Distance and drive time per section
| Section | Distance from central Beijing | Drive time (off-peak) | Drive time (peak return) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Badaling | ~65-80 km | 1-1.5 hr | ~2 hr |
| Mutianyu | ~70-85 km | 1.5-2 hr | ~2-2.5 hr |
| Huanghuacheng | ~75-90 km | 1.5-2 hr | ~2-2.5 hr |
| Juyongguan | ~60-65 km | ~1 hr | ~1.5-2 hr |
| Simatai | ~120-140 km | ~2.5 hr | ~3 hr |
| Jinshanling | ~130-150 km | 2.5-3 hr | ~3-3.5 hr |
| Gubeikou | ~130-150 km | 2.5-3 hr | ~3-3.5 hr |
Which section is closest to central Beijing?
Juyongguan is technically closest (~60-65 km, ~1 hour) but is mainly a fortress, not a long wall walk. For a full section visit, Badaling at ~65-80 km is closest. Mutianyu at ~70-85 km is the international-visitor default and only adds about 30 minutes.
- Juyongguan: closest but small.
- Badaling: closest full section.
- Mutianyu: only ~30 min further; usually preferred for international visitors.
How much does traffic add?
30 to 60 minutes on the return leg after 4 PM on weekdays, more on Friday afternoons and the eve of public holidays. Beijing's ring-road system loads up on weekday late afternoons; weekend returns are usually faster than weekday rush.
- Off-peak: drive time as listed.
- Weekday return after 4 PM: +30-60 min.
- Friday afternoon and pre-holiday: +60-120 min, plan to leave the wall by 2-3 PM.
How far are airports from each section?
From PEK: Mutianyu ~50-65 km (1-1.5 hr), Badaling ~70 km (1.5 hr), Jinshanling ~140 km (2-2.5 hr). From PKX (Daxing): add 30-60 minutes to each. See our 'closest airport' page for full table.
- PEK is closer to every Beijing-area section than PKX.
- Tianjin and Shijiazhuang airports are not practical for Great Wall day trips from those airports.
Common mistakes about distance
Using straight-line distance
Driving distance is 10-20% longer than the dot-to-dot on a map. Always plan from drive time.
Not budgeting return traffic
Beijing return rush is the silent killer of DIY Great Wall days. Leave the wall by 2-3 PM on weekdays for safety.
Picking by 'closest' without considering section character
Badaling is closer than Mutianyu but much more crowded. Distance is one input, not the input.

Pair distance with the right transport
Distance alone doesn't pick a section. Pair it with section character (crowds, hiking, family-friendliness) and transport mode.
We arrange private day trips with hotel pickup and return planning that accounts for the traffic above.
