Chinese for Trade and Sourcing
Chinese for trade and sourcing is the Mandarin of specifications, quantities, delivery, and the factory floor. It is for people who already buy, or who are about to walk a production line and would rather not depend entirely on an agent’s translation. It is not a sourcing service, a trading company, or a visa for “a bit of business and a bit of study” unless the visa you actually hold allows both.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not source products, employ inspectors, or book factory access. Language lessons can use a redacted specification. They do not open a supplier’s door. Price the trip’s status honestly: many sourcing visits are business travel, not a semester.
At a Glance
| Core language | Quantities, units, tolerances, dates, Incoterms said in plain Chinese, and the verbs of delay and rework. |
|---|---|
| Not included | Supplier introductions, quality control, or a showroom. Those are commercial services nobody is selling here. |
| Trip length | Often days or a few weeks. That is a language-holiday or a business-visit shape, not an intensive semester. |
| Visa | A short sourcing trip is often business or a permitted short stay, not an X2 language visa. Do not mix the stories. |
| Study format | Private lessons before the trip, plus a phrase list for the floor. A group intensive is optional if you have a month. |
| Cities | Manufacturing talk shows up in many cities. A campus in 杭州 or 苏州 is not automatically a factory visit. |
| Numbers | Drill 万, decimals, and lead times until they are boring. This is where costly mistakes happen. |
| English | Many suppliers speak some English. Your Chinese is for the moment they do not, and for what you overhear. |
| DragonTrail | No buying office and no factory list. |
Language for a Line, Not a Lecture
Sourcing Mandarin fails in predictable places: the difference between a sample and a production run, the way a date can mean shipping or delivery, and the numbers. A course that spends the week on meeting etiquette and never drills units has wasted the buyer’s hour. Bring a redacted spec sheet, a packing list, and three emails that went wrong. That’s Mandarin’s tailor-made private lessons and GoEast’s private hours are the formats that can hold those documents. A general business textbook will orbit the topic. Make the teacher stay on the sheet.
Listening matters more than a speech. On a factory floor you will hear a fast explanation you did not start. GoEast’s spoken track and any private lesson with a recording will serve you better than a writing-heavy HSK drill, unless a trading company has also asked you for a score. HSK is optional here. The specification is not.
Most Sourcing Trips Are Short
A buyer who is in 广州, Yiwu, or a coastal city for ten days does not need a semester product and usually cannot use one. That’s Mandarin’s hotel note is for stays of about two or three weeks. LTL will sell from one week upward. CLI’s FAQ discusses stays of 30 days or less as a possible visa-free study tour for some nationalities, and it says that is not the same as regular study. A sourcing trip may not be a study tour at all. It may be business. Pick one purpose and tell the truth at the border. CLI warns that false information can have serious entry consequences, in language updated on their FAQ. DragonTrail will not help you invent a study story for a buying trip.
The language work fits before the wheels-up date. Ten private hours online, using your spec, plus a one-page phrase sheet, will do more than a panicked group class in a city you leave on Friday. GoEast’s from-USD-29 hour and That’s Mandarin’s online from-168-RMB class are the published shapes of that preparation. Continue for a few hours after the trip while the mistakes are fresh. The online page is written for that before-and-after pattern.
We Do Not Open Factory Doors
Language schools are not buying offices. LTL’s Safari upgrade walks a student through daily errands with a teacher. It is not a supplier audit. That’s Mandarin’s weekend activities are city activities. A “company visit” on a culture or group itinerary is a visit only if the company invited the group. Ask whose customer you are that day. If nobody can name the host, assume you are a tourist in a lobby.
DragonTrail does not maintain a supplier list on this page and will not pretend a study inquiry is a purchasing introduction. If you need an inspector or a sourcing agent, hire that trade under its own contract. Do not fold it into a language invoice so the fees become hard to see.
Trade Language and Office Language
Business Chinese, as the neighboring page defines it, is meetings and email in an office register. Trade Chinese is dirtier and more numerical: defects, rework, cartons, and the moment someone says the color is “basically” the same. You may need both if you sell and you also walk lines. You do not need both in the same week if you only have ten hours. Choose the setting where you lost money or face last time. A polished opening speech will not help you count a short shipment.
