Xi'an itinerary at a glance
Xi'an works well as a 1, 2 or 3-day stop, depending on how much of the city-wall cluster, Muslim Quarter and pagoda you want beyond the Terracotta Warriors. Here's how to sequence each length of trip.
- 1-day focus: Terracotta Warriors, plus a city-center evening
- 2-day focus: Add the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and more time in the Muslim Quarter
- 3-day focus: Add a full city-wall walk or cycle, and more flexible meal planning
- Fixed constraint: The Terracotta Warriors need a dedicated half day due to distance from downtown
How many days do you actually need?
One day covers the essentials if you're tight on time elsewhere in China. Two days lets you add the pagoda and slow down the food side of the trip. Three days adds a proper city-wall walk or cycle and room for a day trip if you want one.
1, 2 and 3-day plans
This is a starting framework, not a fixed schedule — swap the order of Day 1's evening and Day 2's morning if that fits your arrival time better.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon/Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (all lengths) | Terracotta Warriors | Return to the city center; Bell Tower, Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter food in the evening |
| Day 2 (2 and 3-day plans) | Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Da Ci'en Temple | More time in the Muslim Quarter, or the Great Mosque if you skipped it on Day 1 |
| Day 3 (3-day plans) | A longer city-wall walk or bike loop | Free time, a day trip outside the city, or revisiting a favorite food street |
If you have more time
Travelers with an extra day sometimes add a trip to Huaqing Palace and Mount Li outside the city, or the Shaanxi History Museum for broader regional context. Neither has a dedicated guide on this site yet — confirm current hours and access locally.
How the days are structured
- Day 1 — Terracotta Warriors (far) + city-center evening (close)
- Day 2 — Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (moderate distance) + Muslim Quarter (close)
- Day 3 — City Wall loop (close, but time-consuming) + free time or a day trip
Common itinerary mistakes
Putting the Terracotta Warriors on a half day with something else
Travel time and the size of the site mean it rarely pairs well with another major sight on the same morning or afternoon.
Not pre-planning transport to the Terracotta Warriors
Deciding on the day between a bus, taxi or private car can eat into your visit time — sort this out in advance.
Skipping meal planning
The Muslim Quarter's best food is easy to rush through if you treat it as a five-minute stop rather than building real time into your evening.
Cramming all three towers, the wall and the pagoda into two days
It's possible but tiring; if you have three days, spread things out rather than trying to compress a three-day plan into two.
Xi'an itinerary FAQ
- Most travelers spend 2-3 days: one for the Terracotta Warriors, and one or two more for the city wall, Muslim Quarter, Great Mosque and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda.
- Yes, with a focused plan — the Terracotta Warriors in the morning and the city-center cluster (Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Muslim Quarter) in the evening — but you'll skip the pagoda and a full city-wall walk.
- Day 1 for the Terracotta Warriors and a city-center evening; Day 2 for the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and a fuller Muslim Quarter visit.
- A longer city-wall walk or bike loop, plus flexible time for a day trip or revisiting a favorite food stop.
- It depends on arrival time and how tired you'll be from travel — many visitors prefer a fresher day for the half-day trip rather than doing it right after a flight or train.
- They're close together inside the old city, so both fit comfortably into a single afternoon or evening alongside the Bell Tower and Drum Tower.
