The short answer on tickets
Temple of Heaven tickets come in two types. The park-only ticket (15 RMB peak / 10 RMB off-season) gets you into the cypress parkland, the morning local-life areas (tai chi, water calligraphy, choir), and an outside view of the structures. The through-ticket (35 RMB peak / 30 RMB off-season) adds entry into the three signature structures - Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Imperial Vault of Heaven (with Echo Wall), Circular Mound Altar. Most international visitors should buy the through-ticket; park-only works for a morning walk with locals or a repeat short visit. Buy at any of the four gate ticket windows or via OTA. ID (passport) is asked at the gate but enforced loosely.

Park-only vs through-ticket decision
Buy the through-ticket if you are a first-time visitor or have over 90 minutes on site. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (the icon) and Circular Mound Altar are inside the through-ticket gates - park-only stops you at the perimeter and you only see them from outside. Buy park-only only if you have under 60 min for a morning walk, or if you're returning for a second visit focused on local life.
- First-time visitor: through-ticket.
- Over 90 min on site: through-ticket.
- Under 60 min walk: park-only ok.
- Repeat visitor morning walk: park-only ok.
Where to book
Three channels. (1) Walk-up at the gate ticket window - works in most cases; queues under 10 min. (2) Hotel concierge or tour operator. (3) Major OTAs (Trip.com, Klook) - 50-80 RMB total including service fee. The Temple of Heaven is one of the most walk-up-friendly imperial sites in Beijing - the through-ticket is rarely sold out.

- Queues under 10 min typical.
- OTA: 50-80 RMB convenience markup.

ID / passport rules
Passport is required at the gate by policy, but enforcement is lighter than at the Forbidden City. Tickets are not strictly name-linked. Children's passports usually not required. Senior 60+ half price granted with passport showing age - some clerks accept foreign passports, others ask for Chinese ID; ask at the window.
- Passport required at gate (policy).

- Not name-linked.
- Senior 60+ half price - clerk discretion for foreign passports.
Common Temple of Heaven ticket mistakes
Park-only and disappointment
If you wanted to see the Hall of Prayer up close, park-only stops you at the perimeter. Buy through-ticket.
Forgetting passport
Policy requires it. Some clerks check, some don't.
Buying expensive OTA tickets
Walk-up usually works at ToH. Don't pay 80 RMB on Trip.com for a 35 RMB ticket.
Going on October 1-7
National Day crowds peak even here. Reschedule by a week.