Interpreters remain necessary for contracts. Studying Mandarin is not a plan to fire your interpreter on the next trip. It is a plan to follow the conversation, to check a number, and to know when you are being summarized rather than quoted. Tell the teacher that. The goal “replace my agent” is how people buy the wrong month.
Cities Are Markets, Not Campuses
A language campus in 北京 or 上海 can still teach the vocabulary, and those cities are where the schools we cite have the most private-teacher depth. The goods may be elsewhere. Living in a campus district and commuting across a manufacturing region is a daily tax. For a short trip, stay near the suppliers and study online beforehand. For a month of intensive Chinese plus a few factory days, you are mixing two trips. Price the trains and the lost class mornings. That’s Mandarin moves a displaced intensive class into the afternoon when a holiday hits; a factory day you schedule on top of 08:30–12:00 simply means you miss class. Decide which morning matters.
LTL’s city discounts and lifestyle tags are about their schools, not about wholesale markets. Do not read a Beihai discount as a sourcing recommendation. Read it as LTL’s tuition promotion, which is what the page says it is.
Before the Next Buying Trip
Redact a specification and a bad email. Book private hours that drill numbers and the sentences you avoided. Confirm your visa category with the consulate for the actual purpose of the trip. Keep factory access as a separate arrangement with the supplier. Carry a phrase sheet. Record yourself once so you can hear whether the tones on the numbers are clear.
Request Guidance if you want help deciding between a ten-hour online block and a longer stay you do not have time for. DragonTrail will not book the factory and will not sell the lessons. The useful outcome is that you understand the next conversation, including the parts you still hand to an interpreter.
Price the Language Against the Sourcing Trip
Trade Chinese is the language of quantities, delays, samples, and polite refusal. It is not a sourcing desk and not a factory introduction. The schools in this batch sell class hours. LTL’s Beijing one-to-one starts at USD 774 a week and the group at USD 387, with housing quoted separately. A short buying trip often sits on a business or tourist entry, not on an X2. LTL says it cannot process a student visa and may give an acceptance letter and a payment receipt after you pay, for a short-term tourist visa if you need one. That’s Mandarin’s part-time line is two days a week in Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen on the older prices page. Shenzhen appears on that part-time line and not on the intensive city list. If your counterparties are in Shenzhen, ask which product actually runs there before you assume the intensive morning exists.
Online hours are the practical bridge. GoEast’s private packs run across time zones, from USD 29 a class hour, and do not expire into a visa. CLI’s online hours, on the FAQ, do not expire, are non-refundable, allow one transfer, or can be applied toward Guilin at the price you paid, and a cancellation inside 24 hours consumes the hour. Use those rules if you want vocabulary before a fair and a few hours after you fly home. Bring your own product sheet. The teacher can drill the words. The teacher does not negotiate your contract, and DragonTrail does not introduce suppliers.

FAQ
Can DragonTrail introduce suppliers if I book lessons?
No. Lessons are language. Supplier introductions are a different business, and they are not offered here. A school outing is not a factory audit.
Should I get a student visa for a sourcing trip?
Not as a cover story. A short buying trip should use the status that matches business or a permitted short stay for your passport. CLI’s FAQ is blunt that activities should match the visa. Study status is for study. Do not mix them to make a timetable look neat.
Is two weeks of intensive Chinese worth it before a fair?
Two weeks will not make you independent. Ten well-aimed private hours on your specification may change the trip more than a general intensive that spends the morning on a textbook. If you have the month, an intensive can build daily language you will also use. It will not replace an interpreter in a contract meeting.
Do I need business Chinese as well?
If your problem is the office meeting, yes. If your problem is the line and the quantity, start with trade language. The pages are split so you do not buy a polished meeting course for a packing-list problem.
Which numbers should I drill?
Prices, quantities, dates, tolerances, and the words for “more than” and “about.” 万 and the way decimals are said cause real losses. Make the teacher test you out of order, not in a cute ascending list.
Can a group course teach sourcing language?
Only the overlap with general business Chinese. Your specification is confidential and specific. That belongs in a private hour, with the sensitive figures removed.
Will HSK help me on a factory floor?
Indirectly, if it made you study. The paper itself will not quiz you on a defect. Do not delay a sourcing trip for an HSK date unless an employer asked for the score.
Does DragonTrail have a trade desk inside Study?
No. Study planning stays on language, visas as published rules, and city choice. Purchasing is outside this page.
