Route 1: South-to-North axis walk (2 hours)

The standard structures-focused route. Enter East Gate, walk west then south to the Circular Mound Altar (the open 3-tier marble altar at the south end of the imperial axis, where the emperor performed the winter solstice prayer). Then north to the Imperial Vault of Heaven (small round hall with the famous Echo Wall around it - clap once near one side and the sound echoes back from the other side). Continue north to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (38m triple-eaved blue-roofed round hall - the iconic Temple of Heaven photograph). Exit through the North Gate or walk back to East Gate. Total 2 hours.

  • East Gate entry.
  • Circular Mound Altar (south).
  • Imperial Vault + Echo Wall (mid).
  • Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (north).
  • Exit North or back to East.
  • Total: 2 hr.

Route 2: Morning local-life loop (90 minutes)

The culture-seeker route. Enter East Gate at 6-7 AM with park-only ticket (15 RMB peak). Walk south along the East Wall path: water-calligraphy seniors writing on the stone paths with large brushes, ballroom dancers in pairs, choirs of retirees singing revolutionary songs and Peking opera. Loop west through the south plaza (tai chi practitioners by the hundred), then north up the West Wall path (chess and Chinese poker tables, bird walkers with caged songbirds), and back to East Gate. Skip the through-ticket structures or photograph them from outside. Best done 6:30-8:30 AM before structures open.

  • 6-7 AM East Gate, park-only 15 RMB.
  • East Wall path: water calligraphy + ballroom dance + choirs.
  • South plaza: tai chi (hundreds).
  • West Wall path: chess + Chinese poker + bird walkers.
  • Back to East Gate by 8:30 AM.
  • Total: 90 min.

Route 3: Half-day deep (3 hours)

The cultural-depth itinerary - combines route 2 morning local-life loop with route 1 south-to-north axis walk. Plan: 6:30 AM East Gate entry (park-only or through-ticket), 60 min morning loop, 8 AM structures open: switch to axis walk (south-to-north), exit by 9:30 AM. Total 3 hours, ~3 km walking. The 'Temple of Heaven done right' route - costs 35 RMB through-ticket and 1 extra hour over the standard 2-hour visit, but doubles the cultural impact.

  • 6:30 AM East Gate entry.
  • 60 min morning local-life loop.
  • 8 AM structures open: axis walk south-to-north.
  • Exit by 9:30 AM.
  • Total: 3 hr, ~3 km.
  • 'Done right' route.

Common route mistakes

Doing route 1 at midday and missing route 2

Midday gives crowds + heat + missed local life. 6-9 AM gives all three benefits.

Skipping the Circular Mound Altar

Less iconic than Hall of Prayer but cosmologically the climax. Don't skip.

Trying route 2 at 10 AM

Local-life scene thins after 9 AM as tourists arrive. 6:30-8:30 AM is the window.

Walking the full park without a route plan

273 hectares - easy to lose orientation. Pick one of the three named routes.
