Foundation and Pre-University Programs

A foundation or pre-university program in China is language and subject preparation before a degree, and finishing it is not the same thing as being admitted to the degree. Peking University’s 预科 (Yuke) notice for 2026 entry is the dated example on this page. DragonTrail does not run a foundation year.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

We did not find a DragonTrail foundation fee because there isn’t one. The 27,000 RMB semester price and the 800 RMB application fee below are Peking University’s, read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). The application windows on that 2026 notice had already closed. Another university’s 预科 is another notice.

At a Glance

What it isPreparatory study. Peking University describes one to two years of training for high-school graduates who want a bachelor’s at 北京大学, not the bachelor’s itself.
IssuerThe International Students Division at Peking University, project code PKUYUKE, applied as a non-degree program. Passing a later review is what the notice ties to undergraduate admission.
Who it is forThe notice addresses academically strong high-school graduates aiming at a Peking University undergraduate place. It is not a general “year in China” product.
LanguageThe point of this 预科 is Chinese and a transition into Chinese-taught undergraduate study. A Type A note from the same office recommends Yuke if you do not already have HSK 6 above 210 for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s.
2026 windows, now closedSpring 2026 (three semesters): 24 November to 26 December 2025. Fall 2026 (two semesters): 24 November 2025 to 8 May 2026. Both had ended before this page was checked.
Tuition27,000 RMB per semester on that notice, payable in full before registration according to the academic schedule. Not a yearly bundle, and not a DragonTrail rate.
Application fee800 RMB, paid online, non-refundable even if the result is a refusal. Unpaid applications are not reviewed.
What you do not get yetA bachelor’s degree, a graduation certificate, or a promise that the final exam will produce an undergraduate offer. The notice says admission follows the exam and the review.
DragonTrailNo foundation seats. Use the university’s next notice, not this page, for a later intake.

A Preparatory Year Is Not the Degree

Foundation and pre-university programs in China are easy to misread because the host is a university and the hope is a bachelor’s. Order No. 42 puts 预科生 in the non-degree column, beside advanced students and research scholars, and puts 本科生 in the degree column. Peking University’s own Yuke notice says the program gives one to two years of preparation so that students who pass the final examination and the review, and who meet admission standards, are then admitted to the undergraduate program. Until that decision, you are not an undergraduate.

That distinction matters for money and for time. You pay the preparatory fee for the semesters the notice names. You do not yet pay, or receive, the bachelor’s tuition the undergraduate brochure had still not published when we read it. You also do not receive a 学位证书 for completing language and subject preparation. If a commercial “foundation” never names the university that will issue the later degree, ask for that name in writing before you compare it with 北京大学’s 预科.

What Peking University Published for 2026 Entry

The notice we read says the Yuke program was established in 2000 and is aimed at high-school graduates who want undergraduate study at Peking University. Application is online at the university’s international system, under non-degree programs, project code PKUYUKE, with an 800 RMB fee. The notice also asks for paper materials by courier: a signed form, proof of expected graduation or enrollment, a notarized copy of the high-school diploma rather than the original in the mail, transcripts, a personal statement, and recommendation letters. Results of the preliminary review and pre-admission were to be emailed in batches in January, March, and June 2026.

Tuition on that notice is 27,000 RMB a semester, paid in full before registration. Spring 2026 entry was described as three semesters and accepted applications only from 24 November to 26 December 2025. Fall 2026 entry was described as two semesters and accepted applications from 24 November 2025 to 8 May 2026. On 29 October 2026 both windows were in the past. The notice points students to Peking University’s academic calendar for semester dates. We did not turn that calendar into a new intake, and we did not quote a dormitory figure that the fetched notice left incomplete.

The Language Gate the Degree Page Actually Uses

A foundation year is often how a student reaches a Chinese-taught bachelor’s, not a way around the language rule. Peking University’s 2026 Type A scholarship note says applicants for undergraduate programs taught in Chinese should have HSK Level 6 with over 210 points, or a corresponding level, and otherwise recommends the Yuke program. The score on that note is not the score on the visiting-student page, which asks for a newer HSK 6 above 180 for Chinese-taught credit courses. Use the threshold printed on the program you are entering.

English-taught degrees are a different door and usually a different price. Do not buy a Chinese 预科 year in order to join a program that never required it, and do not skip 预科 for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s if the university has told you the HSK score is missing. The foundation page cannot guess which door is yours. Bring the program’s language line. Chinese-Taught University Programs keeps the other thresholds in one place so they are not blended into a single “HSK requirement.”

