Intermediate Chinese Courses

Intermediate Mandarin is the long middle: you can survive daily life and you cannot yet do your real work, read the news, or trust yourself on the phone. Courses at this level should close specific gaps — grammar you avoid, characters you skip, tones that collapse when you are tired — instead of restarting “hello” in a prettier city. This page is about that middle, using level maps schools published on 29 October 2026.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail does not certify you as intermediate and does not place you in a class. Bring a recent HSK score if you have one, and still expect the school to test you. Scores and classroom levels drift apart.

A working definitionYou handle daily situations and you struggle when the topic leaves the textbook. Often discussed near HSK 3–4, not owned by those labels. Schools may call this 中级.
GoEast bandsElementary levels 4–6: HSK 3.0 Band 2, CEFR A2, 721 words. Intermediate levels 7–10: Bands 3–4, CEFR B1, 1,140 words.
That’s MandarinTheir intensive FAQ says six months of monthly levels lands near HSK 3. That is one school’s forecast for a twenty-class week.
CLI contrastTheir FAQ says many students pass HSK 3 in 3–4 months and HSK 5 in 8–12 months on twenty one-to-one hours. Different hours, different clock.
Group riskIntermediate groups are easier to fill than advanced groups and harder than beginner groups. Ask anyway.
Skill splitMany intermediate learners speak ahead of their reading, or the reverse. The course should name the weak side.
Exam optionHSK 3 or 4 prep is a separate product at GoEast and on That’s Mandarin’s price list. General class is not automatically exam class.
CharactersThis is when simplified reading has to become a habit. Conversation-only intensives will not do that job alone.

The Plateau Is a Syllabus Problem

Intermediate learners often buy another city instead of another method. The symptoms are familiar. You understand the teacher and miss the landlord. You know a grammar point in a drill and avoid it in speech. You read a text with a dictionary and cannot say the same thing. A useful course names one of those and spends the month on it. That’s Mandarin’s intensive product is explicit that listening and speaking lead, and that reading and writing are not the center. If your plateau is characters, that product is the wrong center. Add the reading page’s kind of work, or say you want the textbook to be hard on the page.

GoEast’s map is one of the clearer public ladders. After a beginning stage of 630 words, their elementary stage lists 721 more words and 72 grammar points, aligned to what they call HSK 3.0 Band 2 and CEFR A2. The next stage, levels 7–10, lists 1,140 words and 100 grammar points, Bands 3–4, CEFR B1. Those counts are GoEast’s course design, fetched 29 October 2026, not an official word list from chinesetest.cn. The exam site’s homepage did not give us the syllabus. Use the school’s counts to see the size of the middle, then check the current official outline before you register a test.

Do Not Average Two Schools’ Clocks

That’s Mandarin says that six months of intensive levels, one level a month, reaches approximately HSK 3. CLI says many of its students pass HSK 3 in three to four months and HSK 5 in eight to twelve months, on four one-to-one hours a day, and that HSK 6 is often two years or more. A reader who splits the difference and plans “HSK 4 in five months” has invented a third school. Your clock depends on weekly minutes, whether the hour is yours alone, and whether you are actually intermediate or still finishing beginner grammar.

Bring evidence. A two-year-old HSK 3 score and a year of no practice is not intermediate today. A year of weekly tutoring might be. GoEast says it places you in a trial. CLI builds the first lessons from a questionnaire about your Chinese story. That’s Mandarin runs levels you can ask to see. Sit the test. Do not negotiate the level upward to protect your pride. The expensive mistake at this stage is a class that reviews HSK 2.

Group, Private, or a Mix

At intermediate level a group still usually exists in the big campuses, because this is where a lot of learners sit. That’s Mandarin caps intensive groups at six. LTL’s Beijing groups average three and cap at six, from USD 387 a week. You get argument, humor, and someone else to make the mistakes. You also get their topics. If your gap is professional — a procurement call, a clinic intake, a meeting — the group will not stay there. Buy the group for the shared level and a private hour for the job. GoEast already splits the catalog that way: groups through intermediate, private for business, spoken, and higher HSK bands.

A pure private month is justified when your speaking and reading are far apart. CLI’s three-teacher day is built for that split: one teacher for reading and writing, one for listening and speaking, one for review. You do not have to buy their whole Guilin package to copy the idea. Ask a city school for two teachers, or for two lesson types, instead of one general hour that always slides back to chat.

