HSK Preparation Courses

An HSK preparation course teaches you how a specific exam asks questions. It does not replace the months or years of Mandarin the score assumes, and it is not the same document as a school’s own certificate. Chinese Testing International runs the test. Schools sell the drill. This page separates those roles with what we could actually read on 29 October 2026.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail does not register you for HSK and does not hold prep-course seats. The official homepage we opened did not include a syllabus. Confirm dates and the current outline on chinesetest.cn and at a test center.

What the Exam Is, and Who Runs It

HSK, 汉语水平考试, is a standardized proficiency test. The operator’s site is chinesetest.cn. On 29 October 2026 the homepage we retrieved presented the testing service, a large network of centers, the email kaoshi@chinesetest.cn, and phone numbers for English and Chinese support. It did not hand over the level-by-level syllabus, the vocabulary lists, or a registration calendar. Anything precise about word counts on a school page is that school’s account until you download the current outline from the operator or a test center. CLI’s FAQ, for example, says the Ministry’s system presents nine levels, lists character counts for HSK 1 through 6 (150, 300, 600, 1,200, 2,500, and 5,000), and says the exam was revamped in March 2022. Those figures are CLI’s explanation. Check them against the current official list before you memorize a number.

You register for the exam yourself, or a school helps with the paperwork as a service. That’s Mandarin’s prices page says HSK prep includes help with registration. Help is not the same thing as a seat they control. Test dates fill, and a course that ends after the test date is a calendar error. Work backward from a published test date, not from a hope.

Preparation Is a Drill, Not a Foundation

GoEast’s own warning is the one to keep: exam preparation is a poor fit if you do not already have the foundation, and their HSK 3 prep assumes you already learned the HSK 3 material. They suggest starting one or two months before the exam, learning question styles, and doing mock tests. That is a sensible shape for someone who is close. It is an expensive way to discover you cannot read the questions. Their general ladder — ten levels aligned to HSK 3.0 bands — is the long course. The prep hours are the short one.

The hour suggestions conflict, so quote them as a range with the conflict visible. The table says HSK 3 and 4 need 25 hours, HSK 5 needs 30, HSK 6 needs 40. Later text says 25 for HSK 3 and 4, 35 for HSK 5, and 45 for HSK 6, and also “15h for HSK Speaking Test, 25h for HSK 3 and 4, 35 for HSK 5, and 45 for HSK 6.” Buy nothing until the school picks one number and defines the 50-minute hour they mention in the FAQ. Twenty-five 50-minute hours are about twenty-one clock hours. Write the invoice in minutes.

Where You Can Take the Drill

GoEast sells the prep at its Shanghai campuses and online, from USD 175, in private lessons or groups. The FAQ says to contact them to confirm a group. That is an honest “ask,” not a published roster. That’s Mandarin lists HSK group and private prep in Beijing and Shanghai on the prices page, from 110 and 192 RMB a class, under the 2020 heading. Their intensive FAQ says the regular intensive curriculum is aligned to HSK and that they support students who want the official certificate. Alignment is not a mock-test course. If you are in an intensive month for general progress, add explicit mocks if the test is soon.

CLI will talk about HSK as a goal inside a long immersion and is frank that the test misses spoken fluidity. Their students’ timelines — HSK 3 in several months of full days, HSK 6 in two or more years — describe learning, not a 40-hour drill. You can be in Guilin for the language and still sit the exam in a city that has a center. Ask who drives you to the test and whether that morning is deducted from class hours.

What a Score Is Used For

Universities and some employers ask for a number. A language school’s completion certificate, which LTL says will name your program and level and which That’s Mandarin says it issues for performance, will not satisfy that request. Conversely, an HSK score will not prove you attended anyone’s campus. If a university’s admissions notice names a level and a date, that notice wins. Do not let a prep school translate “about HSK 4” into “the university will accept you.” Admissions are the university’s.

GoEast mentions a student story about a scholarship after an HSK 5 pass. That is their page’s anecdote, not a rule, and DragonTrail is not republishing it as evidence you will be funded. Scholarships have their own rules and their own deadlines. A score is one line in an application.

Do Not Forget the Spoken Paper

HSKK is the spoken exam, with primary, intermediate, and advanced bands on GoEast’s table at 5, 15, and 15 suggested hours. People prepare the written HSK and discover the speaking test is a separate registration. If your goal is a university that asks for both, budget both. The speaking-preparation page on this cluster goes into what those hours can and cannot drill. Pronunciation habits older than a month will not move in five hours. Five hours can teach you the format.