What Has To Happen After the Preparatory Year

The Yuke notice does not say that attendance equals admission. It says international students who pass the final examination and the review, and who meet admission standards, are admitted to the undergraduate program. That is a second decision. Ask, before you pay 27,000 RMB, what the exam covers, what score is the standard this year, and what happens to a student who passes the language work and still is not offered a bachelor’s place. Those answers should be on the university’s notice or in a written reply, not in a brochure that only says “pathway.”

If the goal is a bachelor’s at a different university, Peking University’s 预科 does not transfer that hope for you. The notice is about Peking University’s undergraduate program. A vocational college’s one-year Chinese course, such as the non-degree Chinese year described by 江苏信息职业技术学院, is another product again: a completion certificate and a transcript, not this 预科. Match the issuer to the degree you want. Bachelor Degree Programs is the next page only after the preparatory offer is real.

Money, Visa Length, and Insurance

Count semesters, not a slogan that says “one year.” The fall 2026 track was two semesters at 27,000 RMB each. The spring 2026 track was three semesters at the same semester price. Housing, meals, books, and insurance were not folded into the 27,000 RMB line we read. Degree students at the same university are told to buy the comprehensive international-student insurance plan before they can register. Ask whether 预科 students are held to that same rule in the year you would start. DragonTrail will not add a housing estimate the notice did not finish.

Visa category follows length. More than 180 days of study is the X1 pattern in the Beijing municipal guide, with an admission notice and, for longer degree study, a JW form, then a residence permit. A multi-semester 预科 is unlikely to fit inside a short X2 stay, but the admission notice is what you take to the consulate, not this paragraph. Application fees already paid on a closed window do not open a new one. How To Apply is the document order. It is not a Yuke form.

How To Use a Later Notice

When Peking University, or any other university, publishes the next 预科 notice, read six lines before you look at photos: who may apply, how many semesters, the semester fee, the application fee and whether it is refundable, the language level the later degree will require, and the sentence that says what happens if you are not admitted to the bachelor’s. If any of those lines is missing, the program is not ready to compare. A page titled for a year that has already started is a record, not an offer.

DragonTrail can sit with you while you read that notice. We cannot mail the courier packet, pay the 800 RMB, or tell a faculty that you have passed an exam you have not sat. University Study in China is the map of the other contracts. Cost of Studying is where housing and daily life sit beside tuition, once the tuition line exists. Until the next Yuke notice is up, do not treat 27,000 RMB as a price you can still pay for 2026 entry.

FAQ

Is a foundation year the same as a bachelor’s degree?

No. Peking University’s Yuke notice is preparatory. Undergraduate admission comes only after the final examination, the review, and the admission standards. Order No. 42 lists 预科 students separately from undergraduates. You should not describe yourself as a bachelor’s student while you are still in the preparatory program.

Can I still apply for Peking University’s 2026 Yuke intake?

Not on the notice we read. Spring 2026 applications closed on 26 December 2025. Fall 2026 applications closed on 8 May 2026. This page was checked on 29 October 2026. A later intake needs a new notice from the university. Do not send money against the closed dates.

Does 27,000 RMB cover a full year?

The notice prices a semester, not a year. Fall 2026 entry was two semesters. Spring 2026 entry was three. Multiply only after you know which track a future notice is selling, and ask what housing and insurance sit outside that line. The figure is Peking University’s, not DragonTrail’s.

Will HSK 6 above 210 let me skip the preparatory year?

Peking University’s Type A note says Chinese-taught undergraduate applicants should have HSK 6 above 210, or a corresponding level, and otherwise recommends Yuke. That is one office’s rule for one scholarship path. Another program can print another score. Ask the program before you buy a year of Chinese you may not need, or skip a year you do need.

Does finishing Yuke guarantee a Peking University bachelor’s place?

The notice does not say that. It says students who pass the final examination and the review and meet admission standards are admitted to the undergraduate program. Ask what the standard is, and what a student does if the review says no. Attendance alone is not the sentence they published.

Can I use this preparatory year to enter a different university?

The notice we read is about undergraduate admission at Peking University. It does not say the year is a portable foundation for every campus in China. If you need a different issuer, get that university’s preparatory rules. A one-year Chinese course at a vocational college is a third product.

Is the 800 RMB application fee refunded if I am refused?

The Yuke notice says the application fee is non-refundable regardless of the result, and that unpaid applications are not reviewed. Pay it only when you are submitting to an open window on the university’s system. DragonTrail does not collect that fee.

What should I prepare before the next notice opens?

A passport, proof of high-school completion or expected graduation with translations if needed, transcripts, and a clear answer to whether you are aiming at Chinese-taught undergraduate study. Keep originals at home until the notice says to send copies. Then read the new dates. Do not reuse May 2026.

Compare study routes, or tell us the credential, the teaching language, and the city. Neither button admits you to a university.
