Online Preparation and Continued Learning
Online Mandarin is how you start before a stay and how you keep going after you leave. It is also a complete way to study if you are not going. It does not give you a visa, a homestay, or the hallway conversation you only get in a city. This page uses the online prices and expiry rules we could read on 29 October 2026 so a short trip is not your only plan.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not sell online lessons and does not extend another school’s unused hours. A from-price is that school’s. A stay in China is a separate purchase with its own housing and visa questions.

What to Finish Before You Fly
The highest-value online work, if a trip is coming, is sounds. Pinyin, tones, and a small speaking set change the first seven days more than a head start on chapter five. GoEast’s beginning stage and CLI’s beginner description agree on that order even though the products differ. Five to fifteen private hours are enough to stop being a pure beginner on day one. They are not enough to skip placement. You will still be tested when you arrive, and you should be.
Buy hours that can pause. CLI says online hours do not expire and that you can later put them toward an in-person immersion at the price you paid per hour. That is unusually clear, and it is their rule. GoEast sells a 16-week group with a start date — the page named 5 May 2026 — and private packs. A group start you will miss because you are already in China is the wrong product. Private hours you can schedule around packing are the right one. That’s Mandarin’s online line is a per-class floor of 168 RMB on a page headed 2020. Ask for the current rate and the expiry.
What to Protect After You Land Home
A month of intensive class fades without a weekly spoken appointment. Book the after-hours before you leave, while you still know the teacher. CLI’s non-expiry rule is designed for this gap: you can stop for a long time and the hours remain, though a late cancel still consumes a lesson if you gave less than 24 hours’ notice. GoEast’s monthly private plan, twelve hours from USD 369, is a heavier maintenance load and a clearer habit. One hour a week is the floor that keeps tones alive. Zero hours a week is how people tell the story of “I used to speak a little.”
Write down five situations you could handle in China and rehearse those, not a new textbook, for the first month home. Then decide whether you are maintaining or climbing. Climbing needs the volume of a group course or more private hours. Maintaining needs the appointment.
Online as the Whole Plan
You may not be going to China. GoEast’s page is built for that student: time zone bands, a trial, and an explicit note that people who want a free app should look elsewhere. A 16-week group at USD 1,152 plus materials is a defined spend. Private hours from USD 29 let a shift worker study. That’s Mandarin’s online private lessons are the same idea from another school. None of these require a visa. None of them should be dressed up as a semester abroad on an application. Say you studied online.
The limit is the life around the lesson. You will not overhear Mandarin in a shop. You will not practice the errand unless you invent it. The speaking page’s recording habit matters more online than it does in a city, because the city will not save you. Turn the camera on. A black rectangle and a muted mic waste the hour you bought.
How Online Stacks with a Campus
A sensible stack is online sounds, then an intensive or university block, then online maintenance. The holiday page needs the first step most, because the trip is too short to include the alphabet. The intensive page assumes you can survive a morning; arriving with pinyin already messy-but-started makes that morning about sentences. The university page has its own placement. Online study does not replace the university’s test and does not earn the credit.
Do not run a full online group and a full intensive morning in the same weeks. You will skip one of them. Pause the online course, and confirm the pause rules first. A 16-week GoEast group that you abandon in week three because you flew to Beijing is an expensive overlap. Private hours are easier to pause than a group that has four other people depending on the start date.
Compare Totals and Cancellation
Put the products in one column: price, minutes, weeks, materials fee, expiry, cancel window. GoEast group: USD 1,152 plus USD 99, forty-eight live hours over sixteen weeks, plus whatever the portal asks you to do alone. GoEast private: from USD 29 a class hour, materials fee also listed, monthly example USD 369 for twelve hours. CLI: no expiry, no refund, 24-hour cancel line, transfer once. That’s Mandarin: from 168 RMB a class on the stale-headed page, expiry not stated in what we read. A cheap hour that expires in thirty days can cost more than a dearer hour you still own in six months.
