Chinese-Taught University Programs
A Chinese-taught university program in China is a degree or a course load delivered in Chinese, and the score you need is the score that program prints. HSK 6 above 210, HSK 6 above 180, HSK 4, and a college’s own level-4 exam are four different gates. DragonTrail does not run a Chinese-taught degree or set the score.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
We will not collapse those gates into one “HSK requirement.” The bachelor’s figure is from Peking University’s 2026 Type A note. The visiting figure is from a page stamped 2024-04-01. The vocational figure is from a 2026 Wuxi brochure that does not print tuition. A preparatory year is what that same Type A note recommends when the bachelor’s score is missing, and the 2026 预科 windows have closed.
At a Glance
| Bachelor’s at 北京大学 | The 2026 undergraduate brochure says Chinese is the medium. A Type A note says Chinese-taught bachelor’s applicants should have HSK 6 above 210, or a comparable level, or consider 预科. |
|---|---|
| Visiting credit courses | The general visiting page asks for the new HSK 6 above 180 for Chinese-taught credit courses, after one undergraduate year. Language classes on that page set no basic Chinese floor. |
| A named Chinese master’s | Teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, on the 2026 fee PDF: two years, full-time, Chinese, total 78,000 RMB. Other Chinese-taught rows differ, and some fees are still blank. |
| Scholarship HSK on one notice | The Bahamas 2026/2027 scholarship note uses HSK 4 for Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral applicants, and HSK 3 for some non-degree scholar categories. That is an embassy scholarship list, not every campus. |
| Vocational gate | 江苏信息职业技术学院’s 2026 page asks for International Chinese level 4, or the college’s own exam, for Chinese-taught 专科 study. It does not ask for HSK 6. |
| Required courses | Order No. 42: Chinese and a China-survey course are compulsory in degree programs for international students. Politics majors also take political theory. Military training is not part of that design for international students under later quality rules. |
| 预科 | One to two years of preparation when you are not yet at the bachelor’s language line. Peking University priced 2026 entry at 27,000 RMB a semester. Those dates have passed. |
| Tuition is separate | Passing HSK does not publish a fee. The bachelor’s brochure still said tuition would be announced after approval. Do not trade a score for a guessed invoice. |
| DragonTrail | We do not administer HSK and we do not lower a university’s score because a different campus printed a lower one. |
The Score Belongs to the Program
Chinese-taught university programs in China are the default for many degrees and the wrong assumption for many English-taught master’s programs. The mistake that hurts applicants is treating HSK as one national cutoff. Peking University’s Type A page for 2026 says undergraduate programs taught in Chinese expect HSK Level 6 with over 210 points, or a corresponding level, and otherwise points you to the Yuke preparatory year. The same university’s visiting page, stamped 2024-04-01, asks for the new HSK 6 above 180 only if you take Chinese-taught credit courses, and it sets no basic Chinese requirement for language classes. One hundred and eighty and two hundred and ten are not a typo. They are two products.
A third and fourth number sit on other issuers. The Chinese embassy in the Bahamas, for the 2026/2027 government scholarship, asked for HSK 4 for Chinese-taught master’s and doctoral applicants and HSK 3 for some non-degree scholars, with language study itself exempt from the non-degree line. 江苏信息职业技术学院 asks for level 4 of the International Chinese Proficiency Standards, or its own exam, for a three-year 专科. English-Taught University Programs is where an IELTS line belongs. Do not answer an English-taught PDF with an HSK certificate unless that PDF asks for one.
Chinese-Taught Degrees at Peking University
The undergraduate brochure is unambiguous about the classroom: four to six years, Chinese as the medium, a graduation certificate after the plan and the thesis defense, and a bachelor’s degree only if the degree rules are met. Tuition on that brochure was still “further notice.” The application fee was 800 RMB. The rounds for September 2026 have closed. HSK 6 above 210 is the Type A scholarship path’s language line, not a sentence we can paste onto every self-funded major without reading that major’s note. Health Science Center applicants are sent to a separate brochure that may add its own language rule.
Graduate Chinese-taught programs are priced one row at a time. The 2026 PDF lists a master’s in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages at 78,000 RMB, two years, full-time, in Chinese. Finance and accounting master’s programs on the same table are also marked Chinese, with totals of 128,000 or 158,000 RMB. Humanities and science rows that are not given a professional name still say the fee will be notified, whether the language cell says Chinese or English. A Chinese classroom does not tell you the invoice. Master Degree Programs holds those rows. Bachelor Degree Programs holds the blank undergraduate tuition.
What Happens When the Score Is Short
The Type A note’s advice is practical: if you do not have the Chinese level for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s, look at 预科. Peking University’s 2026 Yuke notice is one to two years, 27,000 RMB a semester, aimed at high-school graduates who want a later undergraduate place, and it says admission follows an exam and a review. The spring window closed on 26 December 2025. The fall window closed on 8 May 2026. A preparatory year is not a consolation prize you can still buy for 2026 entry, and it is not automatically valid for a different university. Foundation and Pre-University Programs keeps that closure visible.
