Non-Degree University Study
Non-degree university study in China is a term, a year, or a preparatory program that does not itself award the degree you might want later. The ministry’s list is 预科, advanced study, and research scholars. A fee on a visiting page is not a bachelor’s tuition, and DragonTrail does not sell the stay.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
The clearest semester prices we could read sit on a Peking University visiting page whose timestamp is 2024-04-01: 18,000 RMB for Chinese courses and 24,000 RMB for credit courses, plus a 400 RMB application fee. The 2026 预科 notice is a different product at 27,000 RMB a semester, and its windows have closed. We did not promote the 2024 page into a confirmed 2026 invoice.

| Other non-degree labels | Senior visiting is described as usually one year. Research-scholar applications are described as open all year. The summer lab says no courses, no credits, and no application or tuition fee. |

Three Non-Degree Statuses, Not One “Study Abroad”
Non-degree university study in China is a legal category before it is a lifestyle. Order No. 42 says a university may enroll international students for degrees — 专科, 本科, master’s, and PhD — or for non-degree study: preparatory students, advanced students, and research scholars. A semester of Chinese, a year as a senior visiting student, and a summer in a laboratory can all be non-degree and still have nothing else in common. The admission letter should name the status. If it names a degree, you are on a degree page, not this one.
The practical test is the paper at the end. A degree route aims at a graduation certificate and, if the rules are met, a 学位证书. A non-degree route aims at a transcript, a certificate of completion, or a record of research that is not a degree. Peking University’s summer lab is the stark version: the visiting hub says courses will not be taken, credits will not be earned, and application and tuition fees are exempted. That is a different gift from a 24,000 RMB credit semester. University Study in China is the map. This page is only the non-degree half.
Visiting Prices, With the Page’s Own Date
The general visiting program says most students come for one semester or one academic year and choose Chinese courses or credit courses. Chinese courses require one completed undergraduate year at the home university and do not set a basic Chinese level. Credit courses require the same year of study, and Chinese-taught credit courses require the new HSK 6 certificate above 180. The fee block says 400 RMB to apply, 18,000 RMB a semester for Chinese courses, and 24,000 RMB a semester for credit courses. The page’s own time stamp is 2024-04-01. Annual windows are written as 1 March to 30 April for a fall semester and 1 November to 30 November for a spring semester.
We will not pretend that stamp is a 2026 price confirmation. Windows described as “each year” can be copied forward on a website after the office has changed the invoice. Before you pay 400 RMB, open the live page and the current academic calendar and see whether the yuan figures still match this paragraph. Scholarship applicants on a separate Type A note were told to apply for general visiting between 1 December 2025 and 15 February 2026, which is another closed window, not the self-funded March window. Visiting Student Programs repeats the route in more detail. It does not add a newer fee.
Preparatory Years and Language Years
预科 is non-degree study with a hope attached. Peking University’s 2026 Yuke notice charges 27,000 RMB a semester for one to two years and says undergraduate admission follows an exam and a review. Until that review, you do not hold the bachelor’s. The application windows for 2026 entry closed in December 2025 and May 2026. A foundation year at another brand, sold without the university’s name, is not this notice. Foundation and Pre-University Programs keeps the closed dates visible.
Vocational colleges also sell non-degree Chinese. 江苏信息职业技术学院’s 2026 page describes a one-year Chinese course that ends with a transcript and a completion certificate, beside a three-year 专科 that is a diploma and therefore not this page. 陕西工业职业技术学院’s 2025 brochure prices a Chinese course separately from its diploma. A language year can be the right product when you want hours of Chinese and a certificate. It is the wrong product when a graduate school has asked for a degree. Ask which document the office will print.
Senior Visiting and Research Scholars
Peking University’s visiting hub describes a senior visiting program as research or professional study under professors, usually for one year, and a research scholar program as cooperation with professors, with the library and electronic resources open to them, and with applications accepted all year. The summer lab, for science and engineering, exempts fees and withholds credits. The hub does not print tuition for the senior year or the research scholar. We will not invent one from the general visiting semester price. A year of senior visiting could be two semesters of something, or a different invoice entirely.
“Open all year” is not the same sentence as “you will be accepted.” A professor still has to want the project, and the international office still has to issue a status the visa office recognizes. An invitation that does not become an admission notice will not become a JW form. DragonTrail does not shop the invitation. If you need credit for a home degree, the research scholar line that earns no credits is the wrong status even if the laboratory is famous. Say that constraint in the first email to the department.
Credit, If Any, Still Belongs to Your Home University
The visiting page advertises credit courses and points to Peking University’s course catalog. It does not say how many 学分 24,000 RMB buys, and it does not say a foreign registrar must accept them. Fudan’s summer session, a shorter non-degree product, is more explicit: a flat fee covers up to six credits of content courses plus physical education and a Chinese course, and the courses are described as credit-transferable. Transfer is still your home university’s decision. A summer lab that bans credits cannot be talked into a transcript after you arrive.
Get the approval in writing before you pay, and ask for the transcript key: contact hours, grade scale, and who signs. Academic Credits and Transcripts is the longer version of that warning. Semester Abroad in China is the one-term case. If your home university will not pre-approve non-degree work, a cheaper semester is not a bargain. It is a semester you may have to repeat.
Visa Length Follows the Status You Were Given
The visiting page splits the visa at six months. Over six months: admission letter, JW202, X1, and a residence permit within 30 days, applied through the international students division. Under six months: X2. The Beijing municipal guide uses 180 days as the same hinge and asks for an admission notice. A non-degree letter is still an admission notice for this purpose. It is not a tourist plan, and a tourist entry is not a substitute the university will register. Insurance is required before Peking University will register degree students; the visiting page says students buy insurance in China and that registration stops if they do not. Read the sentence on the letter you hold.
DragonTrail can help you tell a 预科 year from a visiting semester from a fee-exempt lab. We cannot lodge the 400 RMB, book Zhongguanyuan housing, or extend a stamp. Plan Your Study Stay is arrival and housing after the status is real. Find a Suitable Program will not show a menu of non-degree seats. If the only page you have is dated 2024, ask the university for the current fee before you call the trip confirmed.

