Business Chinese
Business Chinese is Mandarin for meetings, email, numbers, and the politeness that keeps a working relationship intact. It is not an MBA, a job placement, or proof you can sign for a company. Most schools teach it as a private track after you can already hold a daily conversation. This page shows how that track is sold, and the materials you should bring so the month is about your work.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail does not offer a business-Chinese cohort, a corporate seat, or an internship that pays. A school’s “business” label means the lessons use work language. Confirm the textbook and your own documents before you pay a specialist premium.
At a Glance
| What it is | Language for work: meetings, presentations, email, numbers, and formal courtesy. |

| What it is not | Not a degree, not a hiring promise, and not permission to work. |
| GoEast | Business Chinese is a private track after level 10, and a reason they give for adult learners on the online page. |
| That’s Mandarin | Private lessons are described as tailor-made. Their consultant note says to ask when your goal is special. |
| Level | Useful after you can survive daily Mandarin. A beginner “business” course is usually survival Chinese with a briefcase on the cover. |
| Format | Private hours fit a real contract or slide deck. A general group will not stay on your industry. |
| Price shape | Expect private rates: GoEast from USD 29 a class hour online; That’s Mandarin from 192 RMB a class on a 2020-headed page; LTL one-to-one weeks from USD 774 in Beijing. |
| Work status | If you will be employed, that is a work visa conversation with the employer, not a line on a language invoice. |

What Belongs in the Lessons
A serious business track uses your artifacts. Bring the email you are afraid to send, the specification you must discuss, and the meeting agenda you will not control. Numbers, dates, and units deserve drills because a wrong 万 or a wrong decimal is a commercial mistake, not a cute learner error. Courtesy formulas — how you delay, refuse, and chase — matter as much as vocabulary lists titled “negotiation.” GoEast lists business Chinese next to advanced HSK and spoken Chinese as what you do after their ten-level group ladder. That placement is a clue: they do not pretend a beginner group is a commerce degree.
That’s Mandarin’s prices page says content can be changed for special goals, and their intensive FAQ says some teachers come from economics, finance, law, and the arts. A biography is not a syllabus. Ask for a four-week outline that names your documents. If the outline is only “Business Chinese Textbook 2,” you are buying a general upper-level course. That can still be right. It should not be priced or described as a bespoke consultancy.
Who Actually Benefits
GoEast’s online page aims a segment at professionals who deal with Chinese-speaking clients, and another at people moving to China. Those are different months. The first needs email, calls, and your product’s words, and can happen online from home at two or more private hours a week. The second needs daily life as well as the office, which is why an intensive morning plus one business hour is often saner than a pure “business” label. LTL’s Beijing page even mentions a student who needed classes around a work schedule. Flexibility is the private product’s point. It is also how a busy person buys hours and then cancels them. Read the cancellation rule. CLI consumes an online hour if you cancel inside 24 hours. Assume other schools are stricter until they say otherwise.
If you cannot yet shop and take a taxi in Mandarin, do that first. A business textbook will let you hide in English cognates and printed slides. The beginner and intermediate pages are the honest detour. Come back when a colleague’s spoken aside is the problem, not the tones on “hello.”
Language Is Not a Job Offer
Schools sometimes sit “internship” and “business” on the same menu. That’s Mandarin’s intensive FAQ describes an internship project: a team activity in Chinese, after an interview, ending in what they call an internship certificate. That is a school activity. It is not employment, it is not a work permit, and it is not DragonTrail’s placement service. The internship page on this cluster separates that kind of project from paid work. If a brochure implies you will leave with clients or a title, ask who the employer is and which visa allows the work. If the answer is the language school itself, you are looking at a classroom project.
A completion certificate from LTL or That’s Mandarin can go in a learning record. It will not satisfy a hiring manager who wanted a negotiation they can watch. A short recording of you presenting, made with the teacher’s corrections, is more honest evidence than a stamp. We will not write that you are fluent in business Chinese because you finished a month.
City and Sector
上海 is the city schools and students name when the work is international business. Beijing is the city they name for institutions, policy, and headquarters talk. Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Suzhou appear on That’s Mandarin’s intensive list and may be right for a sector that actually operates there. The language of a factory floor in Guangdong is a different brief from a joint-venture meeting in Lujiazui; the trade page covers sourcing trips, which are often too short for a student visa and too specific for a generic business book. Tell the teacher the city you will use the language in. Accent exposure follows the city. It does not follow the word “business.”
Online lessons remove the city and keep the documents. GoEast’s private hours from USD 29, with timezone windows on the group page and flexible private booking, are a practical way to rehearse a monthly call without moving house. They do not replace a stay if your problem is the hallway conversation after the meeting. Buy the format that matches the missed moment.
What You Are Paying For
Specialist teachers cost private rates. Use the published floors only as a scale: about USD 29 an hour online at GoEast before a materials fee, about 192 RMB a class on That’s Mandarin’s older price page, about USD 774 a week for LTL’s Beijing one-to-one product. A week is not an hour. Ask how many minutes sit in the unit, and whether a finance or legal text costs more than general business. Materials may be yours — the contract — or theirs, billed like GoEast’s USD 99. Do not pay a “corporate package” price until you see the same hours written as a count.
If a company is paying, the invoice should name the company, the learner, and the hours. DragonTrail is not the vendor of record for these schools. We also do not add a management fee of our own on this page, because we are not selling the course.
How to Start
Write five sentences you must be able to say at work, and attach one real document with confidential numbers removed. Ask a school for a sample week. Compare that plan with a general intermediate course. Often you want both: shared level work, plus two specialist hours. If you also need the right to be employed, stop and talk to the employer’s visa process. A language invoice will not do that job.
Request Guidance with the five sentences if you want help seeing whether you are ready for specialist hours. Find a Suitable Program if you are still choosing between a language stay and a degree. There is no business-Chinese intake on DragonTrail.
Fit the Lesson to the Work Week You Actually Have
Business vocabulary is useless if the timetable fights the job that brought you to China. That’s Mandarin’s intensive group is a morning block, 08:30 to 12:00, Monday to Friday. That can work for someone whose meetings start after lunch. It fails for someone who is in a factory before eight. The same school’s part-time line, on the prices page whose heading still says 2020, is two classes a day, two days a week, in Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen, groups up to eight, from 110 RMB a class. LTL’s city index says a private school cannot process a student visa and may issue an acceptance letter and a payment receipt for a short-term tourist visa after you pay. A business trip on a tourist or business entry is a different document from an X2. Read the visa page for your passport, and do not treat a language invoice as permission to work.
GoEast’s online private lessons start at USD 29 a class hour, with packs of 50 to 200 hours and a twelve-hour month from USD 369 plus materials. That product can run before you fly and after you go home, in the time windows the school publishes. It will not hand you a desk in a Chinese company. CLI’s one-to-one week can be pointed at a professional topic because there is no group to wait for, and the tuition figures on the FAQ include housing in Guilin, which is the wrong city if your counterparties are in Shanghai. Name the city of the meetings first, then the hours, then the vocabulary list you will bring. DragonTrail does not place you in a company and does not quote a business-Chinese rate.

