Closed every Monday year-round
The Forbidden City is closed every Monday year-round, with rare exceptions during major Chinese national holidays (October 1-7, the week of Lunar New Year, Labour Day week May 1-5). If a Monday falls during these holiday windows, the site opens; the following Tuesday is then closed instead. The closure exists to give staff and the centuries-old buildings a weekly maintenance day.

Holiday exceptions
During October 1-7 (National Day), the week of Lunar New Year (variable, late January or February), and Labour Day May 1-5, the FC opens every day including Monday. The following Tuesday becomes the closed day instead.
- October 1-7 National Day.
- Lunar New Year week.
- Labour Day May 1-5.
- Tuesday closes instead during these weeks.
Why Monday closure
Two reasons. (1) Routine maintenance of the 600-year-old timber buildings and 980 surviving structures - dusting, repair, exhibit rotation. (2) Staff rest day (most Chinese museums share this convention). The policy applies to most major Chinese national museums.
- Maintenance of timber buildings.
- Exhibit rotation.
- Staff rest day.
- Standard across Chinese national museums.
Re-routing a Monday plan
Three good Monday alternatives. (1) Great Wall: Mutianyu day with the full 8-hour shape - the perfect non-FC day. (2) National Museum of China: directly east of Tiananmen Square, free, fully indoor, 2-4 hours. (3) Beijing Experiences cultural day: combined hutong + calligraphy + dumpling in a private siheyuan, 3-4 hours.
- Great Wall day (Mutianyu).
- National Museum (free, indoor).
- Cultural experience (hutong + brush + kitchen).
- Save the FC for Tuesday morning.
