Biomedical Research
Biomedical research in China, on the pages opened for this cluster, means a joint PhD described by 上海交通大学医学院 or a master’s that expects research ability at 上海中医药大学. It does not mean a bench DragonTrail can book, a dataset we hold, or a right to handle patient samples.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
The joint PhD page is the postgraduate page that opened. It is not a list of laboratories. The SHUTCM mentor catalog, which would show whether a basic-science supervisor exists, was not opened. Campus China and the China Scholarship Council address did not return usable pages on 29 October 2026. No research placement is confirmed.
At a Glance
| Joint PhD themes | Immune regulation, cancer, infection immunity, metabolic disorders, and cell and developmental biology, on the 上海交通大学医学院 joint page with Hebrew University. |
|---|---|
| Who may apply | A master’s degree with a thesis, age under 40, good health, GPA 85 or above. Two supervisors, one principal supervisor from each university, contacted before the proposal. |
| English bar | TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7 for the Hebrew University requirement on that page, or proof that earlier degrees were taught in English. CET-6 at 425 is printed for Chinese students. |
| Fees there | International application fee RMB 800, not refunded. Chinese applicants RMB 250. Both sides remit tuition for the first five years of this joint programme. No other yearly tuition is printed. |
| SHUTCM research line | Applicants without a TCM background need a medicine or related-science degree and the ability to study and do research. That is an entry line, not a lab key. |
| SHUTCM fees | CNY 34,000 to CNY 60,000 a year by language and full-time status, if the major is in that prospectus. Catalog not opened. |
| Samples and patients | Not authorised. A science theme is not ethics approval and not access to a biobank. |
| Clock | SHUTCM master’s window closed 15 May 2026. The joint PhD page tells Chinese applicants to use the SJTU system before 10 December and does not print the year beside that day. |
| What DragonTrail holds | No benches, no supervisors, and no sample access. |
One Joint PhD Page Is Not a Laboratory Directory
The postgraduate programmes URL at 上海交通大学医学院 opened on a single joint PhD with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Faculty of Medicine. The scientific range is wide — immune regulation, cancer, infection immunity, metabolic disorders, cell and developmental biology — and the contractual range is narrow. You need a master’s with a thesis, you must be under 40, your master’s GPA must be 85 or above, and you must already have approached two supervisors, with at least one principal supervisor at each university, before you draft the proposal. The proposal has to sit on both mentors’ directions. A cold email that says “any cancer lab” does not meet that sentence.
Application materials named on the page are forms, diplomas, transcripts, publications, and three recommendation letters. The graduation certificate must be recognised by the Ministry of Education and verified by the Chinese overseas representative office and the joint programme office. International applicants pay RMB 800. The page says both universities remit tuition for the first five years of joint PhD study. Read “this programme” into that sentence. It is not a waiver for every research master’s in Shanghai, and it does not state that the degree itself lasts five years.
A Theme Is Not a Bench, a Mouse, or a Freezer
Research pages often imply a place to stand. This one does not give you that place. There is no list of buildings, core facilities, or ongoing trials. There is no sentence that lets a visitor handle patient tissue, look at an identified record, or join a night shift in a lab. Ethics approval, if a project needs it, belongs to the universities after you are their student. DragonTrail cannot pre-approve it and should not be sent patient-level data while you are only asking for advice.
The same limit applies at 上海中医药大学. The master’s prospectus says people without a TCM background must hold a medicine or related-science degree and should be able to study and conduct research. It also says you confirm one mentor from the catalog and pass a summary test. We did not open the catalog. A biomedical topic you care about may have no mentor there. Full-time English or Japanese classes need five students. A solitary applicant with a niche assay can be academically strong and still have no class.
Keep the Remission and the Yuan Table Apart
Put the joint PhD money in one column and the SHUTCM master’s money in another. Joint PhD: application RMB 800 for international applicants, tuition remitted for the first five years of that programme, no yearly tuition number printed. SHUTCM master’s: application CNY 800 unless you are CSC Type A, then CNY 34,000 a year for full-time Chinese-taught study, CNY 51,000 for full-time English or Japanese, and higher part-time figures, with books, housing, and CNY 800 insurance outside the fee. The SHUTCM line that tuition covers “clinical internship” is about that master’s, not about the joint PhD, and it still does not describe lab access.
Scholarships are a third column. The joint page encourages eligible applicants to apply to the China Scholarship Council and prints an address. That address returned an error when we requested it, so no CSC stipend is stated here. SHUTCM points to campuschina.org, which did not open. The detailed Shanghai Government Scholarship allowances we can quote are on the 上海交通大学医学院 guide and are for that school’s applicants. Do not add RMB 3,500 a month to the joint PhD because the person is doctoral. The guide’s doctoral allowance is for its own scholarship, and the joint page has its own remission sentence.
