Not for every part of Dali — Ancient Town is walkable, but a private driver helps for Erhai highlights or a Shaxi day trip.
Combine Three Pagodas, Panxi S-Bend, Xizhou and Shuanglang in one day, or make the roughly two-hour road trip to Shaxi. Cars cannot drive the protected west-shore Ecological Corridor; the driver waits at a lawful access point while you walk or cycle. With two full days, do Erhai first and Shaxi second.

A practical transport guide to Dali's scattered lakeside towns and the longer road trip to Shaxi — including when a private car is worth it and when you can travel independently. The quoted service is private car + driver, not a guided sightseeing tour.

Not for every part of Dali. Dali Ancient Town is best explored on foot, and a short visit to the western Erhai Ecological Corridor often works better by bicycle or on foot. A private driver becomes worthwhile when you want to combine Three Pagodas, Panxi S-Bend, Xizhou and Shuanglang in one day, or make a round trip to Shaxi Ancient Town, about two hours by road from Dali.
Your plan
Usually start with
Is a private driver worthwhile?
A few hours inside Dali Ancient Town
Walk
No — streets are best explored on foot
Dali Ancient Town + nearby Three Pagodas
Walk + short taxi/DiDi
Optional
Panxi S-Bend alone
Taxi/DiDi to approved access point + walk/cycle
Often not necessary
Dali Ancient Town + Panxi + Xizhou
Taxi/DiDi, small-group bus or hired car
Useful with luggage/family or fixed schedule
Three Pagodas + Panxi + Xizhou + Shuanglang
Private driver
Yes — scattered road stops and return logistics
Dali → Shaxi → Dali on the same day
Bus or private driver
Strong for a round trip on your schedule
Dali → Shaxi with overnight stay
Bus or one-way private transfer
Often no need to retain car overnight
Erhai one day + Shaxi second day
Two-day private driver plan
Good fit if you value continuity and planned pickup
Driver vs taxi / DiDi / public transport
Option
Best for
Weak point
Walking
Dali Ancient Town lanes, cafés and gates
Does not solve Erhai shore or Shaxi road days
Taxi / DiDi
Short hops to Three Pagodas or a corridor access point
Awkward for multi-stop Erhai + Shuanglang with waiting
Bike / walk on Ecological Corridor
Panxi S-Bend and west-shore path segments
Cars cannot drive the protected lakeside path
Public bus
Budget Shaxi trips when the timetable fits
Less flexible for luggage, custom stops or timed return
These stops sit on different road catchments. Shaxi is in Jianchuan County — not an Erhai lakeside village.

Driver tipDriver waits; tickets and temple guiding are separate.
Panxi S-Bend (磻溪S湾)
Famous lakeside bend on the western Erhai Ecological Corridor. Private cars cannot drive the protected path.