FAQ
Is business Chinese an MBA?
No. An MBA is a degree from a university, with admissions and tuition of its own. Business Chinese is a language track. It can help you survive an MBA taught in Chinese. It does not award one.
Can I start business Chinese as a beginner?
You can start Mandarin as a beginner, and you can sprinkle in your job’s nouns. A course that is only business Chinese assumes daily language you do not have yet. GoEast places the business track after a long general ladder. That order is the honest one.
Will the course find me clients or a job?
No. That’s Mandarin’s internship project is a Chinese-speaking team exercise with a school certificate. It is not a hiring desk. DragonTrail does not place candidates in companies from this page.
Can my company book lessons for a team?
Schools often say yes, and That’s Mandarin’s city pages mention corporate study among their formats. The contract, the hours, and the invoice belong to that school. DragonTrail is not reselling a team package here. Ask the school for a per-person hour count.
Do I need HSK for business Chinese?
Only if an employer or a university asked for the score. Many working learners need email and meetings and never need HSK. If you need both, buy general or exam hours for the score and specialist hours for the job. They are different drills.
Is Shanghai required?
No. Shanghai is a common setting, not a rule. Study where you will use the language, or study online if the use is a call. A month in a city you will never work in is still useful life-Mandarin. It is a weak way to learn your factory’s vocabulary.
What should I redact before I send documents to a teacher?
Prices, personal data, and anything your employer would not want in a classroom. A redacted clause is enough to teach the grammar. You do not need to hand over a live customer list to learn how to chase a payment.
Does DragonTrail teach business Chinese?
No. We explain the choice and the limits. The teacher, the invoice, and the schedule are the school’s. Request Guidance if you want those limits applied to your week.