Dates and Papers Without a Year We Did Not See
Chinese applicants to the joint PhD are told to file on the SJTU graduate website before 10 December, and also to meet the 2026 SJTU School of Medicine graduate admissions notice. The day “10 December” has no year in the sentence we read. Do not write 2026 or 2027 onto it. International applicants are pointed to an online form on a school URL. Scans are required. We did not complete a test application, so we do not describe the form’s fields beyond what the page lists.
SHUTCM’s research-capable master’s closed for 2026 on 15 May 2026, with notices by mid-July. Papers include a passport advised at ten months’ validity, notarized translations, a recommendation from an associate professor or higher for full-time study, and funds of at least CNY 100,000 or the school’s statement. HSK 5 at 180 is the Chinese-taught bar. English-taught study uses TOEFL 90 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native speakers, which is a lower IELTS figure than the joint PhD’s IELTS 7. The two English bars are not interchangeable. Bring the bar that matches the file.
Patient Material Is Outside a Study Enquiry
Biomedical projects often use human samples. Nothing on these pages authorises you to collect, export, or read them. Observation on a ward, covered on the elective pages, is a different contract and still does not hand you a freezer. If a future supervisor asks for a medical history as part of a real application, that request comes from the university, under its rules, after you are in their process. Do not attach clinical files to a DragonTrail guidance note. We cannot safeguard them and we do not need them to explain the route.
A home university that wants a joint PhD for its own student still has to live with the two-supervisor rule and the Ministry verification of the earlier degree. DragonTrail is not the Chinese overseas representative office and cannot stamp that verification. We also do not rank Hebrew University or 上海交通大学. The joint page praises both. Praise is not an admission score, and the GPA line of 85 is the line that is actually operational.
Decide Whether You Need a Degree or a Look Inside a Lab
A look inside a working lab is not what these pages offer. They offer degree applications with supervisors you must find yourself. A short hospital observation is the elective route, and it is for people near the end of clinical training, not for a first-year research interest. If you need the degree, start from the supervisor rule and the fee column that matches the school. If the catalog or the supervisor says no, the honest outcome is no seat, not a substituted bench from a neighbouring institute.
Guidance from DragonTrail can help you tell a joint PhD from a TCM master’s and can list the papers each page names. It cannot introduce you to a principal investigator or promise that tuition remission still reads the same way next year.

These pages were read on 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai). Tuition, language rules, and application windows change, and the 2026 windows on the school pages had already closed. A CUCAS card is CUCAS’s listing. The World Directory of Medical Schools did not return a directory page. The Campus China address named in a scholarship paragraph did not open. A hospital email printed by a university is that university’s contact. It is not a placement DragonTrail has confirmed, and it is not permission to examine a patient.

FAQ
Can DragonTrail place me in a biomedical lab in China?
No. The joint PhD requires you to contact two supervisors yourself, one at each university, before the proposal. The SHUTCM master’s requires a mentor from a catalog we did not open. We have no bench list.
Is PhD tuition free?
The joint page says both sides remit tuition for the first five years of that joint programme. It does not print a yearly fee and it does not waive tuition for other degrees. The application fee of RMB 800 for international applicants is still charged and is not refunded.
What GPA and age does the joint PhD ask for?
A master’s GPA of 85 or above, and age under 40, plus a master’s degree with a thesis and good health. English evidence on that page is TOEFL 90, IELTS 7, or proof of English-medium study. Those figures are not the SHUTCM master’s figures.
Does the cancer theme mean I can join a cancer ward?
No. The themes describe the faculties’ scientific range. They are not a rota and not permission to see patients or handle samples. Ward observation is a separate, requested elective with its own rules.
Which English score is higher, the joint PhD or the SHUTCM master’s?
The joint page prints IELTS 7 or TOEFL 90. The SHUTCM English-taught master’s prints IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 for non-native speakers. Use the score for the application you are actually filing. A pass on one does not move to the other.
Why is there no CSC stipend on this page?
The joint page and the SHUTCM prospectus point to CSC and Campus China. Those hosts did not return a usable page on 29 October 2026. Inventing a monthly amount would mislead you. Ask the university that would nominate you.
Can I send research data or patient files for advice?
Do not send patient-level files. A study-planning question needs the degree you want and the school page you are reading. Clinical material does not help that question and does not belong in our form.
Had the research master’s closed?
The SHUTCM 2026 master’s period ended on 15 May 2026. The joint PhD page’s 10 December date has no year printed beside it. Do not assume either file is open because a lab website looks active.
