Summer Palace in Winter

Off-season visit. Frozen lake skating, lower prices, photogenic winter sun on the marble landscape.

  • Subway works in winter; taxi 30-45 min
  • 2-2.5 hr; cold limits standing time
  • Easy walking but cold reduces tolerance

The under-rated off-season

Winter (November-March) is the under-rated season at the Summer Palace. Off-season ticket prices are lower (20 RMB basic / 50 RMB through-ticket vs peak 30/60), crowds drop 50-60% from summer, and in cold winters (January-February) Kunming Lake freezes solid and the park sometimes opens for ice-skating - a Qing-era throwback experience. Cold is the trade-off: Beijing winter averages -5C in January with occasional drops to -15C and dry, windy days. Bare deciduous trees frame Longevity Hill cleanly; the white marble of the 17-Arch Bridge looks dramatic against snow when it falls.

  • Drive time from Beijing: Subway works in winter; taxi 30-45 min
  • Typical visit style: 2-2.5 hr; cold limits standing time
  • Difficulty: Easy walking but cold reduces tolerance
  • Crowds: 50-60% smaller crowds than summer
  • Best for: Anti-crowd travellers; Photographers chasing winter Beijing landscapes; Budget travellers (off-season pricing); Ice-skating-curious visitors
  • Less ideal for: Travellers very sensitive to cold; Boat-ride seekers (lake frozen); Families with very young kids

Why winter is under-rated

Three reasons. (1) Crowds drop 50-60% from summer - the Long Corridor is photographable without 20 people. (2) Off-season pricing: basic 20 RMB, through-ticket 50 RMB (vs 30/60 peak). (3) Frozen lake in January-February sometimes opens for ice-skating - 10-15 RMB skate rental + ice-sledges (Qing-era throwback). Trade-off: cold and dry winds; layers required; boats closed.

  • 50-60% fewer crowds.
  • Off-season pricing 20/50 RMB.
  • Frozen lake ice-skating January-February.
  • Cold + dry winds.
  • Boats closed.

Ice-skating on Kunming Lake

In cold winters (January-February typically) the park opens parts of Kunming Lake for ice-skating - a Qing-era throwback. The Qing imperial court ice-skating tradition is documented in paintings from Qianlong's reign onwards. Today: 10-15 RMB skate rental, ice-sledges available, designated marked area (usually East Causeway side). Subject to ice conditions - some winters the ice isn't thick enough; ask at the gate the morning of. Skating is a memorable family experience and a unique Beijing winter activity.

  • Qing-era throwback tradition.
  • 10-15 RMB skate rental.
  • Ice-sledges available.

What to wear

Layers. (1) Thermal base layer. (2) Warm mid-layer (fleece, wool, down vest). (3) Wind-proof outer shell (Beijing winter wind is the main difficulty, not just temperature). (4) Gloves, hat, scarf. (5) Insulated boots - stone paths and frozen lake surfaces are cold underfoot. Optional: hand warmers, hot drinks thermos. Avoid: light shoes, single-layer parka. Cold-weather visitors who layer correctly do 2-2.5 hours comfortably; those who skimp on layers fade at 90 min.

  • Thermal + fleece + wind-shell.
  • Gloves + hat + scarf.
  • Insulated boots.
  • Hand warmers help.
  • Skimping = 90 min fade.

Best winter day to visit

Late January or early February, ideally 1-2 days after a snowfall when bare trees and pavilions are dusted with snow. Avoid: (1) Lunar New Year week (crowds spike across Beijing). (2) PM 2.5 air quality above 150 (haze blocks photos). (3) -15C with windchill days (skin freezes 10-15 min exposed). Check weather + air-quality forecasts morning of. Photography highlight: white marble 17-Arch Bridge against snow + ice + bare Longevity Hill = iconic winter Beijing shot.

  • Late January / early February best snow odds.
  • Avoid Lunar New Year week.
  • Check PM 2.5 (under 150).
  • Avoid -15C + windchill.
  • Photo: 17-Arch Bridge + snow.