HSK 3 and HSK 4 as Tools, Not Identities

An HSK score is useful when a university or an employer asked for a number. It is a poor identity. GoEast’s HSK page suggests 25 lesson hours for HSK 3 and for HSK 4 in one table, then later text says 25 hours for HSK 3 and 4, 35 for HSK 5, and 45 for HSK 6, while the first table says 30 and 40 for HSK 5 and 6. The page disagrees with itself. That’s Mandarin’s prices page lists HSK group and private prep from 110 and 192 RMB a class for HSK 1–6, under a 2020 heading, in Beijing and Shanghai. Use either product as exam drill after you are close to the level, not as a substitute for the missing year of reading.

GoEast also says exam prep is a poor first course if you lack the foundation, and gives HSK 3 prep as an example of a course for people who already have HSK 3’s basics. That warning is the most useful sentence on the page. Intermediate learners love exam courses because the finish line is visible. The finish line does not install the language the paper assumes.

Use the City at This Level

Intermediate is when the city starts to pay you back. You can book the train, argue mildly about a dish, and follow a slow colleague. You still miss jokes and numbers. LTL’s out-of-class upgrade for one-to-one students is aimed at exactly those errands. In a group intensive, That’s Mandarin lists language corners, cultural workshops, and weekend activities as extras, not as the twenty classes. Go to the ones that force speech. A calligraphy afternoon is pleasant and will not fix your phone calls.

Choose the city for the life outside class, not for a mythical “pure” accent. LTL’s index contrasts big cities with Chengde and with coastal Beihai, and it prints discount tags that are theirs. CLI argues for Guilin because daily life stays in Chinese. If your intermediate goal is office Mandarin, a bigger city’s workplaces are the raw material, and you will also hear more English. Say which raw material you need.

A Month Worth Buying

Write a gap list of five things you cannot do: take a phone message, read a lease, tell a case study, write a short email, follow a meeting. Ask the school which of the five the month will touch, in which textbook, for how many minutes a week. If the answer is “our intermediate book, you’ll be fine,” ask for the chapter titles. You are past the stage where any exposure is good exposure.

DragonTrail will not score you and will not predict your HSK date. Send the gap list with Request Guidance if you want help choosing between a group month and a private month. The intermediate course starts when the school’s placement agrees with the gap you named.

FAQ

Is HSK 3 the same as intermediate?

Schools talk that way and then disagree with each other. That’s Mandarin’s six-month intensive forecast points at about HSK 3. GoEast puts a large elementary stage and then an intermediate stage of four levels beside later HSK bands. CLI treats HSK as a written and listening test that does not capture spoken ease. Use the score if someone demanded it. Use the gap list for the course.

I can talk but I cannot read. Which course?

Not a conversation-only intensive, or not that alone. That’s Mandarin says its intensive group favors listening and speaking. You need a reading and writing stream. CLI splits teachers that way inside one program. Ask for characters and texts in the weekly plan, and read the reading-and-writing page before you accept “you’ll pick it up.”

Will a month in China fix a plateau I built at home?

A month will dent it if the course aims at the dent. It will not replace a year of avoidance. GoEast’s level sizes — hundreds of words per stage — are a hint about volume. Combine the month with a before-and-after online plan so the dent does not close back up on the flight home.

Are intermediate groups full of beginners who self-promoted?

Sometimes, which is why you ask about the placement test and, if you can, sit in. That’s Mandarin’s level system and GoEast’s trial exist to prevent that. They work when the school enforces them. If you discover on day two that the room is reviewing pinyin, ask to move. Do not wait for a certificate of endurance.

Should I switch to private lessons at this level?

Switch the hours that are about your gap, not necessarily the whole week. A group is still good value when LTL’s published week is USD 387 against USD 774, if the other students are truly near you. A private hour for your weak skill is the usual mix. Full private, CLI-style, is for people who want every minute assigned.

Can I prepare for HSK 4 inside a general intermediate class?

Only the overlap. Exam courses teach question types and timing. GoEast sells that separately and warns that prep is not a foundation course. That’s Mandarin lists HSK group prep as its own line. If the test date is soon, buy the prep. If the test date is a wish, build the reading first.

Do universities and private schools mean the same thing by intermediate?

No. A university language year may use a different textbook series and a larger class. A private school’s “level 5” is that school’s level 5. Ask both for a sample lesson or a chapter list. The university page on this cluster covers the institutional version.

Will DragonTrail tell me I am intermediate?

No. We will not issue a level. If you write what you can and cannot do, we can help you see which published course shape matches that description. The school still tests you.