Trials are samples. GoEast includes one. A trial is not a placement letter and not a start on a student visa. Pay the course only when the teacher’s correction, not the platform’s design, is what you felt.
Decide Which Job the Hour Has
Write “before,” “after,” or “instead” at the top of the email to yourself. Buy the product whose expiry and calendar match that word. Keep a recording habit. If a trip is real, read the visa pages for the trip separately. The online invoice will not be part of the visa file unless a school explicitly ties unused online hours to a later campus letter. CLI is the one that spelled out a path from online hours into Guilin immersion. Do not assume LTL or That’s Mandarin do the same.
Request Guidance with the travel dates, if any, and the hours you can protect at home. We will not open an online classroom. Find a Suitable Program if the online question is really a question about a degree. The lesson starts when you keep the appointment in week three, from your own desk.
Read the Expiry Rule Before You Buy Hours You Will Not Use Yet
Online lessons are the piece you can start before a visa exists and keep after you fly home. They are not a visa. GoEast’s group is 16 weeks, twice a week, 75 minutes, USD 1,152 plus USD 99 materials, with a next group start the school listed as 5 May 2026, and the page notes that billing can move monthly after the first month. Private lessons there start at USD 29 a class hour. CLI’s FAQ says online hours do not expire, are non-refundable, allow one transfer, or can go toward Guilin study at the price you paid, and that cancelling inside 24 hours consumes the hour. That’s Mandarin’s prices page lists online private from 168 RMB a class, under a heading that still says 2020. Ask which rule the checkout page uses on the day you pay.
Use the hours for a specific gap. Before you fly, tones and survival phrases. After you leave, the vocabulary your city actually used. A 16-week group has classmates and a calendar. A private pack has neither, which is why the cancellation rule matters. Time-zone windows are on GoEast’s page. A midnight class you will skip is not cheaper than a morning class you will attend. In-person schools still set the visa paperwork: LTL cannot process a student visa, That’s Mandarin says it provides student-visa materials, CLI discusses X2 and, for the university route, X1. An online receipt is not one of those papers. Online study (在线) can start while the visa is still a question, and it cannot answer the question. DragonTrail does not sell hour packs and does not extend school expiry dates.

FAQ
Will online lessons get me a visa?
No. They do not require a visa and they do not create one. A later stay needs its own status, arranged with the school that will host you in China and with your consulate.
How many hours should I do before a short trip?
Enough to own pinyin and the tones in short sentences. Often that is a handful of private hours, not a 16-week group. The holiday is too short to spend the first days on the alphabet. CLI and GoEast both sell flexible private time you can finish before you fly.
Do unused hours expire?
CLI says no, and says they are not refundable. GoEast sells fixed-length groups and packs; read the pack you buy. That’s Mandarin’s prices page does not state an online expiry in the section we read. Ask. Expiry is the expensive term.
Can I transfer online hours to a stay in China?
CLI says you can put unused online hours toward their Guilin immersion at the rate you paid. That is CLI’s rule. Do not assume another school will convert an online balance into a campus week.
Is a group or a private hour better online?
A group is cheaper per hour and needs a fixed clock. GoEast’s group is two sessions a week for sixteen weeks. A private hour moves for a shift worker and costs more. If your week is unpredictable, do not join a group and then cancel. CLI charges the hour for a late cancel.
Will online study replace a month in China?
It replaces the classroom hour. It does not replace the city. If you need the hallway, the shop, and the homestay, you still need the trip. If you need steady progress from home, online study is the whole plan and you should say so.
The prices page says 2020. Is 168 RMB real?
It is the figure printed on That’s Mandarin’s prices page, whose heading still said 2020 when we read it on 29 October 2026. Treat it as a published floor that may be stale. Ask for a current quote. GoEast’s USD figures were on a page that presents itself as current, including a 2026 group date.
Does DragonTrail host the classes?
No. The teacher and the platform belong to the school you pay. We can help you match a product to before, after, or instead. We do not store your lesson hours.
