Semester Abroad in China
A semester abroad in China is one academic term of courses at a host university, either because your home campus nominated you or because you applied as a visiting student. It is not a four-week summer, and it is not a degree. The credit load and the fee have to come from the host’s page, then survive your home university’s approval.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
Peking University’s visiting page prices a credit-course semester at 24,000 RMB and a Chinese-course semester at 18,000 RMB, and stamps itself 2024-04-01. It does not say how many 学分 that semester contains. Fudan’s 2026 summer was four weeks at 22,000 RMB for up to six content credits, which is not a semester. DragonTrail does not package either product.
At a Glance
| Length | One term. Peking University describes a fall semester as usually September to January and a spring semester as usually late February to June. The year’s calendar overrides that sketch. |
|---|---|
| Two ways in | A home-university nomination under an agreement, or a direct visiting application. Only the first can be an exchange. The second is priced to you. |
| Visiting prices to verify | 18,000 RMB for Chinese courses or 24,000 RMB for credit courses, plus 400 RMB to apply, on the 2024-stamped page. Not a DragonTrail semester rate. |
| Who can apply direct | Students who have finished at least one undergraduate year. Chinese-taught credit courses need HSK 6 above 180. Language classes do not set a basic Chinese level. |
| Credit gap | The visiting fee does not state a credit total. Fudan’s summer cap of six content credits is a different, shorter product. Home approval is still required. |
| Apply months as written | Fall: 1 March to 30 April. Spring: 1 to 30 November. Confirm they are open for the year you mean before you pay a non-refundable fee. |
| Visa hinge | A semester that runs past six months is the X1 and JW202 pattern on the visiting page. A shorter term is X2. Count the notice, not the season. |
| Not included | Housing, meals, and insurance sit outside the visiting tuition lines we read. Fudan’s summer fee page says the same about its own exclusions. |
| DragonTrail | No semester catalog. We cannot pre-approve credit for your home degree. |
One Term, Two Different Contracts
Semester abroad in China usually means a fall or a spring of classes, then a flight home, with the home degree still in charge. The contract underneath is either an exchange nomination or a visiting application. Fudan’s 2026 summer pages show the nomination version in miniature: if your university nominates you under a tuition-free agreement, the host waives tuition. If it does not, you pay the published price. That example is four weeks long. A semester uses the same logic and a different calendar. University Exchange Programs is the nomination case. Visiting Student Programs is the direct case.
Do not buy a summer and call it a semester because both are “time in China.” Fudan International Summer Session 2026 was 13 July to 7 August, with a flat 22,000 RMB and a cap of six content credits plus physical education and Chinese. Peking University’s visiting page describes a semester running for months, at 18,000 or 24,000 RMB, and never states a credit cap. The papers you show a registrar are different. DragonTrail does not sell a term in either city.
What a Peking University Semester Claims
The general visiting page says the usual stay is one semester or one academic year. For one semester you pick Chinese courses or credit courses after at least a year of undergraduate study at home. Chinese courses have no basic language floor and cost 18,000 RMB on that page. Credit courses taught in Chinese need HSK 6 above 180 and cost 24,000 RMB. The application fee is 400 RMB, non-refundable. Fall applications are written as March and April. Spring applications are written as November. The page time is 2024-04-01, so the amounts need a live check on the day you would pay.
The academic content is the university’s catalog, including courses the page says visitors may choose, plus a pointer to Global Open Courses. Choice is not enrollment. A class can be full, taught in Chinese you do not have, or closed to non-degree students. Ask the department for the term’s list before you promise your home university a specific title. The mailing packet — transcripts, a 500-to-1,000-word plan, two recommendations, passport page — is part of the semester, not a detail to skip because the classes look interesting.
Credits, Contact Hours, and Approval at Home
A semester abroad fails quietly when the host’s 学分 do not match the home degree’s credit hour. Peking University’s New Media master’s, a degree program, says 30 credits over two years. That sentence does not tell a visiting undergraduate how many credits one 24,000 RMB semester contains. Fudan’s summer is explicit about six content credits and still leaves transfer to the home school. NYU Shanghai publishes a RMB price per credit for its own degree students, which is a third scale. None of these is a US semester hour until your registrar says so.
Before you apply, ask your study-abroad office for the maximum outside credits, the grade conversion, and whether a non-degree transcript is eligible at all. Get the host’s syllabus or at least the contact hours. Academic Credits and Transcripts is the longer warning. If the office will not pre-approve, a semester can still be worth taking for the language, but you should know you may be paying for a transcript that does not move your graduation date.