Best asDay trip
Driver tipDo not squeeze into an Erhai circuit the same day.
Three practical Dali driver routes
If you have two full days, do Erhai on the first day and Shaxi on the second. It is significantly more comfortable than trying to fit both into a single day.
Option 1 — Erhai & Dali Highlights (1 day)
Approx. 9–10 hours
RouteDali Ancient Town → Three Pagodas → Panxi S-Bend (walk/bike access) → Xizhou → Shuanglang → hotel
Best if you have one full day, want variety, and prefer not to coordinate a string of individual rides. Links west-shore and northeast-shore highlights — not an automatic full Erhai circumnavigation.
Why hire a driver?
Scattered road stops, waiting at corridor and town access points, and a reliable return without rebooking rides.
Best for
First-time Dali visitors with one sightseeing day
Limitations
Not a guaranteed complete Erhai circuit. Longer Three Pagodas or Panxi cycling means shortening other stops.
Option 2 — Shaxi Ancient Town (1 day)
Approx. 8–10 hours
RouteDali hotel → Shaxi / Sideng market area → Yujin Bridge → Dali hotel
Shaxi rewards an unhurried visit. Allow roughly two hours each way; mountain-road traffic and pickup location affect timing. Shibao Mountain / Stone Bell Hill is a possible extra, not part of the standard itinerary.
Why hire a driver?
Same-day return with luggage storage and a waiting vehicle when bus timing does not fit.
Best for
Tea Horse Road history / slower town visit
Limitations
If you plan to sleep in Shaxi, prefer a one-way transfer instead of a round-trip day charter.
Option 3 — Erhai + Shaxi (2 days)
Two separate full-day services
RouteDay 1: Ancient Town → Three Pagodas → Panxi → Xizhou → Shuanglang. Day 2: Dali hotel → Shaxi → Dali hotel.
The balanced option for first-time visitors who want both Erhai villages and Shaxi. Accommodation remains arranged by the traveler; overnight in Shaxi or onward Lijiang changes the quote.
Why hire a driver?
Continuity across two planned pickup days without rushing both into one itinerary.
Best for
Travelers with two full days
Limitations
Same driver both days is not promised by default. Hotel, meals, guide and tickets are separate unless quoted.
Ready to compare the three routes?
Choose Erhai highlights, Shaxi, or the two-day combination on the commercial page and send your date, group size and hotel location.
The crucial distinction: roads vs the west-shore path
Drivers travel on roads, not inside the west-shore path
The west shore of Erhai includes a protected Ecological Corridor used for walking and cycling. The famous Panxi Village S-Bend (磻溪S湾) is part of this corridor. Private motor vehicles cannot drive along the protected lakeside path. Your driver will use an allowed parking/pickup point, while you walk, cycle or use permitted local services to reach the S-Bend.
Ancient Town and Shuanglang are pedestrian-oriented
Expect short walks between the vehicle pickup point and attractions, shops or lakeside hotels. Share your hotel's exact Chinese name and any mobility needs before booking.
Where private driver value is highest
Group/family travel with children, older travelers or luggage; combining west-shore and Shuanglang stops on a fixed day; a Shaxi day trip with a waiting driver; DLU or Dali railway pickup combined with sightseeing; hotel-to-hotel transfers; customized rural stops or a larger vehicle.
When you probably do not need a driver
You are spending the day entirely in Dali Ancient Town; you want only a short west-shore bike ride; you plan just Three Pagodas plus nearby sights; you will sleep overnight in Shaxi and can use a scheduled bus; you want a full independent cycling experience inside the car-free corridor.
When you probably do not need a driver
If your day is entirely inside Dali Ancient Town, a short west-shore bike ride, or Three Pagodas plus nearby sights with easy taxi hops, keep it simple. Do not book a waiting car only to feel you have “done Dali properly.”
Driver vs guide
A private driver handles transportation, pickup, waiting and the confirmed route. A licensed sightseeing guide is separate unless specifically included. DragonTrail provides English-language booking and trip coordination; do not assume every local driver is fluent in English. The driver normally does not walk around the pagodas, ancient towns or lakeside corridor with you as a licensed guide.
If you want itinerary design, tickets or a licensed guide, start with Private Driver in China.
Typical sedan starting prices
Prices are per vehicle and depend on the route, waiting time, and service scope. Confirm current rates on the booking page before you book.

Dali private driver FAQ
No. Walk within the old town; taxis/DiDi may be sufficient for isolated nearby sights.
No. The S-Bend is on the protected western Ecological Corridor. The driver can take you to a lawful nearby access point, but you enter the lakeside path on foot or by a permitted local transport mode.
Yes, as a highlights day with selective stop durations. It is not a promise of long visits in every place or a complete drive around Erhai. Allow approximately 9–10 hours and adjust for your hotel location.
Not recommended. Shaxi has roughly four hours of round-trip road travel from Dali before exploring the town. Book a separate day if you want the Erhai highlights too.
No direct railway station serves Shaxi Ancient Town. A road transfer is needed from Dali/Jianchuan-area transport connections.
Yes. Request a one-way transfer or modified multi-day itinerary, since a round-trip day-charter price does not cover a different final destination or overnight driver expenses.
No, not as a standard driver-only booking. A licensed sightseeing guide is an optional separate service.
By private vehicle, not per person, based on route, vehicle, hours, pickup/drop-off and route changes. Check the commercial page for approved rates or request a quote.
At the closest lawful pickup or parking point; historic pedestrian lanes are not necessarily vehicle-accessible.
