8+ hours at PEK works

A Forbidden City visit fits an 8-10 hour layover at PEK (Beijing Capital Airport). The realistic schedule: 90 minutes airport-to-Forbidden City by private driver, 30 minutes Tiananmen Square security buffer, 90 minutes on the Forbidden City central axis (fast route, no side galleries), 90 minutes return drive with airport check-in 90 minutes before departure. Skip PKX (Daxing) - it's 60-90 min farther from central Beijing, making the same trip require 10-12 hours.

  • Drive time from Beijing: PEK to central Beijing: 60-90 min off-peak
  • Typical visit style: 10 hours total airport-to-airport
  • Difficulty: Logistically heavy; physically light
  • Crowds: Standard Forbidden City crowds apply - book 8:30 AM slot
  • Best for: PEK layover 8+ hours; International transit passengers
  • Less ideal for: PKX (Daxing) layovers; PEK under 8 hours; Visa-on-arrival travellers without 144-hour transit clearance

First-time China + 8 hoursYes - high reward144-hour transit visa required

144-hour transit visa

China offers a 144-hour visa-free transit (TWOV) for passport holders of 53 eligible countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, etc.) at PEK Beijing airport. Requirement: onward flight to a third country (not the country of origin) within 144 hours. Apply at the immigration counter on arrival - allow 60-90 min for the visa-on-arrival processing.

  • 144-hour TWOV at PEK.
  • Eligible: US, UK, EU, AU, JP + others.
  • Onward flight to third country required.
  • 60-90 min visa processing at counter.

PEK layover schedule

Realistic 10-hour PEK layover: arrive 6 AM, clear immigration 7:30 AM, meet driver, drive to Forbidden City by 8:30 AM, on the central axis 9-10:30 AM (fast route), lunch quick noodle nearby 10:30-11 AM, return drive 11 AM-12:30 PM, airport security + check-in by 1 PM, departure 3 PM. 8-hour PEK layover compresses lunch but otherwise fits. Under 8 hours: too tight; skip.

  • 6 AM arrival, 7:30 immigration.
  • Forbidden City 9-10:30 AM.
  • Lunch 10:30-11 AM.
  • Airport check-in by 1 PM.
  • 3 PM departure.

What to skip

Three on-site compressions. (1) Skip side galleries - Treasure, Clock, Hall of Mental Cultivation - save them for a future visit. (2) Skip the Jingshan climb afterward - 45-60 min you don't have. (3) Skip in-depth Inner Court palaces - photograph from outside, move on. Net: fast 90-min central axis only, exit North Gate, immediate driver pickup.

  • Skip side galleries.
  • Skip Jingshan climb.
  • Skip in-depth Inner Court.
  • Net: 90-min axis only.

Why PKX doesn't work

PKX (Daxing) is 60-90 minutes farther from central Beijing than PEK. Same Forbidden City visit requires 10-12 hours instead of 8-10. Combined with PKX's smaller transport options and tighter immigration, layovers under 12 hours at PKX should skip the Forbidden City visit. If you have 12+ hours at PKX, it's marginal but feasible.

  • PKX is 60-90 min farther than PEK.
  • Same Forbidden City visit: 10-12 hr from PKX.
  • Smaller transport options.
  • Skip if PKX layover under 12 hr.

Common layover mistakes

Trying with under 8 hours at PEK

Not feasible. Margin too tight if anything delays.

Using PKX without 12+ hour buffer

PKX adds 60-90 min each way. Skip for shorter layovers.

Not booking the Forbidden City ticket ahead

Walk-ups don't exist. Book 7 days ahead even for a layover.

Public transport instead of private driver

Subway adds 30-45 min each way + uncertainty. Private driver is the only realistic mode for a layover.
