Chinese for Heritage Speakers
Heritage speakers grew up around Chinese without necessarily being able to read, write, or use standard Mandarin in public. A useful course starts from that uneven map. It does not put you in a beginner class because you cannot write, and it does not put you in an advanced class because you can talk at dinner. This page is about that placement, including home dialects that are not 普通话.
Information checked 29 October 2026 (Asia/Shanghai).
DragonTrail has no heritage cohort and no test that sorts dialects. The school must listen to you. GoEast names heritage learners as one adult audience. That is a marketing segment, not a seat we hold.
At a Glance
| Typical split | Stronger listening than reading, or family speech without formal register. |
|---|---|
| Dialect | Cantonese, Hokkien, and other home languages are not Mandarin. Say which one you actually speak. |
| Script | Family texts may be traditional. Mainland classrooms default to simplified. Pick a priority. |
| GoEast | Their online page lists heritage and family connection as a beginner-friendly audience beside career and HSK goals. |
| Placement | Ask for separate scores for speaking, listening, reading, and writing. One level number will lie. |
| Group risk | A mixed heritage group only works if the gaps match. Otherwise use private hours for the weak skill. |
| Goal | Name it: talk to grandparents, read a menu and a lease, or pass HSK. Each goal is a different month. |
| Children | A parent’s heritage plan is not a child’s school place. See the family page. |
| DragonTrail | No heritage placement certificate. |
Uneven Skill Is the Whole Point
Heritage learners are often embarrassed twice: a beginner teacher praises them for a sentence they have known since childhood, and an advanced teacher assigns a text they cannot read. Both rooms are wrong. CLI’s FAQ notes that advanced students may focus on reading, business, or HSK while beginners start with tones, which is a reminder that a program can aim at one skill. Ask for that aim. GoEast says heritage learners want to speak with family, understand culture, and pass language to children, and it marks that audience beginner-friendly. Some heritage adults are beginners in Mandarin and experts in another Chinese language. The label “beginner-friendly” must not erase a Cantonese speaker’s sophistication or invent Mandarin they do not have.
A placement that reports four numbers is the minimum. If the school only offers “intermediate,” ask what that predicts on Monday morning. You want a class, or a private hour, that spends time on the low number. That’s Mandarin’s intensive group stresses listening and speaking. That helps a reader who is shy in speech. It bores a fluent speaker who came to learn characters. The reading-and-writing page is the companion for the second person.
Home Language and Standard Mandarin
普通话 is the language of mainland classrooms and of HSK. A grandparent’s Cantonese or Hokkien is a real language, and a Mandarin course will not automatically extend it. Teachers may not speak it. Say the name of what you speak so nobody pretends your tones are “wrong Mandarin” when they are a different system. You can still want Mandarin for work or for a cousin in 北京. Those are two projects. A month in China will immerse you in the city’s majority language, which in the schools’ mainland cities is Mandarin, with local accents. LTL even markets Chengde as close to a standard they care about. An accent goal is optional. Comprehension of ordinary local speech is the more useful one.
Taipei, on LTL’s city index, is tagged for traditional characters and is not a mainland visa case. If your literacy is traditional because of family schooling, a Taipei plan and a Beijing plan teach different scripts. Choose the script you will read next year, not the one that feels like loyalty. You can add the other script later. You cannot learn both writing systems well in a single intensive month.
Family Feeling Is Not a Syllabus
People travel to China to repair a relationship with a language they were teased about, or that their parents did not pass on. That motive is serious. It is a bad syllabus. A teacher who only affirms you will not teach you the characters. A teacher who treats you as empty will insult you. The professional version is respectful placement plus ordinary homework. GoEast’s segment language is warm and still sells a structured course, with a trial. Take the trial. A week of emotion without a textbook chapter is a holiday. Holidays are allowed. They are a different page.
If the goal is to speak with a specific relative, bring the topics you actually avoid: health, money, a child’s school, a funeral. Private lessons can rehearse those. A group cannot, and should not hear your family business. Price a few private hours even if you also join a group for the shared grammar.
HSK Can Help or Humiliate
A heritage speaker who talks well and reads poorly will fail a written HSK that a quieter classroom learner passes. CLI says the exam is largely written and listening. Believe that before you use the score as a self-worth test. If a university asks for it, prepare the weak paper with the HSK pages on this cluster. If nobody asked, you do not need the exam to deserve the language. That’s Mandarin’s level certificates and LTL’s completion certificates are school documents. They are not a community’s recognition. Do not expect either paper to settle a family argument.
