Most classic Yangtze River cruises travel between Chongqing and Yichang through Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorges. Downstream cruises from Chongqing usually take 4 days / 3 nights, while upstream cruises from Yichang usually take 5 days / 4 nights.
The river route is broadly consistent, but the shore excursions are not. One ship may visit Fengdu and Goddess Stream, while another may use Fuling, White Emperor City, Lesser Three Gorges or a different Wushan-area excursion. Treat the itineraries below as a practical guide to the rhythm of the journey, then check the exact program for your ship and departure date.
The Route in One View
The journey follows the Yangtze east from Chongqing through the Three Gorges to Yichang, or west in the opposite direction. The main geographic sequence is:
Chongqing → Fengdu / Fuling area → Fengjie / Baidicheng area → Qutang Gorge → Wu Gorge / Wushan → Xiling Gorge → Three Gorges Dam area → Yichang
Not every ship stops at every place shown above. The route is the same, but shore excursions vary by operator and departure.

4-Day Yangtze Cruise: Chongqing to Yichang
The downstream cruise is the shorter and more common way to fit the Three Gorges into a China itinerary. You board in Chongqing, spend two full days moving through the middle Yangtze and finish near Yichang after the Three Gorges Dam section.

The exact order and excursion list depend on the ship. When comparing cruises, Day 2 and the Wushan excursion on Day 3 are often where the biggest itinerary differences appear.
Do not book an important onward flight or train based only on the words “Day 4.” Check the confirmed Yichang arrival point and end time first.

5-Day Yangtze Cruise: Yichang to Chongqing
The upstream cruise covers the same core Three Gorges route but usually adds one night. You begin around Yichang, travel west through the gorges and finish at Chongqing.

Upstream is not simply the downstream itinerary played backwards. The extra night changes the pace, and shore excursions, meals and gorge viewing times are scheduled differently.
Downstream or Upstream: Which Is Better?
Neither direction is automatically better. For most travelers, the right choice is the one that fits the rest of the China trip.

If both directions fit your dates equally well, we would usually choose based on the wider itinerary rather than trying to decide which direction has “better” scenery. Both travel through Qutang, Wu and Xiling Gorges.
For many first-time China itineraries, Beijing / Xi’an → Chongqing → Yangtze cruise → Yichang → Shanghai is a particularly natural downstream sequence.

This is why two cruises covering the same Chongqing–Yichang route can still feel different. Compare the actual included excursions rather than assuming every ship follows the same sightseeing program.
How Much Time Should You Allow Before and After?
The cruise itself may be 4 or 5 days, but it should not be treated as a perfectly self-contained block between two flights. Boarding ports, transfers and the final dam excursion add travel time at both ends.

How the Cruise Fits Into a China Itinerary
The Yangtze cruise works best when it also moves you naturally between two parts of your China trip. You do not need to return to the same city after the cruise.

If your trip is short, choose the direction that reduces backtracking. That matters more than small differences in the onboard schedule.
When Should You Be on Deck?
Qutang and Wu Gorges are the sections where it is most worth paying attention to the ship's announcements. Qutang is short, so it is easy to miss part of it if you are inside at the wrong time.
You do not need to spend the entire cruise standing on the top deck. A balcony cabin can be excellent for quieter viewing, while the open decks are better when you want the widest view of the cliffs and river bends.
Weather changes the mood of the Three Gorges considerably. Clear days reveal more mountain detail; mist and light rain can make the landscape more atmospheric.

Common Itinerary Mistakes
- Treating a sample itinerary as a guaranteed schedule. Excursions and timing can change by ship, season and river conditions.
- Choosing downstream or upstream only from the number of nights. Look at where you are coming from and where you are going next.
- Assuming every ship includes the same shore excursions. Compare Fengdu or alternative cultural stops, White Emperor City, the Wushan excursion and the dam program.
- Booking onward transport too tightly after the cruise. Confirm the final transfer point and scheduled end time first.
- Missing the gorge passages. Check the day's announcements so you know when Qutang and Wu Gorges are coming.