The Calendar Decides the Visa
Peking University says a fall semester usually runs from September to January and a spring semester from late February to June, and that the year’s calendar wins. A term of that length often exceeds six months, which on the visiting page means an X1 visa, a JW202 form, and a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. A shorter official term would be X2. The Beijing municipal guide puts the hinge at 180 days and asks for an admission notice. Count days on the notice. Do not assume “semester” always means X1, and do not assume a July course uses the same visa as September to January.
Insurance is a registration issue, not a travel extra you can postpone. The visiting page says students buy medical insurance in China and will not be registered without it. Degree pages at the same university point to a named comprehensive plan. Use the sentence on your letter. Housing is outside the 18,000 or 24,000 RMB. Off-campus addresses, on the bachelor’s brochure, must be registered with public security within 24 hours. Ask whether visiting students are held to that same clock.
Money for One Term, Without a Package Price
Add the lines the host excluded. On the visiting page the semester fee is tuition for courses, not the room, the canteen, the insurance, the flight, or the books. On the Fudan summer page the same exclusions appear even when tuition is waived for exchange nominees. A partner discount, when it exists, is a percentage off tuition, not off the airline. Cost of Studying is the place to park daily life once the tuition line is real. Until you confirm the 2024 visiting prices, keep them in a column labeled “unconfirmed.”
Application fees are small and easy to waste. Four hundred RMB at Peking University and, for the summer, 400 RMB at Fudan are non-refundable. Pay only when the window on the screen matches the term you can attend. A March–April window does not admit you in November. A closed June 2026 summer deadline does not admit you to a September semester. DragonTrail does not collect these fees and does not refund them if a host does not either.
How To Choose the Term
Choose the term from your home calendar first. A fall in China can collide with a required course at home, and a spring can collide with a thesis deadline. Then choose the host from the courses you can actually enter, the language, and the fee you have verified this month. A famous name with no pre-approved credits is a weaker semester than a lesser-known department that your office already maps. Universities and Schools will not rank the hosts for you. How To Choose a University in China is about fit, not about a league table.
Bring us the host URL, your office’s credit email, and the term you need. We can help you see whether you are looking at an exchange waiver, a visiting invoice, or a summer that is too short. We cannot nominate you, mail the packet, or promise that January on a “usual” calendar is the week your exam falls. How To Apply orders documents for routes you file yourself. The semester still starts when the host says you may register.

FAQ
Is a semester abroad a degree in China?
No. A visiting semester is non-degree study. An exchange semester is still your home degree, hosted elsewhere. You should leave with a transcript or a nomination record, not with a Chinese bachelor’s, unless you separately win a degree admission.
How many credits are in a 24,000 RMB semester?
Peking University’s visiting page does not say. It prices credit courses at 24,000 RMB a semester and points to a catalog. Fudan’s summer, which is not a semester, caps content courses at six credits. Ask the host for the load and your home office for the conversion before you pay.
Can I use the Fudan summer fee as a semester price?
No. The 22,000 RMB figure was for four weeks in July and August 2026, and that deadline has passed. A visiting semester on the Peking University page is priced at 18,000 or 24,000 RMB and runs for a term. They are different products. A later summer needs a new notice.
Do I need an exchange agreement?
Only if you want the exchange price, which can be a waiver. Without a nomination you can still apply as a visiting student if you meet that page’s rules, and you pay the visiting fee. DragonTrail cannot see or create your home university’s agreement.
What Chinese level does one semester need?
On the Peking University visiting page, language classes set no basic requirement, and Chinese-taught credit courses need HSK 6 above 180, after one year of undergraduate study. English-taught summer courses at Fudan asked for strong English instead. Match the test to the courses.
Which visa is a semester?
Whichever matches the dates. The visiting page uses X1 and JW202 above six months and X2 below. A September-to-January term often crosses that line, but the admission notice is the count that matters. The consulate decides.
Are the March and November windows guaranteed every year?
They are how the 2024-stamped page describes a repeating calendar. The same page says the admission notice and the school calendar control the year you enter. Open the live form. A non-refundable 400 RMB is a bad way to discover the window moved.
What should I send if I want a semester checked?
Send the host page, the term, and your home office’s note on credit. Say if you have a nomination or you are applying alone. We will not invent a credit total the host omitted, and we will not submit the application.
