Academic Credits and Transcripts

Academic credits and transcripts in China are the host university’s record of what you took, on that university’s scale. A 学分 is not a US semester hour, and it is not an NYU Shanghai credit, until the office that grants your degree at home says so. DragonTrail does not issue transcripts and cannot convert one scale into another.

Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).

We are not publishing a conversion chart because the hosts did not publish one that works everywhere. The numbers below are theirs, read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai): 30 credits on one Peking University master’s, a visiting fee with no credit count, a Fudan summer cap of six content credits, and NYU Shanghai’s own RMB-per-credit table.

At a Glance

Whose unitThe university that taught the course. Order No. 42 has the school record status and issue the credential. Your home registrar decides what that paper means.
PKU New MediaThe 2026 English master’s says 30 credits over two years. That sentence belongs to that degree. It does not price a visiting semester.
Visiting fee, no countPeking University’s general visiting page, stamped 2024-04-01, lists 24,000 RMB a semester for credit courses and does not say how many 学分 that semester contains.
Fudan summer capThe 2026 International Summer Session is a flat fee for up to six content credits, plus physical education and a Chinese course. It is not a semester transcript.
NYU Shanghai scaleThe 2026–27 portal table prices one credit at ¥14,121 and 12 to 18 credits at ¥231,437 per term. That credit is NYU Shanghai’s, for students on that portal.
Exchange waiverA tuition-waived exchange nominee at Fudan’s summer still needs the home school to accept the credits. A waiver is not a transfer decision.
What we cannot stampDragonTrail will not write “equals 3 US credits” on a Chinese transcript. Ask the host for the key and the home office for written approval before you pay.
Language of the paperAsk who issues the transcript and whether an English version is the official one or a translation. A photo of a grade page is not the sealed record.

The Host’s Unit, Not a Universal Hour

Credit questions in China go wrong when a 学分 is treated as a universal hour. Peking University can define a credit inside one degree, Fudan can cap content credits inside a four-week session, and NYU Shanghai can price a credit on its Shanghai portal, and those three uses of the word still disagree. None of them becomes a US semester hour because a brochure used the English word “credit.” The office that will eventually print your degree at home is the office that can approve a conversion.

Order No. 42 puts recording and the credential with the school, not with an outside agency and not with DragonTrail. Electronic registration, where the order requires it, is the school’s process. A pre-admission PDF, a scholarship note, or an email that says you are “expected to take four courses” is not the transcript. Wait for the document the registrar at the host actually issues, and ask what stamp makes it official.

Thirty Credits on One Peking University Degree

The School of New Media’s 2026 English-taught master’s at 北京大学 states 30 credits across two years, at 80,000 RMB a year. Read that as the shape of that degree: a credit total, a length, and a fee that belong together. It does not tell a visiting undergraduate how many credits sit inside a different semester, and it does not tell a doctoral applicant how a dissertation is credited. Pulling “30” onto another row of the graduate PDF is how a blank science fee becomes a fake number.

If your home university wants a course-by-course map, the New Media total is only the denominator for that program. You still need the syllabus, the contact hours, and the assessment for each course you hope to move. DragonTrail does not keep those syllabi and cannot sign the map. Master Degree Programs is where the rest of that degree’s fee logic sits.

A Visiting Semester That Never States the Count

Peking University’s general visiting page prices Chinese courses at 18,000 RMB a semester and credit courses at 24,000 RMB a semester, with the page time 2024-04-01. The credit-course line requires the new HSK 6 above 180 when the courses are Chinese-taught. What it does not do is state a 学分 total for the semester. Paying 24,000 RMB therefore buys the right to select courses under that program’s rules, not a published number of credits you can show a registrar in advance.

Do not promote the 2024 stamp into a 2026 invoice, and do not divide 24,000 by the New Media program’s 30 credits to invent a unit price. Those are different products. The visiting hub also lists a summer lab with no courses and no credits, and a research-scholar route with no fee printed. A lab that exempts credits cannot be turned into a transcript after you arrive. Visiting Student Programs keeps the admission rules. This section only keeps the missing count visible.