A one-year Chinese course at a vocational college is another response to a low score, and a weaker one if your goal is 北京大学. Jiangsu’s 2026 page offers that year as a completion certificate, beside a three-year diploma that itself requires level 4. Finishing a language year does not produce HSK 6 above 210 unless you actually reach that score. Ask which exam the degree office will accept, and when it must be dated. An expired certificate is a common reason for a complete file to fail.
Courses a Chinese-Taught Degree Still Adds
Even fluent applicants do not skip the courses the ministry built into the degree. Order No. 42 requires international degree students to take Chinese and a general course on China, and it requires political theory for students in philosophy and political science. Universities record the grades. A quality framework for international students has also said that, in Chinese-taught majors, graduates should be able to use Chinese for the professional work, at a level described as level 5 of the international Chinese standards. That graduation line is higher than several entry lines above. Entry HSK 4 for a scholarship doctorate, if that is the rule you used, is not the same promise as graduation level 5.
Foreign-taught programs are not free of Chinese either, but the expected graduation level in that framework is lower, and it differs for undergraduates and postgraduates. This page is about programs taught in Chinese, so the stricter professional line is the one to ask about. Military-style training that Chinese undergraduates may face is not the model those quality rules set for international students. If a brochure is unclear, ask the international office which articles it follows for your catalog year. DragonTrail will not waive a compulsory course.
A Visiting Classroom Is Not the Degree
You can sit in Chinese-taught courses for a semester without being a degree student. The visiting page prices that at 24,000 RMB if the 2024 figures still hold, and it demands HSK 6 above 180, not 210. The transcript may help a later degree application. It is not the degree. Language-only visiting, at 18,000 RMB a semester on that page, does not even claim those credit courses. Non-Degree University Study separates the statuses. A student who needs a 学士 should not spend a year in the cheaper language class and call it progress toward the bachelor’s unless the degree office has said the year counts.
Scholarship visitors and degree applicants also use different Chinese lines on the same embassy notice. Read the column for your status. A general scholar and a doctoral applicant are not interchangeable. CSCA, required on Peking University’s bachelor’s brochure for government-scholarship applicants, is a subject test on Chinese papers, not a substitute for HSK. Science faculties add physics or chemistry. Passing CSCA does not replace the HSK sentence, and passing HSK does not replace CSCA when the scholarship path demands both.
How To Prepare the Score You Actually Need
Write down the program, the issuer, and the sentence that names the test. Then book that test, not a nearby one. If the sentence says HSK 6 above 210, a level 5 certificate is a different document. If the sentence says the college’s own exam, an external HSK may still be refused. If the sentence is missing, ask before you pay a non-refundable application fee of 400 or 800 RMB. Tests take months. The 2026 rounds we documented will not wait, because they have already closed. The next round’s language line can move. Check it on the new PDF.
DragonTrail can compare two official sentences so you do not apply to a Chinese-taught bachelor’s with a visiting-course score. We cannot issue HSK results, run 预科, or lower 210 to 180. Universities and Schools will not rank campuses by how hard their Chinese test is. What To Study still matters: the right language in the wrong major is not a fit. How To Apply orders the rest of the file after the score exists.

FAQ
Is HSK 4 enough for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s at Peking University?
Not on the Type A note we read. That note says HSK 6 above 210, or a comparable level, for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs, and otherwise recommends the preparatory year. HSK 4 appears on a vocational page and on one embassy’s scholarship note for other levels of study. Use the line for your program.
Why do 180 and 210 both appear?
They are different Peking University products. Visiting Chinese-taught credit courses, on a page stamped 2024-04-01, ask for HSK 6 above 180. The Type A bachelor’s note says above 210. A visiting score does not qualify you for the bachelor’s line, and the bachelor’s line is more than a visiting semester needs.
Does a high HSK score set the tuition?
No. The 2026 undergraduate brochure left tuition for a later notice even while teaching in Chinese. A Chinese-taught master’s can show a total, such as 78,000 RMB for the teaching-Chinese program, or a blank cell. The score gets you into the language column. The fee table is separate.
Can I start the degree and learn Chinese on the way?
Only if the program allows it. The Type A note sends under-score bachelor’s applicants toward 预科 rather than into the degree. The 2026 preparatory windows have closed. A language year elsewhere does not enroll you at Peking University. Ask before you assume you can begin the major immediately.
Are scholarship Chinese requirements the same as admission requirements?
Not always. An embassy notice can set HSK 4 for a Chinese-taught doctorate while a department asks for more, or while a bachelor’s office asks for HSK 6. Meeting the embassy and missing the department still fails. Read both documents for the year you are using.
Do Chinese-taught students also take a course about China?
Order No. 42 says yes for degree programs: Chinese and a China-survey course are compulsory, with political theory added for philosophy and politics majors. A high HSK score does not cross those courses off. Ask how many credits they occupy in your plan.
Is a vocational college’s level-4 exam the same as HSK 6?
No. Jiangsu’s 2026 brochure accepts level 4 or the college’s own level-4 exam for its Chinese-taught diploma. That is a 专科 rule. It will not satisfy a bachelor’s office that printed HSK 6 above 210. The certificates are not substitutes.
What should I send if I am unsure which score applies?
Send the program URL and the sentence that mentions language, plus any HSK report you hold. We will say which product that sentence belongs to. We will not average two scores, book your test, or submit the application.
