Chinese Speaking and Pronunciation

Chinese speaking and pronunciation work is corrected talk: tones, initials, finals, and the habit of finishing a sentence out loud. Apps and word lists do not listen to you. A teacher with a recording does. This page explains how much speaking time the schools we read actually put in a week, and why a five-hour exam drill is not a pronunciation course.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

DragonTrail has no speaking lab and no accent guarantee. Progress follows minutes of correction. Anyone who promises a new voice in a weekend is selling a holiday, not a method.

Tones Are the Course

Mandarin distinguishes words by pitch pattern. A beginner who collects characters and guesses the tone will be misunderstood in ways that feel like “Chinese people are impatient.” They often heard a different word. CLI starts beginners with pronunciation, tones, and a pinyin chart for that reason. Any school that postpones tones until “later” is postponing the language. Ask for the first week’s plan. If tones are absent, choose a different plan.

Intermediate and heritage speakers have a different tone problem: the tone collapses when the sentence gets long. A drill of single syllables will not catch it. You need sentences, recorded, played back, and stopped. GoEast’s live hour is built for that if the teacher actually stops you. A group of six will stop you less often than a private hour. Pay for the private hour if pronunciation is the reason you came. Use the group, if you want one, for something else.

Count Spoken Minutes, Not Class Minutes

A four-hour morning is not four hours of your voice. In a group of six, even a lively teacher may give you a few minutes of extended talk. That’s Mandarin caps the intensive room at six and says speaking is the aim. The aim is not a measurement of your minutes. Ask how long each student speaks. GoEast’s claim that people speak most of a two-person class is more believable because the room is small; they cap online groups at four and say the average is two. CLI’s one-to-one hour is entirely yours, which is why their week moves speaking faster and costs more.

Homework speaking counts. Read a paragraph aloud. Describe your afternoon for sixty seconds. Send the file if the teacher will listen. If they will not listen to audio, you are paying for classroom time only. Say that expectation in the first week.

The City Corrects You Only if Someone Does

Ordering food is practice. It is not correction. The vendor wants the transaction finished, not your tone fixed. LTL’s Safari upgrade exists because a teacher beside you on the errand is a different activity from a student surviving it. They sell it only with one-to-one lessons. A group outing with a guide is the culture page’s warning: English explanations do not train your mouth. Choose one or two errands a day and try them in Chinese. Then take the failure back to class. That loop is the method. A dozen errands without a teacher is exposure, and exposure without correction fossilizes the error.

Cities differ in how quickly someone switches to English. Schools say this about Shanghai in particular. If your goal is speaking, a switch to English is the enemy, even when it is kind. A smaller city can help. It can also mean you understand less of a local accent. Both are fine if you expected them.

Do Not Confuse a Test with a Voice

HSKK preparation teaches you to manage a prompt and a timer. GoEast’s suggested hours are short. The speaking-exam page keeps those numbers and their ambiguity. If your recordings are unclear, do the pronunciation work first and the exam format later. People pass speaking tests with awkward tones and fail conversations with kind strangers. Decide which failure you care about.

Written HSK will not fix speech. CLI is explicit that the written exam misses conversational ease. A high score and a muddy voice are compatible. Buy the paper you need for an application, and buy the voice separately.

Tools That Help a Teacher, Not Replace One

Pinyin is a tool for seeing a sound. It is not a pronunciation. Shadowing a recording helps if you then get corrected, and wastes time if you shadow your own mistake for a month. GoEast’s sequence — video, live talk, feedback, portal — is the right order when the live part includes interruption. That’s Mandarin’s digital notes help review. They do not hear you. A tandem partner helps volume and rarely hears tones. Use the partner for courage and the teacher for the sound.

If you are not in China, online private lessons are enough to start. GoEast sells them from USD 29 a class hour and CLI’s online hours do not expire on their FAQ. You do not need a visa to fix a tone. You need a microphone and a teacher who replays it.

A Simple Speaking Plan

Record one minute today. Book a teacher who will mark that minute. Choose a weekly spoken-minute target you can keep, in a small room or a private hour. Add city errands only after you can survive them, and bring the errors back. Leave exam format until the sound is stable enough that a stranger gets the word.

Request Guidance if you are choosing between a group intensive that talks about speaking and a private hour that costs more. We will not listen to the recording as your school. We can help you see which product actually contains correction. There is no accent certificate at the end.

Buy Minutes of Spoken Correction, Then Check the Unit

Speaking improves when someone stops you. A group of six cannot stop you often. LTL’s Beijing one-to-one starts at USD 774 a week against USD 387 for the group, and the Safari add-on is sold only on top of one-to-one. That’s Mandarin’s intensive product says speaking leads and reading lags, in classes of about four or five. That is a lot of oral time and still a shared room. GoEast says class flow is about 70 percent speaking, and its online groups are two to four people in 75-minute sessions. CLI assigns listening and speaking to one of three teachers inside twenty weekly one-to-one hours. Pick the room that matches how much interruption you need. If tones collapse only when you are tired, a private hour in the afternoon may teach more than another beginner drill in the morning.

Name the unit. GoEast’s HSK page says one adult class hour is 50 minutes, while the online group product is 75 minutes. That’s Mandarin sells classes, four of them in a morning on the intensive page. LTL’s semester line is four hours Monday to Friday. Ask whether pronunciation is a scored slice of that time or a hope that conversation will fix your third tone. Record yourself once a week on the same forty-second prompt so you can hear the change. The teacher’s praise is not a measurement.

HSKK coaching is a narrower product and lives on the speaking-exam page. Pronunciation work is slower than people budget: one clean tone in a drill is not the same tone in a noisy restaurant or on a phone call you cannot pause and cannot replay for the teacher. Budget several weeks of the same short drill before you judge the teacher or switch schools. Do not assume a conversation class registers you for 汉语水平口语考试. chinesetest.cn did not give us a speaking calendar on the fetch. Online lessons from GoEast or CLI can continue the same prompt after you leave China. They do not replace the weeks you spent hearing the city. DragonTrail does not employ a pronunciation coach and does not sell a tone package.

FAQ

Can I fix tones in a month?

You can hear them and produce them in careful speech if you work every day with correction. You will still lose them when you are tired. That’s a normal month, not a failed one. A weekend course cannot do this.

Is a group enough for pronunciation?

A group of two, as GoEast describes its average, can be enough. A group of six gives you less time. If pronunciation is the main goal, add private minutes. The intensive group’s speaking emphasis is real and still shared.

Will living in China fix my accent by itself?

No. People will complete your transaction and leave the tone alone. Correction has to be someone’s job. A teacher, or a patient host who was asked to correct you, is that someone. A month of uncorrected errands will practice the mistake.

I already speak a Chinese dialect. Will that help?

It helps your ear for some sounds and it interferes with others. Tell the teacher. Heritage pronunciation is not standard Mandarin by default. The heritage page is the wider placement question.

Does HSKK measure pronunciation?

It measures a spoken performance under exam rules, which includes whether you can be understood. It is short. GoEast’s hour suggestions are a drill, not a voice course. Prepare the voice first if recordings are muddy.

Are online lessons worse for tones?

A good microphone and a teacher who replays audio are enough. A noisy café call is not. GoEast and CLI both sell online speaking time. The room matters less than whether someone stops you.

How many minutes should I speak each day?

Enough that you are tired of your own voice for a few minutes, every day, plus class. A one-minute recording is the floor for tracking, not the whole practice. Class minutes in a big group do not replace it.

Can DragonTrail evaluate my recording?

No. Send it to a teacher you are paying to teach. We can help you choose a format where feedback is the product, not an extra.
