HSK Speaking Preparation
HSK speaking preparation is practice for HSKK, the spoken exam, which is not included automatically when you sit the written HSK. A short course can teach the question types and expose a tone problem. It cannot install fluency you do not already have. This page uses GoEast’s published hour suggestions and says plainly where a drill ends.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not register HSKK and does not run mock interviews. Confirm the spoken level and the date at a test center. GoEast’s hour numbers are their suggestions, and their written-exam page already conflicts with itself on other totals.
At a Glance
| Exam | HSKK, in primary, intermediate, and advanced bands on GoEast’s HSK page. |
|---|---|
| Suggested hours | Primary 5, intermediate 15, advanced 15. A separate line says 15 hours for the speaking test as a whole. Ask which product is which. |
| Class unit | GoEast says one adult class hour is 50 minutes on that FAQ. |
| Price context | The same page starts HSK prep from USD 175. That may cover written or spoken products. Confirm the line. |
| Format | Private or group, Shanghai or online, “inquire for dates.” No public roster. |
| What five hours can do | Learn the parts of the test and record a baseline. Not rebuild your tones from zero. |
| What builds speech | Weekly speaking over months: intensives, private lessons, or a stay where you must talk. See the pronunciation page. |
| Written HSK | A different paper. Universities sometimes ask for both. Budget both. |
| DragonTrail | No speaking-test seat and no score prediction. |
HSKK Is Its Own Exam
People hear “HSK” and buy a written course, then discover the speaking result is a second registration called HSKK. GoEast’s preparation page lists it beside the written levels: primary, intermediate, and advanced, with suggested lessons of 5, 15, and 15 hours. Another sentence on the page says 15 hours for the HSK speaking test as a single block. Those can be reconciled only by asking whether primary is the 5-hour product and the other bands are 15, or whether someone pasted two generations of the page together. The written levels on the same URL already disagree by five to ten hours. Treat the spoken numbers with the same caution.
CLI’s FAQ is useful here even though it is not an HSKK brochure. They say HSK mainly tests written and listening ability and does not capture conversational ease. A strong written score and a weak spoken score are a normal pair. If your target institution wants the spoken result, the written prep will not produce it by osmosis.
What a Short Speaking Drill Can Change
Five to fifteen 50-minute hours can teach you the shape of the test: how long you speak, what a picture prompt looks like, how a listen-and-repeat item works, and how you behave when you blank. GoEast describes assessment of strong and weak areas, question types, and mock tests reviewed with a teacher. That is the right use of a short product. Record every mock. The recording is the homework. A teacher’s encouragement without a recording will not let you hear the tone you think you produced.
The same hours cannot repair a beginner ear. Tones, initials, and finals need the kind of repetition described on the pronunciation page, over many weeks. CLI builds four hours a day partly so speaking is not a Friday extra. That’s Mandarin’s intensive month is twenty classes aimed at listening and speaking. Those are the products that grow the skill. HSKK prep harvests it and teaches you the basket.
Choosing Primary, Intermediate, or Advanced
Choose the band your listener asked for, not the band that flatters you. Primary HSKK is a small format. Sitting it when you were asked for intermediate wastes the fee. Sitting advanced when you cannot narrate a simple sequence wastes it faster. GoEast says they test reading, listening, speaking, and handwriting where the written exam requires it, and that speaking prep includes live video lessons for pronunciation. Ask for a sample prompt from the band you think you want, and do it cold. Your cold recording is a better placement than your best day in class.
If no one has asked for a band, you may not need the exam at all. A school completion certificate and a recording you can send to an employer are sometimes the real tools. LTL will issue a course certificate. That is not HSKK. Do not pay for a test date because a course “includes speaking.”
How to Practice Between the Lessons
The hours are too few to carry the skill by themselves. GoEast’s general method — video first, live speaking, feedback, portal review — is the right skeleton if they apply it to HSKK and not only to their long course. Between lessons, speak to a timer. Describe a photo for the number of seconds the prompt allows. Stop the English. That’s Mandarin’s language corners and LTL’s in-city errands are extra reps if you are already in China. They are not a substitute for hearing yourself against the prompt type.
A partner who is also cramming can make you faster or can fossilize a shared mistake. One recorded session with a teacher who will stop you is worth three friendly exchanges that never correct a tone. If you are buying only five hours, spend them on correction and format, and do the volume alone.
