The single best shot: Tower of Buddhist Incense from East Causeway
Walk to the East Causeway midpoint (the long causeway running south from East Gate to the 17-Arch Bridge). Look west across Kunming Lake. Tower of Buddhist Incense rises on Longevity Hill in the centre-right of the frame. Two golden hours work: (1) 7-9 AM with morning light on the tower (warmer west-facing tones), (2) 4-5 PM with afternoon light (also warm west-facing). Foreground: lake water; midground: lake-edge willows; background: hill and tower. This is the canonical Summer Palace photograph.
- Location: East Causeway midpoint looking west.
- Golden hours: 7-9 AM + 4-5 PM.
- Foreground lake + midground willows + background hill+tower.
- Canonical Summer Palace photo.
17-Arch Bridge - two angles
Two signature angles for the 17-Arch Bridge. (1) From the East Causeway looking west: bridge spans toward South Lake Island, Tower of Buddhist Incense in the distant background on Longevity Hill - the wide-establishing shot. Best at 4-5 PM golden hour. (2) From below the bridge: kneel low at the lake edge, frame the central arch with stone lions on the balustrade above. Best from a dragon-boat passing under the central arch. 544 unique carved lions give close-up portrait opportunities along the balustrade walk.
- From East Causeway: wide establishing shot.
- From below central arch: low-angle dramatic.
- From dragon-boat: passing-under angle.
- Close-ups of 544 unique lions.
Long Corridor ceiling - low light + composition
Two Long Corridor strategies. (1) Look-down-length: stand at one end, photograph the receding columns and painted ceiling beams - gives the world-record scale. Wide lens helps. (2) Close-up of specific paintings: the 14,000 scenes need a stabiliser or slow shutter (low light under the roof). Use phone portrait mode or DSLR with ISO 800-1600. Identify Chinese literature scenes (Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Monkey King) and shoot the named scenes. A guide helps with identification.
- Look-down-length: wide lens, receding columns.
- Close-up paintings: stabiliser, ISO 800-1600.
- Phone portrait + night mode works.
- Identify named literature scenes.
Kunming Lake reflections at sunrise
Arrive at 6:30 AM opening (peak season; 7 AM off-season). The lake is at its calmest in the first hour after sunrise - mirror-flat water reflects Longevity Hill, Tower of Buddhist Incense, and the East Causeway with painterly clarity. Best position: East Gate dock area or East Causeway south end looking northwest. Cool morning tones; minimal crowds; locals doing tai chi on Long Corridor as bonus subjects. The sunrise reflection is the second-best Summer Palace photograph after the East Causeway Tower shot.
- 6:30 AM peak / 7 AM off-season opening.
- Lake mirror-flat first hour.
- Position: East Gate dock or East Causeway south.
- Tai chi bonus subjects on Long Corridor.
- Second-best SP photo after East Causeway Tower.
Common photography mistakes
Going at midday for the Tower
Harsh top-down light. Use golden hour 7-9 AM or 4-5 PM.
Skipping the East Causeway midpoint
It's where the canonical Tower of Buddhist Incense shot is taken - not from on Longevity Hill itself.
Forgetting microfibre cloths
Lake spray + dust + morning dew. Cloths in ziplock bags.
Pointing camera straight up at the Long Corridor ceiling
Hard to compose. Tilt 30-45 degrees and capture both ceiling and column lines.
