Forbidden City Closed on Mondays

Year-round Monday closure. Alternatives and how to re-route the day.

  • Self-guided visit planning
  • Practical tickets, routes, and timing
  • Optional private tours and quotes

Closed every Monday year-round

The Forbidden City is closed every Monday year-round, with rare exceptions during major Chinese national holidays (October 1-7, the week of Lunar New Year, Labour Day week May 1-5). If a Monday falls during these holiday windows, the site may open on that Monday; check the Palace Museum's current calendar for your date rather than assuming a fixed make-up closure. The closure exists to give staff and the centuries-old buildings a weekly maintenance day.

  • Drive time from Beijing: Central Beijing — about 20–45 minutes by subway or taxi
  • Reading time: 3 min; re-routing the day: 5 min
  • Guide type: Cultural background
  • Crowds: Varies by season — see related guides
  • Best for: Anyone whose itinerary lands on a Monday; Multi-day Beijing planners avoiding the closure
  • Less ideal for: Already visiting on a Tuesday-Sunday

Holiday exceptions

During October 1-7 (National Day), the week of Lunar New Year (variable, late January or February), and Labour Day May 1-5, the Forbidden City often opens every day including Monday. Confirm any holiday-week closed day on the Palace Museum calendar for your dates.

  • Lunar New Year week.
  • Labour Day May 1-5.
  • Confirm any holiday-week closed day on the Palace Museum calendar.

Why Monday closure

Two reasons. (1) Routine maintenance of the 600-year-old timber buildings and 980 surviving structures - dusting, repair, exhibit rotation. (2) Staff rest day (most Chinese museums share this convention). The policy applies to most major Chinese national museums.

  • Maintenance of timber buildings.
  • Exhibit rotation.
  • Staff rest day.
  • Standard across Chinese national museums.

Re-routing a Monday plan

Three good Monday alternatives. (1) Great Wall: Mutianyu day with the full 8-hour shape - the perfect non-Forbidden City day. (2) Summer Palace main park grounds (open Mondays; separately charged internal attractions are usually closed Mondays except holidays). (3) Temple of Heaven or a Beijing Experiences cultural day: hutong + calligraphy + dumpling in a private siheyuan, 3-4 hours. The National Museum of China is normally closed Mondays too, so it is not a standard Monday substitute.

  • Great Wall day (Mutianyu).
  • Summer Palace main park (paid attractions may be closed Monday).
  • Temple of Heaven or hutong / cultural experience.
  • Save the Forbidden City for Tuesday morning when possible.

Move the day to a Monday alternative

Mondays are excellent Great Wall days. Our Mutianyu private tour fits a Monday perfectly and lets you save Tuesday for the Forbidden City.

Or pair a cultural experience (hutong + dumpling) with the Forbidden City moved to Tuesday.
