Private Chinese Lessons
Private Chinese lessons are one teacher and one student, so the timetable can follow your level instead of a group that may not exist. You pay for that empty chair. This page gathers the one-to-one prices and weekly shapes schools published on 29 October 2026, and the questions to ask before you treat a weekly “from” price as a bill.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not employ these teachers and does not sell lesson packs. A from-price is the school’s lowest published figure, not a quote for your city, hour, or textbook.

When a Private Lesson Is the Honest Format
A group is cheaper per hour and worse when you are the only advanced student in the city that month. Private lessons exist for that mismatch, and for people whose week is not a blank Monday-to-Friday morning. GoEast’s online private product says the content can be general, business, HSK prep, spoken, or advanced, at any level from beginner through what they call HSK 6 and above. That’s Mandarin’s prices page says private lessons are flexible, intensive or part-time, with tailor-made content. The trade is money and loneliness: you will not meet a class, and you will not hide in the back row.
CLI builds the whole immersion around one-to-one teaching: four hours a day, twenty hours a week, three teachers who split reading and writing, listening and speaking, and a review of grammar and vocabulary. Sessions on their FAQ are 8:20–10:20, 10:30–12:30, 14:00–16:00, and 16:10–18:10, and you take two of them. That is private study with a school day wrapped around it, not a single evening tutorial. Do not compare CLI’s weekly total with one GoEast hour and call them the same product.
How the Published Prices Are Built
LTL sells Beijing one-to-one as a week: from USD 774, against a group week from USD 387. The page does not, in the text we read, spell the number of hours inside that week. Ask. A week of ten hours and a week of twenty hours are both “a week.” That’s Mandarin prices by the class: private from 192 RMB on the page still headed 2020, online private from 168 RMB. Their intensive group on the newer page is from 104 RMB a class, so the private premium on that older page is large. GoEast prices online private time from USD 29 a class hour, with a materials fee of USD 99, and a monthly example of twelve hours from USD 369. CLI prices by length of stay because the room is inside the number: USD 2,870 for four weeks with a private room at their center, up to USD 26,870 for a year on the same FAQ table.
None of these is a ceiling or a floor DragonTrail will match. Peak-season teachers, a specialist medical or legal topic, and lessons that start at 7:00 so you can reach an office can all sit above the “from” price. Get the unit (week, class, or clock hour), the minutes inside the unit, and the expiry rule. CLI’s online FAQ says their online lesson hours do not expire, cannot be refunded, and can be transferred once or put toward an in-person immersion at the price you paid per hour. That expiry rule is generous and unusual. Do not assume another school’s pack works the same way.
The Teacher and the Curriculum
Schools publish hiring claims you should treat as claims. That’s Mandarin says it hires a small share of applicants, that teachers are native speakers with degrees and a TCSL or TCSOL certificate, and that they finish internal training. GoEast says teachers hold degrees in language education, average seven or more years, and complete two months of training before a first class. LTL says courses are taught by qualified native teachers and that books are included. DragonTrail has not audited those hiring rates. Ask who your teacher is for the first two weeks, and whether a substitute uses the same notes.
Curriculum quality in a private lesson is the plan, not the brand. Ask for the first ten lessons in writing: tones and pinyin if you are new, or a list of work texts if you are not. LTL’s Safari upgrade, which they say cannot be bought without a one-to-one course, takes the lesson into the city — a metro card, an order, a market. That is a useful shape for speaking. It is an upgrade with its own price, not a free walk.
Schedules, Cancellations, and Time Zones
Private time is easy to waste. CLI’s online rule, which we read on the FAQ, says you must cancel or move a lesson at least 24 hours ahead or the hour is consumed, and that a cancellation by the teacher is not consumed. GoEast lists timezone windows for groups and says private booking is flexible, including a free trial. A trial is a sample, not a placement you can quote in a visa letter. If you are still outside China, an online private block is a way to arrive with tones already started. Read the online page for that use. It does not, by itself, give you permission to stay.
Inside China, a private timetable can wrap around a job only if your visa already allows you to be there. Do not buy evening lessons and assume they justify a student visa. LTL will not process one. A school that does prepare student-visa papers will usually require a fuller weekly load than two tutorials. Ask what minimum hours their visa letter requires, and do not invent the number.
Housing Is Still Separate
Private lessons do not include a bed unless the program says so. CLI’s immersion price is the exception we could verify, because housing is inside those totals. LTL’s Beijing housing starts at USD 374 a week for an en suite room, USD 412 for homestay with meals, and USD 646 for a studio, on top of the course week. That’s Mandarin will look for housing only for its students, with homestay aimed at four weeks or more. A professional who wants ten private hours and a hotel for six nights should price the hotel as a hotel, not as “student housing.”
If two people travel together, a private apartment on That’s Mandarin’s page is described as a fit for one or two people, while a homestay is a private room in a family’s home. A second adult in a homestay is a question for that host, not an assumption. DragonTrail has no family room to assign.
What to Settle Before You Pay
Write back the offer in one paragraph: teacher or “a teacher from the team,” minutes per lesson, lessons per week, materials fee, cancellation window, what happens to unused hours, and whether any letter for a visa is included. If the letter is included, name the campus city. Then decide if a group would have been enough. Many beginners pay for private lessons because a brochure frightened them. A beginner group, when it exists, is often the better room.
DragonTrail can help you read two offers. We do not take the deposit. Find a Suitable Program keeps the wider study map. Request Guidance is the right button if you already have dates and a city and want a second pair of eyes. The lesson itself starts when that school puts a teacher on the calendar.

FAQ
Are private lessons always faster than a group?
They give you more minutes of your own voice. They are not magic. CLI’s one-to-one week is twenty hours. A single GoEast hour at USD 29 is one hour. Compare weekly minutes. A cheap private hour twice a week will move more slowly than a twenty-class group, and it should.
Why is LTL’s one-to-one week about twice the group week?
On the Beijing page the published floors are USD 774 and USD 387. You are buying the teacher’s whole hour and a seat that does not need other students. Confirm how many hours sit inside each weekly price before you decide the premium is worth it.
Can I use private lessons to prepare for HSK?
Yes, if the teacher agrees to the exam. That’s Mandarin’s prices page lists HSK private lessons from 192 RMB a class for HSK 1–6, on that 2020-headed page, in Beijing and Shanghai. GoEast’s HSK page starts at USD 175 and suggests lesson-hour totals that do not even agree with themselves. Read the HSK pages on this site before you buy a general conversation package and hope it is exam practice.
Do online private hours expire?
CLI says its online hours do not expire and cannot be refunded, with a one-time transfer. GoEast sells packs of 50 to 200 hours and a monthly plan. That’s Mandarin’s online line is “from 168 RMB a class” without an expiry rule on the page we read. Ask. Unused hours are where private products go to waste.
Is a free trial a place on the course?
No. GoEast offers a trial class on the online page. A trial lets you hear a teacher. It is not an acceptance letter, a housing booking, or a visa document.
Can two of us share a private lesson?
Then it is not private. Some schools will teach a pair, and the price may not match the one-to-one floor. That’s Mandarin’s small groups already exist for that wish. Ask for the pair price in writing rather than assuming half of USD 774.
Will DragonTrail match a from-price?
No. We do not publish a Mandarin rate card. The figures on this page are there so you can see the shape of the market on one date. Your price is whatever invoice the school sends for your hours and city.
What should I send when I request guidance?
Your approximate level, the city you can live in, the weeks you can stay, and whether you need a visa letter or you already have a residence status. Those four facts decide whether a private lesson is even the right product. A preferred textbook helps. A budget range helps. A demand for a named teacher we do not employ does not.
