The 3-tier open marble altar
The Circular Mound Altar (Yuanqiu) is the south-end structure of the Temple of Heaven axis - a 3-tier open white marble altar with no roof, set at the cosmological south. Built 1530 (Jiajing era) and expanded 1740 (Qianlong), the altar is where the Ming and Qing emperors performed the winter solstice prayer for blessings on the empire. The emperor stood on the Heavenly Centre Stone (a circular marble stone) at the precise centre of the top tier during the ceremony - the literal centre of heaven in Chinese cosmology. The altar's design embodies the imperial number 9: each tier has 9 concentric rings of stones, with each ring counting in multiples of 9 (top ring 9, next 18, next 27, etc.) - the maximum imperial cosmological expression.
- Drive time from Beijing: n/a - inside the park
- Typical visit style: 15-20 min standard visit
- Difficulty: Easy - climb stone steps onto each of the 3 tiers (~30 steps total)
- Crowds: Quieter than Hall of Prayer; 8-9 AM ideal
- Best for: History / cosmology-curious visitors; First-time visitors on the axis route; Photographers chasing open-air imperial structures
- Less ideal for: Heavy rain visitors - no shelter on the altar

Why open and roofless
The Circular Mound Altar is deliberately roofless - unlike the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the altar is not a building but a stage. During the winter solstice ceremony, the emperor stood on the Heavenly Centre Stone at the top tier with the open sky above - making direct symbolic communication with Heaven (Tian). The open marble structure is the perfect cosmological vessel: round (heaven), white (purity), open to sky (direct Heaven access), at the south of the axis (the southern position of yang energy). The emperor was the literal Son of Heaven at this moment.
- Deliberately roofless = direct sky / heaven access.
- Stage, not a building.
- Round = heaven shape.
- White marble = purity.
- South of axis = yang energy.
The Heavenly Centre Stone
At the exact centre of the top tier sits the Heavenly Centre Stone (Tianxin Shi) - a circular marble stone roughly 1 metre across. During the winter solstice ceremony, the emperor stood here, raised his arms toward the sky, and chanted the prayer for the empire's blessings. The Chinese tradition treats this stone as the literal centre of heaven - audio acoustics also peak here (clap once on the stone and the sound seems to come from all directions because the surrounding 9 concentric rings of marble stones reflect sound back). Stand on the stone today and try the acoustic effect.
- Circular marble stone, ~1m across.
- Centre of top tier.
- Emperor stood here for winter solstice prayer.
- Acoustic effect: surround sound from 9 rings.
- Try clapping on the stone.
The 9-count cosmological coding
The altar encodes the imperial number 9 (the highest single digit, traditionally representing the emperor's authority). Each of the 3 tiers has 9 concentric rings of marble stones. The rings count in multiples of 9: top ring is 9 stones, next is 18, next 27, etc. The total stone count on the top tier alone is 9 + 18 + 27 + 36 + 45 + 54 + 63 + 72 + 81 = 405 = 9 x 45 stones. Each tier carries the same pattern. The balustrade post counts and step counts also use 9 multiples. The number 9 is the cosmological signature of imperial authority - same as the 9 ridge animals on the Forbidden City's Hall of Supreme Harmony.
- 9 = imperial number.
- Each tier: 9 concentric rings of stones.
- Ring counts in multiples of 9 (9, 18, 27...).
- Top tier total: 405 stones (9 x 45).
- Same cosmological signature as FC's 9 ridge animals.
The surrounding inner-square-outer-round walls
Two concentric walls surround the Circular Mound Altar - an inner square wall and an outer round wall. This is the architectural expression of the 'round heaven, square earth' cosmology: the round altar (heaven) sits within a square boundary (earth), enclosed by a round outer boundary (heaven again, as the cosmic container). The emperor at the centre stood at the heart of this nested cosmological model. Walk around the altar and notice the wall shapes - the symbolism is meant to be experienced, not just read about.
- Inner square wall + outer round wall.
- Round heaven + square earth cosmology.
- Altar (heaven) inside square (earth) inside round (cosmic heaven).
- Nested cosmological model.
- Experiential symbolism.
Common Circular Mound Altar mistakes
Skipping it to get to Hall of Prayer faster
Less iconic but cosmologically the climax. The Heavenly Centre Stone is the literal centre of heaven.
Not standing on the Heavenly Centre Stone
It's the experiential heart of the altar. Stand, clap, listen to the surround-sound effect.
Missing the 9-count details
Count the stones in one ring or the balustrade posts on the top tier - the 9-multiple becomes visible.
Going at midday in summer
No shade on the open altar. Morning or late afternoon.
Circular Mound Altar FAQ
- A 3-tier open white marble altar at the south end of the Temple of Heaven axis. Built 1530, expanded 1740. Where Ming and Qing emperors performed the winter solstice prayer for empire blessings.
- Deliberately open to the sky for direct symbolic communication with Heaven (Tian) during the winter solstice ceremony. The altar is a stage, not a building.
- A circular marble stone at the exact centre of the top tier. The emperor stood here for the winter solstice prayer. Standing on it today produces a surround-sound acoustic effect.
- 9 is the highest single digit and the imperial cosmological number. Each tier has 9 concentric rings of stones; ring counts are multiples of 9. Same coding as the Forbidden City's 9 ridge animals on the Hall of Supreme Harmony.
- Inner square wall + outer round wall = round heaven, square earth cosmology. The altar (heaven) inside the square (earth) inside the round (cosmic heaven).
- Yes - it's the cosmological climax of the Temple of Heaven, even more important conceptually than the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