A conversation-heavy intensive, such as That’s Mandarin’s morning group, may help the spoken test more than it helps the reading paper. A character-heavy university class may do the reverse. Look at your last practice scores by section. Buy the drill for the weak section. A general “HSK course” that spends equal time on your strongest skill is a comfort, not a plan.

A Sensible Order

Confirm the test exists on the dates you can sit it, at a center you can reach, for the level your target institution named. Then get a diagnostic that is a real past paper or a close mock, not a vibe. Then buy only the hours aimed at the weak section, using the school’s hour suggestion as a ceiling to question, not a package to swallow whole. Stop the drill when the mocks stabilize. More hours after that are language study, and they should be sold as language study.

DragonTrail will not register the exam and will not guess your score. Request Guidance if you want help deciding whether you are close enough for a drill or whether you still need a term of general study. Find a Suitable Program if the HSK target is really a university application in disguise. The test day is the test center’s, not ours.

Build the Exam Plan From Minutes, Not From a Level Name

GoEast’s HSK page, fetched 29 October 2026, lists one adult class hour as 50 minutes and then disagrees with itself about how many of those hours a level needs. A table on the page says HSK 3 is 25 hours, HSK 4 is 25, HSK 5 is 30, and HSK 6 is 40. Later sentences on the same page say HSK 5 is 35 hours and HSK 6 is 45. That’s Mandarin’s prices page, whose heading still says 2020, lists HSK group classes from 110 RMB and HSK private classes from 192 RMB in Beijing and Shanghai, for HSK 1–6. The intensive page says the curriculum is aligned to HSK and is not the same product as a mock-test course. If you buy “HSK” without asking which of those products the invoice names, you may pay for general class and still need a separate mock-test block.

Chinese Testing International’s homepage at chinesetest.cn identified the operator, an email, and phone numbers. It did not include a syllabus, a word list, or a test calendar in the page we opened. Register the exam with a center. A school’s level certificate is a different piece of paper. CLI’s FAQ attributes character counts and pass timelines to its own students on twenty one-to-one hours a week — HSK 3 in three to four months, HSK 5 in eight to twelve months — and those clocks are not a DragonTrail schedule. Write the hours you will actually sit, the minutes inside each hour, and the date the test center gives you. Then decide whether the remaining weeks are enough, or whether you should sit a later paper.

FAQ

Can I register for HSK through DragonTrail?

No. Registration belongs to Chinese Testing International and the test center. A school may help you with the form. We do not hold seats and we do not collect the exam fee.

Which hour total should I trust on GoEast’s page?

Neither, until they confirm one. On 29 October 2026 the page showed 30 and 35 hours for HSK 5, and 40 and 45 for HSK 6, in different blocks. Ask for the plan that matches the invoice, in 50-minute hours if that is still their unit.

Is a school certificate the same as HSK?

No. LTL’s graduation certificate and That’s Mandarin’s level certificate document their course. HSK is an external exam. Universities that name HSK will not accept a substitute unless their own notice says so.

How early should I start a prep course?

GoEast suggests one or two months before the exam, after you already know the level’s material. Starting six months out with only exam tricks, and no general study, leaves you able to recognize question types you still cannot read.

Does the intensive course include HSK prep?

That’s Mandarin says the intensive curriculum aligns with HSK and that they support students who want the official test. Alignment means the levels point the same direction. It does not mean every morning is a mock paper. Add mocks if you have a date.

Are HSK 7, 8, and 9 open for registration?

GoEast says preparation for new HSK 6–9 is on demand. We could not confirm schedules from the chinesetest.cn homepage we fetched. Check the operator and a test center before you pay for a level name.

Will a prep course raise my score if my Chinese is far below the level?

Unlikely, and GoEast says so in its own way: do the foundation course first. CLI’s timelines for reaching HSK 5 or 6 are months and years of full study, not a 40-hour drill. Buy the drill when practice papers show you are close.

Can I prepare online?

Yes. GoEast sells the prep online and in Shanghai. That’s Mandarin sells online private lessons from 168 RMB a class on the prices page, and a separate HSK private line. Online prep does not require a visa. It also does not put you in a test room. You still travel to a center on the day.