FAQ
Is non-degree study a diploma?
No. Order No. 42 separates 预科, advanced study, and research scholars from degree categories. You may receive a transcript or a completion certificate. A graduation certificate and a degree belong to a degree admission. Read the status on the letter before you tell an employer you hold a Chinese degree.
Are 18,000 and 24,000 RMB current prices?
They are the semester fees on Peking University’s general visiting page, which is stamped 2024-04-01. The page also describes application months as if they repeat each year. Confirm both the fee and the window on the live page. We did not find a newer visiting price list to replace them, and we did not invent one.
Do I need HSK for non-degree Chinese classes?
Not for the Chinese-language visiting courses on that page, which say there is no basic Chinese requirement, provided you have finished one undergraduate year. Chinese-taught credit courses on the same page need HSK 6 above 180. 预科 and degree programs use other scores. Pick the line that matches the product.
Can I earn a degree by stacking non-degree semesters?
Not automatically. A visiting semester does not turn into a bachelor’s because you stayed for a second term. 预科 leads to a bachelor’s only if you pass that program’s exam and review. A summer lab that issues no credits cannot be stacked into a transcript the host has refused to create.
Is the summer lab a cheap semester?
It is a different product. Peking University says the international summer lab charges no application or tuition fee, and that students do not take courses or earn credits. A 24,000 RMB credit semester is the product that claims courses. Do not mix the two in a budget or in a home-university credit form.
Which visa is for one semester?
Use the dates on the admission notice. The visiting page says stays over six months use X1 and JW202, and shorter stays use X2. A fall semester can land on either side of that line depending on the calendar. The consulate decides. DragonTrail does not.
Will my university at home accept the courses?
Only if that university says so. Peking University’s visiting page does not promise a foreign credit transfer, and it does not state how many credits the semester fee includes. Ask for pre-approval and for the transcript key. Fudan’s summer cap of six content credits is a different host’s rule.
What should I send if I am choosing between these stays?
Send the letter or the webpage that names the status, the fee, and whether credits are issued. Say if a home degree must accept the work. We will not treat a 2024 price as paid, and we will not enroll you as a visiting student, a 预科 student, or a research scholar.
