If two quotes are for different ships, cabins or included excursions, comparing only the total price tells you very little.
Is Upstream More Expensive Than Downstream?
Not necessarily. The upstream Yichang → Chongqing cruise usually lasts 5 days / 4 nights compared with 4 days / 3 nights downstream, so it contains an extra night. However, cruise pricing also depends on departure demand, cabin inventory and promotions, so the upstream fare is not always simply 25% higher.

When Are Yangtze Cruises More Expensive?
Spring and autumn are popular because temperatures are generally more comfortable for shore excursions and deck viewing. Yangzi Explorer identifies mid-April through May, mid-July through mid-August, and September through October as peak periods on its current schedule.
Chinese holiday periods can also affect both fare and availability. National Day in early October is particularly important because domestic travel demand rises sharply.
A cheaper summer or late-season sailing can still be excellent if the dates fit your trip. Do not pay substantially more for a "peak" date unless the seasonal difference matters to you.
