A 5-minute walk from the Forbidden City North Gate (Shenwumen) leads to Jingshan park, the artificial hill built from earth excavated for the palace moat. Cross Jingshan Front Street, enter Jingshan park (paid 2 RMB ticket), and climb 20 minutes via stone steps to the summit pavilion - the iconic photo of the Forbidden City from above is taken from here.

How to get to Jingshan

Exit FC North Gate (Shenwumen), turn left or right onto Jingshan Front Street, walk 50 m to the Jingshan park south entrance. 2 RMB ticket, open 6:30 AM-9 PM (last entry 8:30 PM in summer; 8 PM winter).

Climbing time and steps

20 minutes of stone-step climb via switchback paths from the south entrance to the Wanchun Pavilion (summit). Stone steps are uneven and steep in places; closed-toe shoes essential. Two paths up - the central is shorter and steeper; the east is gentler with more views.

Sunset timing

The Wanchun Pavilion summit faces directly south over the Forbidden City. Best at golden hour: 30-45 min before sunset for the warm light on yellow tiles; the rooftop silhouette photo as the sun sets. Summer sunset 7:30-8 PM; winter 5-5:30 PM. Arrive at summit 30 min before sunset.
