Four open gates
The Temple of Heaven has four public entrances. East Gate (Tiantan Dongmen) is the modern main entrance with Line 5 subway access - the international-visitor default. North Gate gives the closest access to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (the icon) - useful if you want to see the icon first and walk south. West Gate is less used; chosen by visitors arriving from southwest Beijing. South Gate is the historical imperial processional entrance - this is where the emperor entered for the winter solstice ceremony, walking north up the axis - but it has poor subway access today. All four gates sell the same tickets.
- Drive time from Beijing: n/a
- Typical visit style: Reading: 4 min
- Difficulty: Easy - all four gates clearly marked
- Crowds: East busiest; South quietest
- Best for: Visitors deciding which gate to use; Travellers planning the entry route
- Less ideal for: Already on a guided tour - gate chosen for you
Four gates side by side
| Gate | Position | Transport | Crowd / use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| East Gate (Tiantan Dongmen) | East side | Line 5 subway 2-min walk | Busiest - default |
| North Gate | North side | Walking from northwest hotels; some buses | Second busiest; closest to Hall of Prayer |
| West Gate | West side | Bus / less used | Less crowded |
| South Gate | South side | Bus; poor subway | Quietest; historical imperial entrance |
East Gate (Tiantan Dongmen)
The modern main entrance with Line 5 subway access. Default for international visitors arriving by subway or taxi. Enter East Gate, walk west then south to pick up the south-to-north axis route, walk north past Circular Mound Altar, Imperial Vault, Hall of Prayer, exit through North Gate or back to East. Busiest at midday and on weekends.
- Modern main entrance.
- Line 5 subway 2-min walk.
- Default for international visitors.
- Walk west then south to axis.
- Busiest gate.
North Gate - closest to Hall of Prayer
On the north side, 5-minute walk south to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Choose if you want to see the icon first and walk south down the axis (reverse processional order - faster but breaks the conceptual flow). Some buses stop near North Gate; no direct subway.
- Closest to Hall of Prayer (5-min walk south).
- Reverse axis route start.
- Bus access; no direct subway.
- Useful if Hall of Prayer is your priority.
West Gate
On the west side, less used. Choose only if your hotel is in southwest Beijing and walking west to a subway adds time. Quieter at any hour. Walking from West Gate to the axis is ~15 min east. Few international visitors use this gate.
- West side, less used.
- Southwest Beijing hotels.
- Quieter at any hour.
- 15-min walk east to axis.
South Gate - the historical imperial entrance
On the south side, this is where the emperor entered for the winter solstice ceremony - walking north up the axis past Circular Mound Altar, Imperial Vault, and Hall of Prayer. The conceptually correct entry for the historical processional walk. Poor subway access today (no Line 5 station nearby; bus only). Quietest of the four gates. Choose if you want the full south-to-north processional and don't mind bus access.
- Historical imperial entrance.
- Emperor walked north from here.
- Conceptually correct entry.
- Poor subway; bus only.
- Quietest gate.
Common entrance mistakes
Going to West Gate when arriving by Line 5
East Gate is 2 min from Tiantan Dongmen station. West Gate adds 30+ min walking.
Trying to enter without a ticket
All four gates have ticket windows. Buy before entering.
Entering one gate and exiting the same gate
Wastes the south-to-north axis flow. Use East entry, North exit (or vice versa).
Confusing with another Tiantan
Confirm 'Tiantan / Temple of Heaven' with the driver - the area name.