Fudan’s Cap of Six Content Credits

Fudan University’s 2026 International Summer Session, 13 July to 7 August, is the rare page that states a ceiling: up to six content credits inside a flat fee, plus physical education and a Chinese course. Tuition on the fee page is 22,000 RMB, or 19,800 RMB if a partner nominates you. Exchange nominees whose tuition is waived pay neither the 400 RMB application fee nor the tuition. The fee still excludes accommodation, meals, transport, and insurance. Those dates and prices are Fudan’s, and the application deadlines on the municipal notice had closed before 29 October 2026.

“Credit-transferable” on that session means the host designed the courses so a home school could consider them. It does not mean your home school has agreed. Six content credits are not a semester, and they are not six US semester hours. Send the course list to your registrar before you pay the flat fee. A refusal after the session is a transfer decision, not a billing error Fudan is required to undo.

NYU Shanghai’s Credit Is a Third Scale

NYU Shanghai’s 2026–27 schedule for portal students studying in Shanghai prices credits in RMB: ¥14,121 for one credit in a term, and ¥231,437 for the 12-to-18 credit band per term. That ladder is how NYU Shanghai bills its own students. It is not a converter for a 学分 at 北京大学, and it is not the Fudan summer cap. Housing and GeoBlue sit on other lines of the same schedule, so a credit price is not the cost of being in Shanghai.

If you are an NYU student going to Shanghai, use NYU’s own approval process for which Shanghai courses count toward the NYU degree. If you are not an NYU student, do not borrow ¥14,121 as the value of a credit somewhere else. Joint and Dual Degree Pathways keeps the rest of that term table. A transcript from a different Chinese university still needs its own key.

What To Send the Home Registrar

Send four things before you rely on transfer: the host’s official course list for the term you will actually attend, the credit or hour key printed on that host’s transcript legend, the language of instruction, and a written note from your home school naming which courses it will consider. A visiting plan of 500 to 1,000 words may satisfy Peking University’s file and still say nothing your registrar can use. Scholarship letters and JW forms prove a visa path. They do not prove credit.

DragonTrail can help you see which of those four items is missing. We cannot request the sealed transcript, translate it into an official record, or promise that a professional body at home will accept it. Plan Your Study Stay is arrival and housing. How To Apply is the document order. The credit decision stays with the two registrars, and only the host’s registrar can correct a grade. Also ask how a fail, a withdrawal, and a blank are recorded, because a home audit can treat those three marks differently. If the legend is only in Chinese, ask whether an English legend is part of the official paper or a courtesy sheet you must not staple on yourself. Keep the original envelope when the host seals the transcript. A registrar who wants that envelope unopened will not accept a scan you printed at home.

FAQ

Does one Chinese credit equal one US semester hour?

Not by itself. A 学分 is the host’s unit. Peking University, Fudan, and NYU Shanghai already use different counts and different prices. Only the office that grants your degree at home can approve a conversion, in writing, for the courses you will take.

How many credits does Peking University’s 24,000 RMB visiting semester include?

The general visiting page we read does not say. It lists 24,000 RMB for credit courses and an HSK condition, and it leaves the 学分 count out. Do not invent the count from the New Media master’s 30 credits or from a US university’s catalog.

What does Fudan’s six-credit summer actually cap?

Up to six content credits inside the 2026 International Summer Session’s flat fee, plus physical education and a Chinese course. It is a four-week session, not a semester, and “credit-transferable” still leaves the accept-or-refuse decision to your home school.

Can I use NYU Shanghai’s per-credit price to value another university’s transcript?

No. ¥14,121 is one credit on NYU Shanghai’s 2026–27 portal table for students studying in Shanghai. A 学分 at another university is a different unit with a different issuer. The price is a bill, not a conversion rate.

Who issues the transcript?

The school that taught you. Order No. 42 puts credentials and registration with the school. Ask whether the English copy is official. DragonTrail does not issue, seal, or store Chinese university transcripts.

Does a tuition waiver mean the credits will transfer?

No. Fudan’s summer can waive tuition for an exchange nominee and still leave transfer to the home university. A Chinese Government Scholarship letter has the same limit: it may pay fees and still say nothing about your home degree audit.

What if the host grade is wrong?

The host registrar corrects the host record. A screenshot, a DragonTrail email, or a home-school appeal cannot rewrite a Chinese university’s grade. Start with the host’s published appeal window, if it has one, while you are still enrolled.

Should I pay before my home school answers?

Only if you can afford the term even when nothing transfers. Get the course list and a written note from the degree-granting office first when transfer is the reason you are going. A closed application window is not a reason to skip that note.
