Alphabetic printers can often work with a few dozen sorts plus extras. Chinese printers needed far more distinct graphs for many texts, which raised the cost of cutting, storing and finding characters during composition. That cost structure helps explain why finished woodblock pages remained competitive for stable editions. Why Woodblock Printing Continued
