-day upstream departure, reaching Yichang by mid-afternoon is a much safer plan than relying on an evening train connection.

From Yichang Three Gorges Airport to the Cruise

Yichang Three Gorges Airport (YIH) is east of the city, while Maoping Port is upstream beyond central Yichang. That means an airport arrival still leaves a substantial ground transfer before boarding.

Depending on the cruise, you may be asked to travel first to the Three Gorges Tourist Center or another collection point, or use an operator/private transfer toward Maoping.

As a practical rule, avoid choosing a flight that lands close to the cruise check-in deadline. An early- or mid-afternoon arrival provides much more room for baggage collection, city transfer and the final trip to Maoping.

What Time Should You Reach Yichang?

Many upstream cruises board at Maoping in the early evening, with Yichang transfer services beginning earlier in the afternoon. Exact times vary by cruise line and departure.

If arriving on embarkation day, we would normally try to have travelers in Yichang by mid-afternoon. Earlier is better if the arrival is by air, because airport delays and the transfer to Maoping leave less room for recovery.

Finishing a Downstream Cruise in Yichang

A downstream cruise does not normally finish with passengers stepping from the ship directly into central Yichang.

The usual sequence is:

1. Disembark around Maoping.
2. Join the Three Gorges Dam sightseeing program if included.
3. Travel by cruise-arranged coach toward central Yichang.
4. Finish at the Three Gorges Tourist Center or another location stated by the operator.

For many standard programs, passengers reach central Yichang around early afternoon rather than first thing in the morning. Optional experiences such as the ship lift can change the timing.

This is why an early-afternoon train or flight can be risky even though the cruise technically reaches the Yichang area in the morning.

Finishing an Upstream Cruise in Chongqing

Upstream cruises normally reach Chongqing on the final morning and disembark around Chaotianmen. The exact time and pier depend on the sailing.

If river conditions require a different arrival port, the cruise operator may arrange onward transportation into Chongqing. Check the final onboard briefing before arranging a pickup.

A same-day Chongqing hotel, city tour or later flight is usually straightforward, but avoid scheduling something that depends on an exact minute of disembarkation.

What to Have Ready Before You Leave the Hotel

Keep your passport and confirmation with you rather than packing them inside luggage handed to a porter.

Useful Port Names in Chinese

Use the exact Chinese wording from your cruise confirmation whenever one is supplied. The table above is for orientation, not a substitute for the assigned pier number.

How Much Time Should You Leave After the Cruise?

Do not plan onward transportation from the moment the ship reaches its final port. Disembarkation, luggage, dam sightseeing and cruise transfers can add several hours.

For downstream cruises, the most common planning mistake is treating Maoping arrival time as the same thing as being free in central Yichang. It is not.

Should You Arrive the Day Before the Cruise?

If your China itinerary allows it, yes.

For a downstream cruise, one or two nights in Chongqing before boarding works particularly well because Chaotianmen is already in the city center and Chongqing is worth visiting in its own right.

For an upstream cruise, arriving in Yichang the day before is less essential when you have an early train arrival and a confirmed cruise transfer, but it removes most of the risk from delayed transport.

We would be especially cautious about flying into either city on the same day after a long international journey.

Common Boarding Mistakes

1. Going to "Chaotianmen" without the exact pier number. The riverfront contains multiple wharves.

1. Assuming the Yichang Three Gorges Tourist Center is the ship's pier. For many cruises it is the transfer point for Maoping.

1. Treating Maoping and downtown Yichang as the same place. They are separated by a substantial road transfer.

1. Booking a tight flight or train after the downstream cruise. The dam excursion and transfer into central Yichang happen after leaving the ship.

1. Ignoring a last-minute port-change notice. Water conditions can move Chongqing boarding away from Chaotianmen.

1. Packing the passport inside checked or porter-handled luggage. Keep identification and cruise confirmation with you.
