The short answer on airports
Beijing Capital International (PEK) is the closest practical airport to the Great Wall for international visitors. PEK to Mutianyu is about 50-65 km and 1 to 1.5 hours; PEK to Badaling is ~70 km and 1.5 hours; PEK to Jinshanling is ~140 km and 2 to 2.5 hours. Beijing Daxing (PKX) sits south of the city, so all Great Wall sections are 30-60 minutes further than from PEK.
- Drive time from Beijing: Airport-to-section: 1-2.5 hours typical
- Typical visit style: Layover-day total: 10-14 hours minimum for Mutianyu fit
- Difficulty: Plan to PEK, not PKX, for Great Wall layovers
- Crowds: Airport security buffer is the silent risk
- Best for: Layover travelers checking Great Wall day feasibility; Anyone choosing between PEK and PKX for a Great Wall trip; Tianjin and Shijiazhuang inbound travelers comparing options
- Less ideal for: Already inside Beijing - skip to 'how far from Beijing'

PEK vs PKX - which is better for a Great Wall layover?
PEK by a wide margin. PEK is north of central Beijing, on the same side as every Beijing-area Great Wall section. PKX is south of Beijing, so a Great Wall layover from PKX adds 60-120 minutes round trip vs PEK. For a typical 10-12 hour layover with Mutianyu, PEK works; PKX requires 14+ hours and most travelers skip the wall.
- PEK + Mutianyu: 10-12 hour layover fits.
- PKX + Mutianyu: 14+ hour layover needed for safety buffer.
- If you have a choice when booking the connection, pick PEK for a Great Wall layover.
What layover window do I need for a Great Wall day?
Minimum 10 hours at PEK to fit Mutianyu safely (counted gate-to-gate). 12-14 hours is comfortable. PKX needs 14+ hours. Add 90 minutes for re-entry security at the airport on the return leg.
- 10 hours PEK: feasible but tight; Mutianyu only, no buffer.
- 12-14 hours PEK: comfortable for Mutianyu, real on-wall time.
- 16+ hours: Jinshanling becomes possible.
- PKX: add 2 hours to all of the above.
What about Tianjin (TSN) and Shijiazhuang (SJW)?
TSN is closer to the Tianjin-side wall (Huangyaguan, ~80 km) but far from every Beijing-area section. SJW (Shijiazhuang) is not practical for any Beijing-area section. If your international flight lands at TSN, Huangyaguan is your only realistic Great Wall day; otherwise, fly into PEK.
- TSN: Huangyaguan only practical.
- SJW: not a Great Wall airport.
- International visitors should aim for PEK.
Common mistakes when picking an airport for the Great Wall
Booking PKX for a Great Wall layover
PKX is on the wrong side of Beijing. Even Mutianyu adds an extra hour each way; tight layovers fail.
Underestimating airport re-entry time
Add 90 minutes between arriving back at the terminal and your boarding gate. Security and immigration take longer on international departures.
Trying to do Jinshanling from PKX on a layover
Mathematically possible only with 18+ hour layovers. Most travelers fail this; book Mutianyu instead.
