Doctoral Study in China
Doctoral study in China is a PhD at a university that accepts your research plan, usually after a master’s, and the tuition cell is often still blank even when the length is printed. DragonTrail does not match supervisors and does not charge a doctoral fee.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
Peking University’s 2026 graduate PDF says humanities PhD study is four years and science PhD study is four to five years, then says tuition notification will be provided upon approval. One part-time row prints 150,000 RMB. A law row says TBA. Embassy scholarship rules below are for the 2026/2027 Chinese Government Scholarship, not a universal admissions law.
At a Glance
| Credential | A doctoral degree from the admitting university. Order No. 42 lists 博士研究生 as a degree category. A visiting research stay is not that degree. |
|---|---|
| Length on the PKU PDF | Humanities PhD programs: four years. Science PhD programs: four to five years, with the total fee tied to the length once a fee exists. |
| Tuition we could not quote | The generic humanities and science PhD rows say notification upon approval. Do not borrow a master’s total to fill them. |
| A printed exception | One row, a part-time Chinese-taught curriculum-and-teaching PhD at the School of Chinese as a Second Language, lists 150,000 RMB over four years. A part-time law PhD says to be announced. |
| CSC age line | The Bahamas embassy notice for 2026/2027 says doctoral scholarship applicants should hold a master’s and be under 40. That is a scholarship eligibility line, not every department’s rule. |
| Language on that notice | Chinese-taught doctoral scholarship applicants on the same notice need HSK 4. English-taught programs are told to follow the university’s own English evidence, such as IELTS or TOEFL. |
| File the notice describes | A pre-admission document from the university, a study plan of at least 800 words for postgraduates, and two recommendations. The university’s review still comes after the embassy’s. |
| Not a supervisor service | Professors and departments choose research students. A downloaded pre-admission certificate, where Peking University issues one, is not the final result. |
| DragonTrail | We can help you read a PDF cell. We cannot write to a laboratory or guarantee a stipend. |
A PhD Is a Research Contract With One University
Doctoral study in China is easy to describe as “find a professor” and hard to price, because the professor is not a product and the fee table often refuses to name a number. Peking University’s 2026 PDF for international graduate fees is explicit about time and vague about money. Humanities PhD programs are four years, full-time, in Chinese or English, with tuition to be notified after approval. Science PhD programs are four to five years on the same terms, and the note says the total depends on the length of study. Until the university fills the cell, there is no honest doctoral sticker price for those rows.
A research scholar or a senior visiting student can work near a laboratory without being a PhD candidate. Peking University’s visiting list describes a research scholar track as open all year and a senior visiting track as usually one year. Neither of those sentences is an offer of a 博士学位. Non-Degree University Study is the page for stays that do not end in the degree. If your goal is the degree, the admission letter should say doctoral study, not visiting study.
When a Number Appears, Read the Row
The same PDF shows why “PhD tuition in China” is not a single search result. A part-time PhD in curriculum and teaching, taught in Chinese at the School of Chinese as a Second Language, is listed at 150,000 RMB for four years. A part-time law PhD, also Chinese-taught and four years, says TBA in another notice. Those two rows are a warning. One published total does not spill into the next school, and a part-time professional doctorate is not the same contract as a full-time science PhD whose fee is still unapproved.
Master’s totals on that PDF are more numerous and must not be reused. An English-taught master’s at 160,000 RMB is a master’s. The New Media page’s 80,000 RMB a year is a master’s. Fudan’s 50,000 to 269,900 RMB band is a postgraduate reference aimed at its English-taught list, which includes doctoral applicants in the sense that a master’s is required for them, but the band is not a doctoral invoice you can pay. Master Degree Programs keeps those figures on the degree they belong to.
What One Embassy Asked of Doctoral Scholarship Applicants
The Chinese embassy in the Bahamas published a 2026/2027 Chinese Government Scholarship note with doctoral lines you can check, and should not universalize. Applicants needed a master’s, age under 40, and, for Chinese-taught doctoral study, HSK 4. Programs in other languages were told to provide the university’s language evidence, with IELTS or TOEFL given as examples. Every applicant needed a pre-admission document from the Chinese university, such as a pre-admission notice or a professor’s invitation. Postgraduate study plans had to be at least 800 words. Two recommendations were required. The online system was campuschina.org, and that notice’s own deadline was 14 February 2026.
Other embassies did not copy the date. Trinidad and Tobago’s notice closed the same scholarship year on 15 February 2026 and also told bachelor’s applicants, not only doctoral ones, about CSCA. Belgium’s page used 20 February 2026. Doctoral scholarship applicants should read their own dispatching authority. Peking University adds a local step for Type A: apply to the university, download a certificate after the early check, and remember that the certificate is not final admission. The postgraduate download window on that page ran to 23 February 2026. None of these dates is a 2027 doctoral calendar.
