How to Get to the Forbidden City

Three transport modes. Subway is the default; taxi works with the right drop pin; walking from nearby is realistic for some hotels.

  • Central Beijing - 15-30 min from most hotels
  • Reading: 3 min
  • Easy with subway; taxi can confuse drivers on exact drop point

Three ways to get to the Meridian Gate

Three ways. (1) Subway Line 1 to Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West - both 8 minutes' walk north to the Meridian Gate. (2) Taxi or Didi to Tiananmen Square - allow 30 min for square security. (3) Walking from Wangfujing (20 min east) or Qianmen (15 min south). Drop pin Wumen for taxi precision.

  • Drive time from Beijing: Central Beijing - 15-30 min from most hotels
  • Typical visit style: Reading: 3 min
  • Difficulty: Easy with subway; taxi can confuse drivers on exact drop point
  • Crowds: Tiananmen Square security buffer dominates
  • Best for: Anyone planning their morning transit; Hotel guests checking the subway vs taxi tradeoff
  • Less ideal for: Already on a guided tour - your driver handles it

Subway: Line 1 Tiananmen East vs West

Both work; both 8-min walk to Meridian Gate. Tiananmen East exits closer to the East Gate of the FC (use after exit if going Wangfujing). Tiananmen West exits slightly closer to Meridian Gate (use for entry). Either is fine for entry - the 100m difference is irrelevant.

  • Both: Line 1, 8-min walk.
  • Tiananmen West: marginally closer to Meridian.
  • Tiananmen East: closer to FC East Gate exit.
  • Use Tiananmen West for entry; East for exit.

Taxi / Didi

Tell the driver 'Tiananmen' or 'Wumen' (Meridian Gate). Drop pin Wumen for precision - some drivers go to the south side of Tiananmen Square (wrong end). Drop-off is at the south entrance of Tiananmen Square; you walk 800 m north through square security.

  • Pin Wumen for exact entrance.
  • Drop-off: south of Tiananmen Square.
  • Walk: 800 m north + 30 min security.
  • Total taxi day-of-FC: 25-40 min.

Walking from Wangfujing

20-25 minutes west from Wangfujing pedestrian street to the Meridian Gate via the south side of Tiananmen Square. Pleasant on cool days; in summer the walk is hot and slow. Faster than the subway if your hotel is in Wangfujing.

  • West from Wangfujing 20-25 min.
  • Subway saves no time from Wangfujing.
  • Cool days: walking wins.
  • Summer: subway preferred.

Security buffer through Tiananmen

30-45 minutes total from any arrival point (subway exit, taxi drop, walking) to the Meridian Gate ticket scan. Square security includes bag scan and passport check at the south entrance. Holiday weekends add 15-30 min.

  • Square security: 30-45 min.
  • Holiday: 45-75 min.
  • Includes: passport check + bag scan.
  • Buffer this on top of your ticket time.

Common transport mistakes

Dropping at Beihai Park by accident

Some drivers mishear 'Wumen' and go to Beihai. Confirm the destination with the pin.

Underestimating Tiananmen Square security

It's not 5 min - it's 30-45 min. Buffer it before your ticket slot.

Using Tiananmen West to exit

Wrong exit. Use Tiananmen East subway for the FC East Gate exit, or walk to Beihai North subway from the North Gate.