Dates, Cities, and Online Limits
GoEast says courses start all the time and that you should inquire, and it names Shanghai campuses plus an online option. “All the time” is not a calendar. The test itself happens at a center, on a date, with a headset and a room you should visit in your mind before you arrive late. Online lessons can prepare you from anywhere. They cannot sit the exam. chinesetest.cn is where you confirm a center exists. Our fetch of the homepage did not list the HSKK calendar, so this page will not invent test cities.
If you are in China on a short language holiday, you may not be in the country on the speaking-test date. Do not buy a five-hour drill during a two-week trip unless the test is in those two weeks or you will continue online after you leave. CLI’s online hours, which do not expire, are one way people keep speaking practice alive after an immersion. That policy is CLI’s. Ask any other school whether unused HSKK hours vanish at the end of the month.
A Clean Plan
Decide whether anyone needs the HSKK result. If yes, confirm band, date, and center. Record a cold sample. Buy the short drill for format and the long speaking work for the actual skill, as two products if necessary. If no one needs the result, spend the money on ordinary speaking lessons and keep the recordings for yourself.
DragonTrail will not book the test. Request Guidance if you are unsure whether you are close enough for a 5- or 15-hour drill. The pronunciation page is the better read if the cold recording shows the tones are not ready. The exam day is the center’s.
Treat the Speaking Paper as Its Own Booking
GoEast’s HSK page is the only source in this batch that names speaking-test hours. It lists HSKK primary at 5 hours, intermediate at 15, and advanced at 15, and it also has a line that says 15 hours for HSK speaking. Those figures do not match each other, and the page’s last major update note points at August 2023. Use them as a prompt to ask, not as a syllabus. The same page says new HSK levels 6–9 are on demand. chinesetest.cn, opened the same day, did not publish a speaking calendar or a word list. Do not invent a 2026 HSKK date from a school’s marketing sentence.
A general speaking class is not an HSKK rehearsal. That’s Mandarin’s intensive product emphasizes speaking over reading and writing, and that is still a language course, not a scored mock. CLI splits listening and speaking onto one of three teachers inside a twenty-hour one-to-one week, which is useful practice and still not a test registration. Ask the school whether the hour you pay is a mock with a score, a pronunciation drill, or ordinary conversation. Ask whether the teacher has seen the current speaking prompt style. Ask which city the test center is in, because a class in Guilin does not walk you into a Beijing exam room.
If you only have a short stay, put the speaking paper after you can already hold a conversation, not before. GoEast says HSK 3 preparation is not a beginner course. The same logic applies to the speaking paper: five or fifteen hours of coaching cannot install tones you have never practiced. Pair this page with the speaking-and-pronunciation route if the gap is tones, and with the HSK preparation route if the gap is the written paper. DragonTrail does not register you for 汉语水平口语考试 and does not sell a speaking-test seat.

FAQ
If I pass written HSK, do I pass speaking?
No. HSKK is separate. GoEast lists it as its own rows with its own hours. A university that wants both will say both. Ask the admissions notice, not the language school.
Is five hours enough for primary HSKK?
Five hours is GoEast’s suggestion for the primary band, in 50-minute class hours on their FAQ. It is enough to learn a small format if you already speak at that level. It is not enough to become a speaker. If the cold recording is mostly English or broken tones, buy a longer speaking course first.
Why does the page list both 5 hours and 15 hours?
Because it lists three bands and also a single “speaking test” line of 15 hours. That is ambiguous. Ask whether your band is the 5-hour primary product or a 15-hour intermediate or advanced product before you pay.
Can I prepare for HSKK inside an intensive group?
The intensive group can build speaking, especially That’s Mandarin’s, which says speaking is the emphasis. It will not automatically rehearse HSKK prompts. Add at least a few mock sessions in the weeks before the test.
Are online speaking mocks valid?
They are valid practice. GoEast sells live video lessons for that. They are not the exam. You still sit HSKK at a center under their rules. A good mock uses a timer and a recording, not a relaxed conversation.
Will a teacher predict my HSKK score?
They might guess. Treat the guess as encouragement. DragonTrail will not publish a pass rate, and you should not trust one printed as a promise. Your timed recordings are the evidence.
I need both papers. What do I buy first?
The language, then the drills. If you are close on both, buy the weak paper’s drill first. GoEast’s written suggestions run into the tens of hours and the spoken ones are shorter. Shorter does not mean easier. It means the format is smaller than the skill.
Can DragonTrail find an HSKK test date for me?
No. Use chinesetest.cn and the center. We can help you decide whether a short drill is premature. We do not see their seat map.
