The 3-hour central axis route
The standard Forbidden City route runs south to north along the central axis - the same path Ming and Qing emperors used. Enter at Meridian Gate (south), cross the Golden Stream bridges, pass through the Gate of Supreme Harmony, see the Three Great Halls of the Outer Court, continue into the Inner Court palaces, end at the Imperial Garden, exit at the North Gate (Shenwumen). About 1 km in walking distance, 2.5 to 3 hours including stops at major halls.
- Drive time from Beijing: n/a - on-foot route inside the FC
- Typical visit style: 2.5-3 hours; up to 5 hours with side galleries
- Difficulty: Easy walking; 10-15 marble steps at each major hall plinth
- Crowds: Three Great Halls are the densest crowd points
- Best for: First-time visitors; Anyone wanting one clear route to follow; Self-guided walkers using an audio guide
- Less ideal for: Visitors with under 2 hours - use the fast 90-minute version

The standard 3-hour route
Walk all 12 axis stops at a comfortable pace, photographing the Three Great Halls and pausing in the Imperial Garden. Use the audio guide at the main halls. This is the international-visitor default and what most guided tours follow.
- 12 axis stops; ~1 km walking distance.
- Time on Three Great Halls: 30-40 min total.
- Imperial Garden: 20-30 min.
- Exit North Gate, 5-min walk to Jingshan park.
The fast 90-minute route
When you only have 90 minutes: skip the Gate of Supreme Harmony detail, photograph the Three Great Halls from the plinth without climbing in (saves 10 min each), walk the Inner Court at pace, spend 10 min in the Imperial Garden, exit North Gate. Tight but feasible.
- Photograph halls from plinth - no interior climb.
- Inner Court at pace (10 min).
- Imperial Garden: 10 min.
- Total: 90 min Meridian to North Gate.
The slow 5-hour route
Add the Treasure Gallery (northeast, 60-90 min) and the Clock Gallery (central east, 45-60 min), pause at the Western and Eastern Six Palaces for imperial concubine quarters detail. This is the depth route for photographers and history-curious.
- Central axis: 2.5-3 hr.
- Treasure Gallery: 60-90 min.
- Clock Gallery: 45-60 min (demo 11 AM or 2 PM).
- Western or Eastern Six Palaces: 30-45 min each.
Side palaces worth detouring
Three to consider on a 3.5-4 hour visit. (1) Hall of Mental Cultivation (Yangxindian, east side) - private working office of late-Qing emperors. (2) Hall of Imperial Supremacy area (northeast Treasure Gallery) - jade and gold. (3) Western Six Palaces (Yikun Gong, Chuxiu Gong) - concubine residences, smaller scale than the main axis.
- Hall of Mental Cultivation: private imperial office.
- Hall of Imperial Supremacy: Treasure Gallery (ticket extra).
- Western Six Palaces: concubine quarters.
- All add 30-45 min to the standard route.
Common route mistakes
Rushing the Three Great Halls
These are the architectural climax. Spend 30-40 min total here, not 10.
Skipping the Inner Court
The Outer Court is ceremonial; the Inner Court is where the emperors actually lived. Skip it and miss half the story.
Trying to do every side palace
There are too many for one visit. Pick one extra (Hall of Mental Cultivation or Treasure Gallery), not all.
Exiting Meridian Gate
Meridian Gate is entry-only since 2014. Exit North or East Gate.
