Private transfer plus **official Mutianyu scenic-area hiking**—from easy Tower 14 loops to longer west routes or an extended 14→6 traverse when tickets and weather allow. **Not** a Jiankou wild-wall product.
A Mutianyu Great Wall hiking tour fits visitors who want a more active Wall day than a quick photo stop—but still want a legal, managed, safer route inside the official scenic area.
This is not a wild-wall hike. DragonTrail does not offer Jiankou→Mutianyu wild-wall itineraries: Jiankou involves unrestored, restricted, and high-risk sections, and Beijing Great Wall protection rules prohibit organizing tours or climbing unapproved sections.
Best default route: private pickup from Beijing → scenic shuttle bus → west cable car to Tower 14 → hike toward Tower 18 or 20 → return to 14 → cable car down → return to Beijing. That delivers a real ridge-walk feel while staying in Mutianyu’s official visitor system.
Why choose a safe official Mutianyu hiking tour?
Mutianyu combines restored Ming wall, clear official routes, cable car support, chairlift/toboggan options, ridge views, and safer exits—strong infrastructure for different hiking levels.
Wild-wall hike (Jiankou→Mutianyu):Not offered by DragonTrail.
Mutianyu’s materials describe a west line from the cable car at No.14 toward No.20 (the 19–20 stretch is the steepest and most spectacular on that spine) and an east line around No.6 and nearby landmarks.
This is not a Jiankou-to-Mutianyu hike
Many people land on “Mutianyu hiking” after seeing Jiankou→Mutianyu photos. That traverse is a different product with different legal and safety exposure.
Third-party field reporting (e.g. Great Wall Hiking, 2025) notes the Jiankou→Mutianyu trail can be blocked at the Mutianyu boundary. The China Guide describes Jiankou as not maintained and not ticketed like a normal scenic section.
DragonTrail rule: we deliver safe, legal Great Wall hiking inside approved routes. We do not sell restricted wild-wall crossings.
If you are researching that exact traverse, read our neutral explainer: [Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall hike](/travel-guide/great-wall-guide/mutianyu/jiankou-to-mutianyu-hike).
Route 1: easy Mutianyu walk (Tower 14 → 15/16)
Best for: seniors, families with younger children, layover-style timing, low stamina, first-timers who want light walking.
Route: pickup → Mutianyu visitor area → shuttle → cable car to 14 → walk to 15 or 16 → return 14 → cable car down.
On-wall time: about 45–90 minutes • Site time: about 2–2.5 hours • Difficulty:easy.
Route 2: standard west route (Tower 14 → 20 and back)
Best for: active first-timers, couples, families with older kids, casual hikers, photographers, private day-tour guests.
Route:cable car to 14 → walk west toward 18 → continue to 20 if energy allows → return 14 → cable car down.
On-wall time: about 1.5–2.5 hours • Site time: about 3–4 hours • Difficulty:low to moderate.
The 19→20 finale is the steepest segment on this spine—pace accordingly. Advantour and other operators commonly budget roughly ~1.5 hours for a 14→20→14 style loop, noting steeper steps and big views.
This is our default recommendation for a Mutianyu “hiking tour” product.
Route 3: east route with toboggan (Tower 6 focus)
Best for: families with older children, younger travelers, guests who want the toboggan descent.
Route: shuttle → chairlift to 6 → walk toward 4 or 1 → return 6 → toboggan down.
On-wall time: about 1–1.5 hours • Site time: about 2.5–3.5 hours • Difficulty:easy to moderate.
Important: the toboggan is weather-sensitive and may close in rain, snow, or unsafe track conditions. It is usually not the best default for seniors, bad weather, or tight layovers.
Route 4: extended official traverse (Tower 14 → Tower 6)
Best for: active travelers, photographers, guests who considered Jiankou but need a safer legal substitute.
Route:cable car to 14 → walk east through 13→7 → reach 6 → descend by chairlift or toboggan.
On-wall time: about 2.5–3.5 hours • Site time: about 4–5 hours • Difficulty:moderate.
Mutianyu’s official guidance notes that—if fitness allows—visitors can ascend on the west cable car and return by hiking toward No.6 before using the slide (toboggan) down.
Ticket warning: this pattern uses two separate ride systems (west cable car up vs east chairlift/toboggan down). Do not buy the wrong round-trip west cable car ticket if you plan a toboggan finish.
Which hiking route should you choose?
First-time visitor:14 → 18/20 → 14.
Family with young children:14 → 15/16 → 14.
Family with older children:6 route + toboggan (weather permitting).
Senior traveler:14 → 15/16 → 14 (active seniors only for longer routes).
Photographer:14→20 or 14→6 (time and crowds permitting).
Active hiker:14→6 (ticket + weather check).

Guest asking for Jiankou: steer to [Jinshanling hiking tour](/tours/beijing/great-wall/jinshanling-hiking-tour) or this official extended Mutianyu route.

Physical challenge → Mutianyu 14→6 or Jinshanling.
Fewer crowds → Jinshanling or early Mutianyu start.
Ridge-line scenery → 14→20 or Jinshanling.
Legal safer route → official Mutianyu hiking (this page).
Family-safe active route → 14→18 (or 14→15/16 for youngest kids).