GoEast’s ladder, with hundreds of words per stage, is a way to see reading volume. A heritage speaker might skip early speaking levels and still need those word counts on the page. Ask the school whether they will let you skip. A rigid ladder that makes you repeat “hello” is a reason to choose a different school, not a reason to endure it.
Living with the Language You Already Half Know
A homestay can be powerful or too close. LTL says most Beijing students choose one, and That’s Mandarin aims homestays at four weeks or more with some meals. A heritage learner may understand the host’s kindness and miss the idiom, or may be held to a higher standard than a visibly foreign beginner. Tell the host, through the school, that you want correction. Otherwise people will switch to the easy register, or to English, and you will repeat the family pattern of being almost understood.
Cities where English arrives quickly, which schools themselves say about Shanghai, can undo the month. A smaller city on LTL’s list, or CLI’s Guilin, raises the number of Mandarin hours after class. It also raises the chance you hear a dialect in the market. That is useful if someone explains it, and confusing if you thought every voice would sound like a textbook. Ask the school what you will hear outside the door.
How to Ask for Placement
In the first message, state the home language, the script you read if any, and one thing you can do and one you cannot. Ask for a four-skill check. Refuse a single level if they cannot explain Monday’s lesson. Add private hours for the weak skill. Leave HSK off the plan unless a form demands it.
DragonTrail will not grade your family story. Request Guidance with that four-line description if you want help choosing a city and a format. The course starts when a teacher has heard you, not when a form calls you a heritage learner.
Place the Ear and the Page Separately
Heritage speakers often understand family talk and stall when the page is simplified characters or when the register turns formal. A beginner group will bore you. An advanced group may assume you can write what you can say. GoEast’s online page names heritage learners as a segment and maps ten levels onto HSK 3.0 and CEFR: levels 1–3 as Band 1, 4–6 as Band 2, 7–10 as Bands 3–4, with 630, 721, and 1,140 words on those stages. After level 10 the same page points people to private lessons. That map is a placement conversation, not a verdict on your family language. Ask for a test that scores listening, speaking, reading, and writing apart. If the school only offers one level number, you will be misplaced on the skill you use least.
Characters are the usual surprise. Mainland classrooms default to simplified characters unless the school says otherwise. LTL’s city index includes Taipei, where traditional characters are the local norm, and Singapore. A heritage speaker whose parents used traditional books can lose a week if the textbook flips the script without warning. CLI starts beginners from 零基础 and still runs a placement for everyone else. Bring a page you can already read and a page you cannot. The gap between them is the course. DragonTrail does not score heritage fluency and does not run a family-language class.

FAQ
I understand my parents but freeze in class. Where do I belong?
In a placement that separates listening from speaking and reading. You may need a speaking-heavy hour and a basic character hour, not one intermediate label. Say that in the trial. GoEast and the other schools cited here can customize private time even when groups are rigid.
Is Cantonese covered by a Mandarin course?
No. Mandarin courses teach 普通话. Your Cantonese remains an asset and a different language. A teacher may not share it. Do not expect the month to be a Cantonese immersion unless a school explicitly sells that, and the schools in this cluster’s sources are selling Mandarin.
Should I learn simplified or traditional characters?
Learn the script you will read. Mainland schools use simplified. LTL tags Taipei for traditional. A heritage learner with traditional literacy can keep reading traditional and learn to recognize simplified, but a first intensive month should pick one production script.
Will a beginner class waste my time?
It will if they ignore what you already hear. It will not if your Mandarin itself is near zero and the “heritage” is another dialect or a few household phrases. Be precise in the trial so they do not flatter you into the wrong book.
Can my child join my class?
Usually no. Adults and children need different rooms, different hours, and often different visas and guardians. Read the family page. A parent’s heritage goal does not enroll a child.
Do I need to live in China?
No. GoEast sells online classes for this audience, including people who are not moving. A stay helps if your gap is everyday speech and you will actually speak outside class. It is optional if your gap is reading and you have a teacher online.
Will HSK validate my heritage?
It will validate a test performance. CLI notes the exam’s limits. Take it if a university or an employer asked. Do not take it to prove you belong to a family.
Does DragonTrail run heritage assessments?
No. We do not score dialects or family background. A school’s trial is the assessment. We can help you ask for a four-skill result instead of one flattering level.