Supervisors, Study Plans, and What We Will Not Pretend To Do
A doctoral file stands or falls on a question a department wants supervised. The embassy notice asks for a plan of at least 800 words and for a document showing the university is willing to look at you. Some professors write an invitation. Some international offices issue the pre-admission note only after their own review. DragonTrail does not keep a list of professors who are “taking students,” and we will not email a laboratory in your name. If a page online offers to guarantee a supervisor for a fee, that offer is not this guide.
Write the plan for the department’s field, in the language they ask for, and keep the claims inside work you have actually done. The Bahamas notice says documents in languages other than Chinese or English need notarized translations, and that unclear scans are the applicant’s problem. A master’s transcript is the usual academic record they ask to see. Academic Credits and Transcripts explains why the scale on that transcript may not match the scale a foreign committee expects. Bring both the original and the translation.
Language at Entry and Language at Graduation
Entry language and graduation language are different sentences. A Chinese-taught doctorate may ask for HSK at entry. The Bahamas scholarship notice used HSK 4 for Chinese-taught doctoral applicants, which is a lower bar than Peking University’s HSK 6 above 210 for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s on the Type A page. Do not mix them. An English-taught doctorate should show the English evidence that program prints. Fudan’s English-taught postgraduate PDF, which covers doctoral as well as master’s applicants, prints TOEFL 90, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 110, or PTE 61 unless a school asks for more.
Degree rules for international students also expect Chinese language and a China-survey course inside degree programs, under Order No. 42. A quality standard used for international students in China has described a lower Chinese level at graduation for foreign-taught doctorates than for Chinese-taught programs. Ask the school which standard it applies to your catalog year. English as the seminar language does not delete every Chinese requirement, and a scholarship HSK line does not delete the department’s own line.
Years, Visas, and a Blank Fee
Four years, or four to five, is long-stay study. The Beijing municipal guide and Peking University’s degree pages point to an X1 visa with the admission letter and a JW201 or JW202 form, then a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. A doctoral admission notice is what you show the consulate. A professor’s informal email is not that notice unless the international office says it is the pre-admission document they accept. Insurance rules at Peking University, stated on the undergraduate brochure, require cover before registration. Confirm the same rule on the graduate instructions for the year you enter.
Budget without a fake tuition. If the PDF cell is blank, your cost conversation is incomplete. Housing, the stipend if a scholarship pays one, and the remainder if a scholarship does not cover an English-taught fee are three different lines. Peking University has already warned, for English-taught programs, that the Chinese Government Scholarship does not pay the whole invoice. How To Apply orders the papers. Find a Suitable Program does not list doctoral openings. Send the blank PDF and the department page if you want them read side by side.

FAQ
Can DragonTrail find a PhD supervisor in China?
No. Departments and professors decide whether to supervise. Some scholarship routes ask you to obtain a pre-admission document from the university first. We do not keep a roster of open laboratories and we do not send emails to faculty for you.
How much is PhD tuition at Peking University?
For the generic humanities and science rows on the 2026 PDF, the university said it would notify you after approval. A part-time Chinese-taught curriculum PhD is listed at 150,000 RMB. A part-time law PhD says to be announced. Those are not interchangeable, and none of them is a DragonTrail fee.
How many years should I plan?
The same PDF prints four years for humanities PhD programs and four to five years for science PhD programs, and it says the total fee depends on length once the fee exists. Your admission letter can set a different clock. Do not assume three years because that is common somewhere else.
Is HSK 4 enough for a doctorate?
It is the Chinese-taught doctoral line on the Bahamas embassy’s 2026/2027 scholarship notice. It is not Peking University’s HSK 6 line for a Chinese-taught bachelor’s, and it may not be your department’s line. English-taught doctorates ask for the English evidence that program prints.
Does a professor’s email mean I am admitted?
Only if the university treats that email as its pre-admission document, and even then Peking University says an early certificate is not the final result. Admission, the JW form, and registration are later steps. Keep the international office’s letter, not only a personal reply.
Are scholarship deadlines the same in every country?
No. For the 2026/2027 cycle the notices we read used 14 February, 15 February, and 20 February 2026 depending on the embassy. All of those dates have passed. The next cycle needs your dispatching authority’s new note and the university’s new note.
Is a research-scholar stay a PhD?
No. Peking University lists research scholars separately from degree students, with applications described as open all year on the visiting hub, and without a doctoral fee on that page. The degree category in the ministry order is 博士研究生. Ask which status the admission letter uses.
What should I send for a doctoral reading?
Send the fee PDF page for your school, the department’s supervisor rules, and any scholarship checklist from your embassy. Say whether the teaching language is Chinese or English. We will flag blank cells and closed dates. We will not invent a stipend or submit the file.
