Square south, FC north
Tiananmen Square sits directly south of the Forbidden City and forms the entry approach. Together they take 3.5 to 4.5 hours: 30-45 minutes in the square (Monument to the People's Heroes, Mao Mausoleum if you want, Great Hall of the People exterior), 800 m walk north through the Tiananmen Gate and Duanmen, then 2.5-3 hours in the Forbidden City.
- Drive time from Beijing: Subway Line 1 to Qianmen / Tiananmen East / West
- Typical visit style: 3.5-4.5 hours combined; 2.5-3 hr FC alone
- Difficulty: Easy walking; security buffer is the slowest part
- Crowds: Square crowded on holidays; FC crowded midday
- Best for: First-time visitors planning both same day; Travellers comparing whether to add the square
- Less ideal for: Time-poor visitors - skip the square detail and walk through
